The Subway Challenge

    Here's the challenge:

Go into a Subway sandwich shop and try and go through the whole process of ordering without having the person serve you ask you any questions apart from their initial "Can I help you?".

    It's a lot harder then you'd imagine.

Not just Subway, every God damn Deli counter also .. just STFU and listen to my order and you won't have to ask me twenty damn questions while you're preparing my order!

Me: Can I have 20 John player please?
Staff: Sure you can, did you get any fuel?
    Me: No.
Staff: Here you go, do you need a lighter or matches?
    Me: cheers, no thanks.
Staff: Ok, would you like to do the lotto?
    Me: No thanks.
Staff: Would you like to donate 20c to.....
    Me: What's that behind you?
    Staff: Where?

When they ask butter or mayo ? Try asking for marmalade.
    Watch them go into meltdown.

Being fair, most Deli counter assistants are terrible all right. A thousand questions and then they only put a pea sized ammount of fillings on and all you can taste is bread or a single thin slice of ham with lots and lots of coleslaw so all you can taste is coleslaw, etc.

Dont know how they got so popular I was in one in Cork once upon a time & after one bite threw the remainder of the sub in the bin. Tasteless, almost gone off fillings and the bread roll was lousy. Am I alone in this?

I love Subway! In fact now I'm getting tempted to get one at lunch time!

Subway ain't too bad for that, but Dunnes on George's St are just ridiculous, it doesn't matter how accurately you order your sambo they still go through the whole series of questions: roll/bap, white/brown, butter/mayo, what do you want on it, toasted, cut in half?

I agree, I wouldn't be a fan of Subway at all it all tastes and smells the same!!

Although I do like the fact that they have jalapenos as a filling, every Deli should have these as a choice they are tasty little feckers

I just ask the stupid bastards for a 12' cold-cut combo with everything on it and a cola to take away. They're afraid to ask any more questions after that for fear of getting a "which part of everything didn't you understand, you freakin' womble?"

You talking about Dunnes on South Great Georges St? If so that place is soul destroying... How stupid is "Can I have bacon, lettuce and tomato with mayo on white bread, please?" that they don't understand it...

in fairness , its probably the shop's policy to ask the extra questions and the guy serving you wants to hold on to his job

Seriously cannot understand the popularity of Subway. I know, I know, different strokes, but anything I've ever got there has been so tasteless. Tends to just taste of whatever condiment you chose.

Guys its a technique called upselling. Annoying as it may be. Folks are just trying to do their job. When you have pleasant customers like some of the folk on this thread 0_o talkng to you all day every day you can understand how repetative it can be.

    Give it a rest.

Maybe the Subways near you are just shite? Seriously though, some of the ones in Cork can be dodgy, but there are two or three which are nearly always fresh! I love the different meats in the Italian BMTs, I love the different bread rolls, the condiments and the jalapenos!!

Go marry it if I love it so much?

..I'd shag Subway if I could.

I've been Subways all over the place, I usually just go in for convenience if I just need something to fill me and it's the only option. It's not the freshness that is in question, I just find the meats to be of pretty inferior quality.

Got a meatball marinara the other day with onions, lettuce, spicy cheese, jalapenos and chipotle sauce. I wasn't a huge fan before, but it was amazing. Absolutely blew my hangover away.

There is nothing wrong with my palate, I just have different tastes to you.

The fact you can take something like their bread fresh from the oven and call it rotten suggests to me you have some ulterior motive for such blanket statements.

You do realise theyve alot more on their mind than your one order. Better to take it step by step and get it right. Id sooner be asked than have a mistake made. Odd moron puts cheese/butter on mine without asking. Unforgiveable

The bread is fine, admittedly. The meat is not. Tasteless. (apart from excessive salt)

I've never eaten a Subway sandwich. I find the idea of eating mechanically seperated, re-formed meats absolutely disgusting.

Keep it that way. I tried it once out of curiosity and all the subsequent times have just been when nothing else was available. (eg. the only place still open in an airport)

It really is underwhelming and tasteless, apart from tasting of your chosen condiment.

Different strokes etc. It's a convenient take away and a much nicer option than popping into MacDonalds for a Big Mac. You may not like it but it's certainly not rotten.

It's a cheap take away option though, you're hardly expecting imported Italian sausage meats - well I'm not and as I said, it's much nicer than the other take away options in the city. Even just from looking at other sandwich bars it's much nicer, in my opinion anyway.

Love the way people always bring up Maccie D's for comparison. Everyone knows McD's is shít. There are plenty of places to go to other than McD's and Subway.

Disagree there, it's very easy to find nicer for the same price or maybe slightly more. I'd happily pay slightly more for something nice.

There used to be a really nice deli in ennis that did proper sandwiches with proper chicken and proper butter and proper bread.
Then subway bought the building (cause the owner died or something) and now there's just crap.

    I miss Jim Nevins deli.
    it was so good.
