I'm looking out at the sun today thinking what a nice few pints would taste like after a few holes of golf.
I'm badly in need of a good session.

At least Good Friday wont be too far away when us Irish get to give 2 fingers to those who would repress us.
Big BBQ & BYOB lined up, it's been great the last few years.

Next we need a day where the church/state try to prohibit blowjobs.

Could you not just do that tomorrow? Why wait for Good Friday?

    John 3:17

And yay Jesus came down from mount Sinai after his chat with the almighty Easter bunny and there was Easter eggs for all. And to uphold this tradition lets ban all fun stuff on this day every year.

    Religions great.

'all fun stuff...' Slightly exagerating there aren't you? Can't understand why everyone makes such a big deal about Good Friday every year.

Its the principal of the thing. Religion controlling people etc.

I dont drink myself, It doesnt affect me one bit, its just the principal of the thing. The bloody church telling us what we can and cant have on a certain day. I've had enough of that shít in my life growing up and honestly they can just go and fúck themselves.

We need Ruairi Quinn to be Minister for the Separation of Church & State.
    He's hit the ground running.

I rarely drink, but I get this insatiable thirst to imbibe on some random Spring Friday, every year.

So bad is it, I'm driven to distraction in the preceding weeks and plead and plead, calling out for help.

You'd think I'd have learned from last year, but I never do...

Father Brendan Smith didn't get to drink on good Friday and look what happened to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,758 ✭✭✭✭TeddyTedson

I drink most weekends, not all weekend, generally just a Saturday night.
But I really hate the idea of drinking during the day. I remember being a young impressionable lad drinking for the day and always hated it.
I always get really uneasy after a few hours and just want to be sober even though I wouldn't be completely drunk or anything.
The thought of it is already making me shudder:(:(

Contrary to logic I reckon the Licensed Vintners Association are loving the Good Friday ban as by having just 1 or 2 days per year where you're not allowed to buy drink it gives their product a perceived extra value for the other 363 days.

I guarantee that if you if you could go buy a drink in Ireland 365 days a year 24 hours a day a lot of the mystique about acquiring it would soon disappear (which of course is the last thing the LVA want in this losing battle they're fighting).

"Its only one day, for the sake of holy god can ye not just drink and be good catholics? no hand me that rasher on a regular friday, I'm going home to have sex with the girlfriend, but I have to buy condoms on the way, dont want her getting pregnant!"

ahhh, love being a modern catholic..

To be fair, it is not the "Church" telling you what to do/not do. The Church is telling it's followers/flock/disciples etc... what they need to do in order to be members of their faith.

It's the state/government that is telling the non-religious/non-catholic what to do. Blame the state/protest against the state, not the Church.

But if you do drink on GF... you are going to Hell... muhahahaha :pac:

Yep, I'd bet the sales of alcohol go up massively every Maundy Thursday due to the number of people 'making a point'

You should see the ques up my way on the Thursday before, you'd swear that prohibition was coming in the next day! I myself, am way too smart for that shenanigans - I get mine on the Wednesday

I personally don't care what you drink or don't drink on Good Friday and I don't think the law matters very much on the issue.

If you think about it, it is rare for people to have a problem with Jesus rather than the institutions that humans have set up in His name.

I agree, it's difficult to see fault in alot of the teachings of Jesus, it's the whole idea behind the Jesus story that I find a bit silly:

God sent Himself down to us to have Himself sacrificed to Himself to appease Himself for the flaw that He Himself made in us:p

And back on topic, didn't Jesus have a drink of wine vinegar off the sponge on good Friday?

Think about it logically. If you want to communicate to human beings, how best can one do this in a way that humans understand? Coming as a human being makes sense.

A lot of the crucifixion is also down to a recognition of God's grace and a realisation that we can't live perfect lives. God spares us from the judgement we deserve from Him precisely because He loves us. He does this in human terms because this is the best way we can understand.
    Comer1 wrote: »

He declined it but it is wholly irrelevant to this argument. It as far as I can see it wouldn't be a sin Biblically. If it is not this, it must be the case that it is from human testimony and authority.

Although I used to agree with the Good Friday rule, I really don't care as long as people are willing to show grace to eachother and recognise that Good Friday is a significant day on the calendar for Christians.

On the idea of 24 hour off-licenses, I definitely don't agree with that for obvious reasons.

I don't want to take this thread off topic, but when I think about it logically, none of it makes sense:D But hey, if it makes you happy.

I was making a joke about the wine vinegar (should have put a smiley after it:o) I'm aware that it was a man who misheard Him and thought He was thirsty.

Anyway, back on topic, my brother (an atheist) had a tradition of getting blotto on good Friday while watching Ben Hur...good days:)

Meh, it's not really all about happiness. I really don't see how it is as absurd as it describes. Perhaps that is part of the reason why I am not an atheist, which doesn't make much sense to me :pac:

Are we really such an alcoholic country that we can't go one day without buying drink?!

It's not even the Church anymore, it's the State. Like a bank holiday for off licenses - you can't buy it, no law saying you can't drink it. Who are you even "making a stand against" by drinking in your own back garden? Get over it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,432 ✭✭✭df1985

People all go mad to make a point on good friday by getting drunk-uproar that we cant buy a drink.

Yet the IMF come in/bankers rape the country/government constanty take the piss and people wont even get off their arse to protest.

    priorities??

I have gone 7 days without buying a drink and I will probably go another 6 days doing the same.

I do however find the restrictions put into place on Good Friday and Christmas Day absolutely moronic.
