Limb at Dollymount identified as rapist's arm

    Updated: 09:47, Wednesday, 30 March 2011

Gardaí have identified the arm of a man found on Dollymount Beach as that of James Nolan, a 46-year-old convicted rapist and burglar who was released from prison last November.

Gardaí - Tests confirmed DNA match

Gardaí have identified the arm of a man found on Dollymount Beach as that of James Nolan, a 46-year-old convicted rapist and burglar who was released from prison last November.

Mr Nolan has not been reported missing but has not been seen since his release.

Gardaí are trying to establish his whereabouts but fear he could have been killed.

The investigation began following the discovery of a man's arm on Dollymount Beach in Dublin on 8 February last.

A DNA sample was taken, sent to Interpol and British police identified it as that of Nolan.

His DNA had been maintained on a database in the UK after he had been arrested there. There is no DNA in Ireland.

Nolan was sentenced to 14 years for rape in 1986.

Following his release from prison, he was jailed again for 18 months in 2009 for burglary.

He was released from the Midlands Prison on 22 November 2010 but his whereabouts are unknown. His parents have passed away and his family in Finglas have not seen him.

Gardaí are now trying to establish the circumstances in which he lost his arm and although he could still be alive, they fear he could have been killed.

This is pretty grim. Read it this morning over breakfast.

looks like someone has held a grudge (which is one more thing than this chap is going to be holding).

He had a list of convictions as long as his arm, did they not have his finger prints on record?

The guy is/was a rapist and obviously 14 years in the lockup didn't rehabilitate him since he was done again for burglary (although maybe he hasn't raped again). But saying he got what he deserved by having his arm chopped off by someone (even after he did his time) is pretty fcuking sick. People who say sh!t like that really only do so to sound macho.

There will be a few upset Gardai if his corpse is found. I hope there will be a big turnout to pay homage to the rapist/ burglar/ whatever else.

    Justice has been served IMHO.

btw, it's harder to rape with one arm, I'd imagine. Tryin to hold knife and undo pants simultaneously, AWKWAAARD!!

So instead of sending someone to prison you propose that they have various limbs amputated (without anaesthetic), correct?

Who do you think ought to do the dismembering and what should the compensation be for the wrongly convicted?

The Burglary case was from before he went to prison the first time.

A local butcher to chop it off and a hook for compensation :pac:

I would imagine that the finger prints were probably unreadable, what with decomposition from being in the water.

I don't understand why we can't do the DNA tests in Ireland.

Who said this guy was wrongly convicted? He was guilty and deserved what he got.

And as per your other comment, no not just to sound "macho" as you put it, But if some scumbag raped a member of my family yeah I'd chop him up aswell.
Fúck him. Rape is one of the most horrible crimes there is. The victim has to live with it for the rest of their life but the scum who did it are released and free to do it again and again.

If he was convicted of rape shouldnt he of been noticed missing before this IE: Should he not be on a sex offenders list?
I assumed if you had been convicted of rape in this country the guards would know where you live and what you are bloody well up to?

Don't they do parental tests using DNA?. I think the issue is there is no DNA database in Ireland.

Pretty pathetic that we had to send DNA samples to the UK for them to tell us he had just recently been released from one of our own prisons.

Anyone know where Larry Murphy is since the papers stopped following him around all day...I doubt the guards do.

It's all the other one armed people in the country I feel sorry for, they are going to be getting some strange looks over the next few days.

I don't know where parental tests are done.

Even if there is no DNA database in Ireland, we could still do the actual test here, and send the results to England to be analysed. I would have thought that would be more secure than adding another link to the evidence chain by sending DNA away.

Interesting story, though I would have preferred if they cut of his dick, arms, legs, and removed his eyeballs, and left him to live in misery.

That reminds me, I wonder what ever happened to Larry Murphy. Probably off raping and murdering people in France/Spain, or wherever it is he's hiding out. That scumbag should be tortured for the rest of his life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,967 ✭✭✭✭Zulu

meh, can't say I've any sympathy for him. In fact, I can't say I wasn't glad when I heard the arm belonged to a convicted rapist TBH.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I read this as the offece being committed in the UK, therefore there the ones who prosecuted and convicted him and stored his DNA.

I think the point was that IF someone was wrongly convicted. Remember the case of the woman who came forward and admitted that, when she was 13, she made a false sexual abuse claim against someone as part of a family fued; but waited 10 more years before coming forward to clear his name.

Are you saying he should have had his arm hacked off as well?

"Live by the sword die by the sword"?

So now our justice system should be based upon cliches?

So what do you propose we do with arsonists, set them on fire?
    Steal back from thieves?
Publicly beat up prepetrators of assault?

Do you propose also that the person(s) who mutilated this guy should not be prosecuted since they were carrying out the wishes that satisfied your own personal bloodlust?

I think its plainly obvious prison is not adequate rehab for sexual predators. Yeah i'd have been happy if someone cut off his balls but they cut off his arm and most likely he is dead. I have 0 sympathy for him.

I'm not saying I propose it, i'm saying after the fact i dont really care that he was hacked up and fed to the fishes.
