Boards A/R/T 8 week loss challenge thread

We discussed a weight loss thread and so here it is. We'll go for 8 weeks which will bring us up to the June bank holiday weekend. The final weigh in will be on Sunday June 5 as some are using this as a base towards CCM !

Now unlike those on the fitness forum we will have guideline and not rules as those training for larger races have different needs and a naughty reward can help focus us towards finishing that extra mile etc in training or a race.

Also there is no point doing anything today that you can't see yourself doing in 6 months or a year. We are all trying to create a new us and some lifestyle changes will get us there quicker than a list of RULES !

So we'll weigh in each tuesday and try to do it at the same time each week. As in morning or evening.

We'll ask you to post at the start with a short bio, fitness goal and starting weight in total pounds.

Then a weekly update with starting weight and current and how your week went training wise etc. We'll then do a table each week showing how all are doing ( not a leaderboard as this isn't the biggest loser )

Also you must measure each week as muscle weighs more than fat and if you lose fat and replace it with muscle you can gain on the sacle but lose inches off your body. We'll just do 2 inches updates in the middle and at the end.

Below you'll find some help on measuring, how to prepare and on diet ( these are thanks to g'ems )

    How to Prepare
    Measurement Guidelines
    Diet I
    Diet II
    Diet III

You may want to reference the Fitness:The Basics (Incl Diet and Nutrition) thread aswell as it's another great thread put together by the fitness forum guys. Transform has some good videos on that thread too which might have people more inclined to follow the no junk food guideline.

    Here are the guidelines

    1. eat healthy - take the healthy option when possible
    2. keep well hydrated
    3. keep a food diary and read labels on food to see what in your food.
    2. exercise and prepare properly for your race
    3. Limited booze, junk food and caffine
    4. don't starve yourself the day of/before a weigh in
    5. Measure your body as you can stay the same on the scales but can loose inches
    6. Weigh yourself at the same day and time each week were possible as your weight can change a lot during the day.
    7. Your only in competition with yourself so jut because someone loses 2 pounds more than you don't get down over it.
    8. Never mind "no pain no gain".......i rather "no effort to gain"
    9. Share youe experiences, good and bad. They can help others and we can help you.

So let the fun begin !

You can join in anytime over the peroid and remember your doing this for yourself in the long run ( excuse the pun )

I might as well get things under way.

I work 2 jobs and have 15 hrs commuting so life is busy and i LOVE food so diet isn't great and hasn't been for many years.

I'm married with a 19 month old and no 2 due tomorrow !

Stated running in Sept 2009 at a weight of 256 pounds and am 5'9". I did a few short races and wanted to do last yrs Cork marathon but through chest infections and injury that fell away and i ended up doing my 1st half marathon in Clonntarf. I did a few more small races after that in 2010.

Then late last year i decided to focus this year on doing triathlons as there is less punishment on my joints via the swimming and cycling. I only started swimming in Feb and finished my 1st triathlon on Saturday.

I have another tri in 3 weeks and am working towards some more half marathons this year as well.

I know if i can drop my weight i can increase my speed in races and feel better about myself as well.

My weight today is 237 pounds and my fitness goals are to do a sub 2 hr half marathon and do an olympic triathlon in August.

    I'll go next so.
I'm 5ft9 and 180lbs, I'd like to get about 20lbs off overall. In the next 8 weeks I'd be happy with 5 to 10. Going to run/walk the Cork marathon in the hope of recapturing my mojo which has been missing the last couple of years (starting to feel sth of late :D ). My last PB was set in March 09 and that has to be sorted out. I'm going to cut takeaways out altogether and if I hit my target training for the week I'm going to treat myself to a chocolate bar and a cherry lucozade.
I'm a stay at home dad to 3 girls and my wife has the summers off so I should get alot more time to train. The baby has been sick on and off since November (nothing too serious) which has led to alot of sleepless nights and a lack of motivation but hopefully the new deal my wife and I made regarding training will sort things out.

    My turn I guess......

5ft2, 132lbs. Looking to get down to around 119lbs.

Just started back doing a bit of running after well over 18 months of doing nothing. I'm also about to move from Limerick to Galway and starting an office job which will involve shifts that will start at 8am at earliest and finish at 10pm latest. Only good thing is that I will be living in the Ballybrit area which looks like it'll be easy to get a few routes sorted.

    Bring on the challenge!!!! :D

Thanks for starting this - great timing for me personally
    :D
I`m 4ft11 and 109lbs looking to lose 1 lb a week til june as even though I was lighter earlier in the year I had absolutely no muscle, except maybe my legs.
1 lb is roughly 3500 calories so I`ll restrict my calories each day by 250 and do 250 calories worth of exercise.
I`ll spend this week sorting out the food and exercise plans and have to recover from running the weekend.
I may or may not do Cork but at the minute I`m not too pushed, might run with a 4/4:30hr friend.
I wannna look like this one in 8 weeks :Dhttp://www.bodyrock.tv/

I'm 5ft 10" and 243 lbs having weighed myself this weekend actually just out of co-incidence. I've been heavier and I think my max weight has been around 253 lbs a few years ago. I got down to about 230 lbs about 6 months ago but through laziness and eating too much, I've let it creep back on.

Ideally I want to be 168 lbs max which is 12 stone. Although I really think I could possibly go as low as 154 lbs/11 stone and still be a healthy weight for my height.

I started running just under a year ago and it was going well until November/December when the snow hit and I got lazy and seemed to go about 6 weeks without doing any consistent training.

My weight is severely holding me back when it comes to running. I'm incredibly slow and I don't mean slow as in 50 minutes for a 10k. I'm talking 93 minutes for a 10k! So yeah, definite huge room for improvement.

    I'm in too.

5'6", 152lbs - have put on about half a stone while I've been injured due to a mixture of comfort eating and an appetite that still based itself around running 40mpw! Need to get a hold of my diet again as I'm hoping to get some shorter-distance PBs once I'm fully recovered from this injury and back training properly. Would like to lose the half-stone over the next 8 weeks, but eventually would like to get down to about 130-135lbs (I don't have a particularly small frame, so around 9 and a half stone would be light for me). I work a sedentary job, which doesn't help matters.

I've been running for just under 3 years, and ran my third marathon 5 weeks ago - broke 4 hours for the first time, mangling my left IT band in the process. Goals for the rest of this year involve setting PBs at 5k, 5 miles and 10k for definite and possibly 10 mile and HM too - basically get faster and get stronger! Haven't picked any target races because a lot depends on how quickly I can completely get over this injury, though I'm thinking Dunshaughlin for a crack at a 10k in late June.

I'm 5'2, about 170 lbs and looking to get down to between 115-125. I started running last october for many reasons, but after a small knee injury in january I never got back into the swing of things. I'm hoping this will give me the push I need to train consistently again and start dropping the extra lard.

I'm 6'3 and 228 pounds, last year i took up squash and did a good bit of spin classes and got myself down to 220 from 252 but the squash club closed back in Novemeber and lost interest in Spin so went back to 235 i reckon. So working at getting down to 210 as my goal but once i hit the 15 stone bracket again it will give me a huge lift.

Have decided to try a few Triathlon Sptints this year as something to motivate me and am currently enjoying training for them, would love to be able do a half marathon too and will aim for that in September.

Im 30 and am married and the wife has recently taken up running as well so we can help each other, she did the 10 k phoenix race yesterday.

    I'm in.

    37 yo, 6ft 4in - 266 lbs.

I'm hoping to do 4 triathlons this year starting with my first in mid May (5 weeks away!) 2 more to be decided and also the Olympic distance at the Dublin Tri in August. I have been training for the last 6-7 weeks. I am reasonably fit but too easily fall off the healthy eating wagon.

I'd like to lose 14 -18lbs in the 8 weeks, which I think should be achievable given my current exercise programme. Overall I'd like to be down around the 200lbs mark.

    ill have a go!

male, im 5'9, 72kg's as of tuesday morning.

have been out injured from running since early january (over 3months now) and didnt get a chance to get rid of the excess over Christmas, and on top of that i had depression biscuit binge when i first got injured, lol....

hopefully i can keep off the sugar until i get back running at least, and onwards from there, dont expect to loose much weight(if any) as i cant really exercise much, but ill give it a go.

    good luck!

    I'm in too.

29yr old male at 13 stone 7lbs. My training has been horribly inconsistent over the last two years mostly due to injury but I've managed to shed 7lbs since xmas. Back in my "fit days" I about 12 stone 10lbs. I want to get back there:eek:

Exams will hamper my progress over the next three weeks but I plan to train away and really put the foot down once they're finished (studying=copious amounts of tea and biscuits:mad:)

    Good luck everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

    I'm in...so profile:

29 yo female - about 5"7 and weigh approx 64kg (give or take 100g or so) - plan on doing the offical weighting and measurements last thing on Monday nights so can post on a Tuesday. Currently working a mix of 3 jobs so if I lost my diary I'd be screwed! Cycle to and from work and on some days from one job to another so relatively active. Have been running on and off for about 2 years maybe 3 - I go through phases but starting to get more into it lately and am finding three things. First, my diet is holding me back and I can really feel the difference when I've fuelled and hydrated properly and when I haven't, second my core is weak, like friggin jelly so aside from running it is clearly time to take back up pilates or similar and three I just can't drink and function like I used to!

Goals: My ultimate goal for this year is to get a half marathon under the belt - am looking towards Dublin in September with waterford after that (can't remember if that one is Dec or Jan). Ran a 5 mile and a 5k already this year and have another 10k and 7k coming up in next month.

Would also like to get my times down.

My weight - would be happier if it were below 60kg (even 59.9 would do) but really I think the issue is less about my weight and more about rebalancing my fat to muscle ratio.

Essentially I should be able to meet those goals if I clean up my diet and get a wee bit more dedicated about sticking to my training plan.

I'm in - love the timing as its exactly one year today that I decided to cop on and lose weigh / get fit! So I am 26 year old male, 5 foot 8, was 19st ish  this day last - down somewhere around 13 or 14 ish stone at this stage (although haven't weighed myself in a while so not certain)

Eat pretty well these days and run a fair bit but find I can slip easily when busy in work, study etc. Been too lazy to prepare meals in advance is what I need to work on most so gonna get back to doing this everyday! Started my own "get back 100%" 2 weeks ago and gonna use this thread and all of ye as motivation to go zero sweets and bread for the 8 weeks at least.

Am going away for easter weekend so gonna allow myslef a boozy one then on condition I do the Great Limerick Run half marathon the weekend after as punishment!

Aim for the 8 weeks is lose the love handles once and for all!

Busy with exams this week so will do the measurement thingy starting at the weekend!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

    In, love the timing

Back when I was fit I always weighed around 10.5 to 11 stone

    Currently 222lbs, 5ft 10

Know what to do and used to do quite a bit of running, lots of 10k's and then half marathons and 50km cycles at weekends.

Not done a tap in over a year and lots of bad habits

Just need a kick in the ass and am in this for good!

Hi, I'm a 31 year old male. Ran DCM in 2009 but have not trained consistently since. Last race I ran was the Dublin Half Marathon last year. Really want to get back into consistent training and clean up the diet to improve the performance levels.

I'm 6 foot 1 and I'm presently 187 pounds, I would like to get to an ideal racing weight of 168 pounds (21 pounds to lose), and get 4 - 5 sessions in per week consistently. I trained well since the 8th March but last week I got a cold, started drinking on Monday and kept it going for the week. Have a tendancy to fall spectacularly off the wagon like that. Its not good for my state of mind. Seriously considering knocking the sauce on the head completely now and limiting takeaways to one a week.

I would love to run the Wexford Half Marathon on the 22nd May and do fairly well. Also, hope to be part of a boards relay team for the Cork City Marathon on the 6th June. Best of luck to everyone.

I am in too. 32 year old. 215lbs. (15st 5lbs). I would be happy to get to 14stone 10lbs. I am running a bit and doing some cycling. I hope to up this and avoide the Easter eggs. :-) Will post back next week,

    Can I join too?

Im 31yo female, 5ft 3 and 145lbs. I would like to be 130lbs. I have lost and put back on the same 15lbs over and over again for the last 5 or 6 years. I can never maintain weightloss- once I get to a weight Im happy with I fall off the wagon big time and pile it all back on again.

Im hoping this time will be different. I find it difficult to train consistently as I have a long comute to work and have a husband and child to try fit into my hectic schedule too:). I ran the Dublin Marathon in 2009 but have suffered with injuries a lot since then. I have ran 4 races so far this year and and aiming to run one a month for 2011. Im also running 3 legs of the Cork relay in June so dropping a bit of weight first would be great.

One big problem is im off to Vegas next week and intend to eat everything I want and over indulge in any way I can (its retribution for not making it over for my wedding last year). So I suppose I'll try my best this week then have a week off and then back on track for the month of May. Is this ok?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,832 ✭✭✭littlebug

Oh go on then I'm in too:). I'm, 5 ft 2 and 143lbs as of this morning, having eaten my way through the winter. I'm just back running properly again for the past few weeks. I won't ever be skinny but I'd be happy to get to (and stay at ) 133 lbs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭hollypink

Ok I'm in too - I'm 5 ft 3 and would like to get to 133 lbs. I'm at 151 lbs right now so need to do something about it. My weakness is chocolate and sweet stuff generally so Easter will be a challenge! Oh also alcohol. I've gotten into bad habits food-wise in the last year so hopefully can get back to good habits again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

I should probably point out that a few years ago, I went from 18 stone down to 14.5 stone in about 6 months through eating well and exercising quite a lot in the gym.

I got a bit slack after that and it all slowly creeped back on. I'm currently using running as my only form of exercise. I'm not currently in a gym and I've no intentions to re-join one either. I also hate doing weights :)

Just a bit of a profile: 23 years old, 5'11 and approx 170 pounds. This was measured using an old weighing scales but I'm going to buy a newer digital one during the week.

Goal is after the 8 weeks is 160 pounds or a loss of 10 pounds from whatever my actual weight is now.

I'm planning on going cold turkey with regards all junkfood except for probably easter where I will have a bit of chocolate. My diet isn't great in general, in terms of its not very varied and I dont get a lot of vegetables in my diet but I'm going to actively try to change this. I've a massive sweet tooth, particularly for all types of jellies so it'll be hard going cold turkey but I will do it.

Regarding exercise, well I its a very long story but I've suffered with alot of injuries over the past couple of years and haven't been able to do nearly as much exercise as I would like. My main aim is to get back to the level I was at before injuries but that will take a while. I'm in the last part of my rehab from my various injuries and after being with the physio last night its going to be approx another 2 weeks until I start back running due to some inflamed tendons arund my foot. So until then my exercise will be limited to stretching and some core work but I'm still hopefully the change in diet will help drop a few pounds during this time anyway.

    Thanks for that Woddle !

Oh just an exerice log for this week for myself. I am training for triathlons and half marathons as well so different types of training.

    Monday 9 KM run
    Tuesday spinning
    Wednesday Coached swimming
    Thursday 1000M swimming
    Friday 9KM run
    Saturday 20KM cycle
    Sunday 15KM run

Ok seems like a lot but i'm still kind of in pre season and working extra hard for the next 2 weeks and will taper down for a week because i have a sprint triathlon in Nenagh on April 30th.

Also to add my wife is due today so some of that might have to change:D

I had plantar fasciitis last year and used the eliptical machine almost exclusively till it was healed. It was only running that really effected it.

Unfortunately I'm not really able to swim, learning is on my to do list but in all honestly I've been very lazy about doing it. But yeah I probably can cycle. I did a small bit last week and it wasn't too bad. I didn't ask the physio about cycling but it doesn't seem to aggravate the tendons so it will probably be ok. My road bike is at the family home at the moment but I can use the gym until then and pick up my bike at the weekend. Thanks for the idea.

Its my achillies and anterior tibialis tendon's that are inflamed and the eliptical machine seems to aggrivate them at the moment so I'll probably keep off it for the moment even though if I have to use machines its the one I find most enjoyable.

I'm in if it is not too late. In Brief, male 5ft 11" and 204lbs this morning. Started running a couple of years back when I couldn't run 100m and on to the DCM last year. My big problem is with diet, I'm veggie which you would think would be good but if you want to eat sh*t veggie food filled with calories then it is remarkably easy. All but gave up on booze over the last while but have compensated by keeping mr.tayto in those flashy red jackets he is so used to. Running cork this year with a time target(Dublin ambition was just to enjoy and finish) so hopefully Training should be fairly consistent. This thread should be a great help. I find the 1000MC one a great motivator too so hopefully will get the same out of this. Good luck everyone!

Room for another? I'm hoping for inspiration to last longer than my usual 2/3 weeks of motivation.

At the couch end of C5K, ran a bit when I was 7, now 37. Moderately normally active chasing after 3 young boys, but no proper exercise for a loooooooong time. Didn't die on first 2 runs, moderately pleased with that.

    F, 5'4, now 138 lbs.
Goals to be - (unrealistic - 122:rolleyes:) 129, To stick to it, To run 5K this summer, To not be embarrassed on hols:cool:.

If it's not too late, can I join! Couldn't get access to a pc yesterday. I'm 5 foot 7 and currently 136 pounds. Would love to lose approx 10-12 pounds, to get back to just below 9 stone. Was pretty active training for the marathon last year, but had shoulder surgery in November and have only started back running in the last month, so the time off has taken its toll.
Would really appreciate if someone could add me to the table, not sure how to do it:o

    Welcome,

Don't focus on the scales. Focus on eating healthy and your training...........the weight loss will follow as you'll be taking in less calories and doing more to burn off what you are taking in.

Thanks, it sounds so simple ..... and I'm really looking forward to it (...really). Hopefully the 8 weeks will make a big difference. There is always something on, or some reason not to do it now, but it would be fantastic to be fitter coming into the summer. Great timing.

Hope everything goes well with No 2 over the next few days!

I'm the same. Always seem to have some excuse to break the new healthy living plan, normally a nights drinking followed by kebab, followed by greasy fry up, followed by "ah sure, I may as well start again next week" :)

I've been making a few sacrifices this last month as I reckon any true friends will understand why I'm not going out or why I'm only staying a short while and drinking water. It's not easy though!

I feel your pain, crisps are my weakness after a drink at home...........or an evil cheese sambo:D

I work 2 jobs so Sunday is normally my whole weekend and i normally have a drink on a sunday evening and end up with a few cans or some wine.

BUT now that we have a baby due i haven't drank in almost a month and feeling better for it.

    Hi,

Can you please count me in.

    38 yo, 6ft 3in - 242 lbs.

I've just started running a few weeks ago to try and get in shape and lose a few pounds. I'm hoping to do the race series in the Park this year with maybe a few shorter races thrown in for good measure.

I usually throw myself into these things but the issue is sustaining it.

I'd like to lose 16lbs in the 8 weeks, which I think should be achievable given my current exercise programme. Overall I'd like to be down around the 200lbs mark. The dream ;)

Count me in please. M, 5'9", 165lbs. Not too bad but started at this weight last July when going for the DCM. 16 weeks later was down to 150lbs at the time of the marathon but was injured shortly afterwards. Idleness and Christmas put it all back on again.

Problem at present is that I am back training for past 10 weeks and have lost - zero. Too many calories going in the top I suppose.

Signed up for Cork so hope to hit the start line at 154lbs.

    Good luck everyone.

Just added in the starting waist size - I measured in cm because i really don't get inches and thanks for whoever converted my kilos to lbs - my scales only had kilos and I find lbs hard to visualise anyway, whereas I know a kilo is a bag of sugar :D

Got off to reasonably good start today - was a scheduled rest day in training and at the shared office lunch (the two ngos on our floor get together once a month, everyone brings something and we have a very big lunch) I stuck mostly to the savoury stuff, avoided the donuts, only had 3 choc heros and mostly filled up on salad*. Also skipped the coffee and biscuits at talk thingy I was at this evening so very pleased with myself.

*please note the salad wasn't just leaves - I'm not going overboard! There was bits of blue cheese, nuts and dried cranberries hidden amonst the spinach and rocket leaves...yum!

    May I join please?

After years of virtually no exercise and terrible eating habits I started the c25k in January. I can jog 4 miles at the moment. Train 4-5 times a week mostly 3-4 miles each. Training wise I'm doing a leg of the cork city marathon relay and I hope to go on to a 10k. I've done 1 5k race to date.

Starting weight in January was 186lbs currently weigh 166lbs my goal would be 154lbs. I'm female 24! Looking forward to this will post waist measurements tomorrow!
