Col du Tourmalet on 11th June 2013. We rode up the eastern side, it's still closed on the west.

On the road to Lac d'Estaing, about 5km from our house. Paw prints of a bear, which had crossed the road not long before.

Sunny winter day, perfect for MTB near Waenhuiskrans. (Direct translate to: "Wagon-house-cave") Aloes in full flower & green grain fields.

Decided to have a look at this graveyard near Kentstown when I passed it today.

    8fny3R.jpg
The path up was very secluded.

    6arcSv.jpg
It appeared to be very well maintained. Some graves dating back to the 1800s.

    Bees! This bush was buzzing.

Unfortunately my phone died while I was there. Somewhat apt, but no more pictures :(

Sunrise at the viewing point, about 5:45am this morning,

Camera angle making the military road look way steeper than it really is, have to work on taking photos while cycling!

Which way would that be sorry if it's a silly question. I've not spent much time cycling up there.. hills

It's the road (R759) via Manor Kilbride, heading east.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭Mercian Pro

Thanks Coastwatch. Coming from Dublin either up the Embankment from Tallaght or out through Bohernabreena, take a left just after Brittas. Before you get to Manor Kilbride, turn left up the R759 signposted Sally Gap. It's pretty gentle most of the way until you get to the last few 100 metres before the Gap. Enjoy!

Those last few 100 meters are a bit of a grunt though. For my money, Laragh is the easiest ascent, and Lugala the toughest albeit with some fantastic views.

Lugala being the double ramp up the side of Ballinastoe coming west to the Gap from Roundwood lakes?..

Yup, you keep thinking you're getting there, and it gives you that little bit more.

Thanks lads might make that this weekends spin Blessington to Bray. What's the best route down (Via calary?) sorry for going a bit off topic I'll post pics (Possibly from the back of an ambulance :)) if I survive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭Mercian Pro

Best bet after coming down by Luggala is to go left at the first crossroads. This brings you up the back of the Old Long Hill and down to a tricky junction with the Enniskerry/Rocky Valley road. Right for Kilmacanoge, left for Enniskerry.

For a slightly longer spin, the Wicklow Peaks Challenge is on this Sunday 30th June. It starts in Naas and both the 100km & 120km routes follow that route to Sally Gap, Roundwood, Laragh and then a choice of hills back to nass. I did it last year, great day out and a great cause too.
