    1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

    2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

    3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

    4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

    5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

    6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

    7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

    8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

    9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

    10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

You've all had me in tears here reading your stories :-(

Same as bringing a lot of memories back.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and love the little poem. Might use that if you don't mind and put it in a frame with picture of him, maybe not quite yet but some where down the line.

I know time is a great healer but at the moment that time feels like it is going to be soooo far away.

Our two other dogs seem lost without him even thought he wasn't a playful dog in his last few years the others seem to miss him, but they are getting so much more extra love and attention at the moment.

I have this poem on my fridge with a pics of doggies iv lost. Its so tough losing a pet and this poem reminds me they stay in our hearts forever.

Stood Beside Your Bed Last Night

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear.
    "Its me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here"
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea.
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore.
I want to take your parcels, I wished I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for the key,
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me".

You looked so very tired and then you sank into a chair,
I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.
Its possible for me to be so near you everyday,
to say to you with certainty "I never went away".
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew
That in the stillness of that evening I was very close to you.
The day is over.... I smile and watch you yawning
and say, " Good Night, Sweet Dreams, God Bless,
I'll see you in the morning".
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide
I'll rush to greet you and well stand together side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there's much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out; then come home and be with me.

Ah crap now I'm crying at my desk in work, blaming it on the hay fever!!!

i'm also crying at my desk in work. God, reading this makes me so sad. My poor girl maggie may died last July. (she was a boxer and she was only 4 when she died). She had a brain tumor and was having unbelievably bad seizures and in the end she wasnt able to even stand up. My husband and I had to make the painful decision to have her PTS. It was the most awful time of my life. I posted a thread here at the time and everyone's comments were so nice. I still cry every single day. She was the most beautiful dog. The time i posted my thread here, somebody sent a link which really touched me. I think maybe you might like it too.

Its been over 8 months since maggie died and to be honest i dont know if i'll ever get over it. she honestly was like a child to me and my husband. we completely spoilt her rotten. We got another dog since maggie died and i'd be lying if i said she hasnt brought me happiness but every time i think of maggie i get this pang in my chest and all those feelings come rushing back. some days i can think of her and smile, other days when i think of her it just makes me sad that she is no longer with me. But at the end of the day I know there was nothing more we could have done for her and it was the right thing to do. I completely know how you feel and my heart goes out to you.

I had to put my beautiful little Jack Russell Penny to sleep last September. It really broke my heart, she was 16 years old and had liver failure. She was getting sick for a couple of days and wouldnt move out of her basket, and i kept praying that she would get better. But she had to be put to sleep. I stayed with her the whole time and kept telling her that she was a great girl.

A friend of mine sent me this poem and it really helped. I hope it helps you too.

If it be I grow frail and weak,
And pain should wake me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come will hold no fears,
You'll not want me to suffer so,
When the time comes to let me go.

I know in time you too will see,
It is kindness you do to me,
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Do not grieve that it should be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

He is sooo gorgeous, :D:D lots of happy years for you together, and I'm sure you will always have a special place in your heart for Bruno, what have you called your new boy?

  • Registered Users Posts: 436 ✭✭eeyore2502

Thanks, will never forget Bruno he was a great dog.

The name for the puppy caused a bit of trouble in the house as I wanted to call him Jovi as in Bon Jovi, as I'm a small bit of a fan but hubby wouldn't agree :(

In the end we went with Ozzie as his first morning with us was the Oz Ireland Rugby match. In so many ways the name is suiting him, think he has a split personality like Ozzie Osbourne, angel one minute and absolute devil the next but still love him to bits.

Thanks, the vet had been telling us for the last two years that he was living on borrowed time alright but he was still pretty ok and on regular check ups.

Hope you get another 8 years out of your lad. They are great dogs.

All sympathy to all... One of the hardest things is that we outlive our pets.

Living in very isolated places so much has meant that we have nursed our pets to the end. In only one case did we regret that, and in others the regret was that we could not get the medication to end the pain ourselves. This worries me still as we tend not to use vets.

Not to have a complete stranger coming in. Collie hates strangers.
