Yep, that's what they charge for an admin fee, the booklet they gave you when you took up insurance with them details this. Ask them to email your NCB to you and then just get a new quote off them online ;)

I was charged 20 but this was due to my new address being in a more high risk area afaik.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭rubicon99

that is so insane. I thougt that it is in any comapnys intrest to have correct details of their install base, but apperently not.

What is NCB by the way?

Yes. They'll charge you €40 everytime you want to make any change including a temporary transfer to another car.

I cancelled my poilcy with them because of this and was charged €40 to cancel, another €40 for early cancellation and they kept over half the remaining premium when the policy was only 3 months old.

I will never, ever do business with them again.

That's exactly what stopped me from getting insurance from them.

Not fully correct. It's €10 for a temp transfer, €40 for a permanent change. I believe Hibernian charge €50 for a temp transfer!

Quinn charged me 80 for changing my address from Sligo to South Dublin!

No claims bonus, you ned this :)

I changed my insurance from one car to another on a Friday €40, gearbox went on the one I transferred to on the Saturday. Transferred insurance to a 3rd car on the Monday, another €40. Strangely enough the docs for the gearbox blown car never arrived so obviously they hadn't posted them so I thought that was a tad tight of them.

they funny think is that they said if i call about 10 days before policy expiration, it will be free

could anyone advise on other cheapn insurance company or a comparison site perhaps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,699 ✭✭✭ronaneire

Easy money for them all. I got charged or invoiced €30 for transferring to temporary van until another came along. Low and behold they wanted another €30 from me.
Needless to say when I was transferring to the current van I questioned the fee and I didn't have to pay anything.

They wanted €40 off me for a temporary transfer. I had just bought a new car and knew I would be changing back and forth till I sold the old one. I had no option but to cancel the policy.

I have never been charged for this service by any other company/broker and i've been through quite a few of them over the years.

They can chose to drop this fee over the phone when talking to them. I was transferring before and when I heard about the fee I started asking for an invoice with a break down of the costs and an explaination as to why it costs so much, eventually they just dropped the fee altogether.

The 3 years I've been getting insurance (starting as a 20 year old male with no prev driving history) I've never found anywhere that came close to insure.ie's quotes. They have been super for me.

I'm with FBD and I've never been charged for change of address. I've updated it aound 3 times the last two years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭Uriel.

The same thing happened to me. Canceled the change of address and arranged with the occupants of my old address to get the documents to ke wen they arrived.

Refused to renew any of my insurance policies with them as a result (car and home). Weeks after the renewal dates passed on each i received calls from them wanting to know why I didn't renew with them. They got an earful onthe matter. They are unlikely to get any further business from me in tw future as a result

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭busman

A bit from left field but why not make a data protection act request.
When you get your info say that your address is incorrect and that you wish they correct it! Max charge 6.35 :D

Likewise. I have home and pet insurance with them and won't be renewing either since my experience with them on motor insurance. It's a very short sighted way to run a business.

You were overcharged so. I did a temp transfer a few weeks ago and it cost a tenner.

Also, surley it must cost them money to print out renewals offer and send it to insurance holder as well.

Wouldnt it be in their intrest that the person is actally reciving the documents!? If it was 5 euro admin fee I might have not cared, but 40 bucks for 10 second job that anyone with brain can do.

hello, Planet Earth calling 123, are u there???

This is how these online companies can afford to undercut other insurance companies, once they have you signed up they make it back by charging admin fees for this and that. Swings and roundabouts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 SimonF

I've changed my car and address numerous times with quinn and only ever been charged based on the car I'm changing to.
Also have a temp car on the moment and no charge at all.
policy is up soon and got a cheaper qoute from 123.ie but now I'm cautious of changing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭rubicon99

i had to pay 40€ admin fee when I changed my car. I had to live with though as I thought it's standard porcedure. So they will charge you for that as well.

i insured my car with them in jan 3rd party f & t, then got a new car in feb. Changed the policy to the new car and had to pay €40. I thought, ok thats fair enough, because its a whole new car, but then after a few days i thought i'd be better off moving up to fully comp, because the new one is worth a bit more.I got a quote of an extra €140 and another €40 on top of that just to change the policy up to fully comp. I have no prob with paying the €140, i actually think thats good value but another €40 admin charge only a week or so after the first admin charge. Thats a bit greedy isn't it! And i also have the house insurance with them. Thats no way to treat existing customers in my opinion.
The way i see it, i have given them over a grand in the last 3 years in car insurance alone and never once claimed a thing, not even windscreen or breakdown. So its not cost them a penny to insure me, or to put another way, money for nothing. So the least they could do, is make the odd minor change here and there out of gratitude for my business, without piling on the hidden charges.

They're not hidden, they are all listed in the motor insurance policy booklet.

But i didn't get my booklet till after i bought insurance.

It's part of their T&C - freely available when you sign up - even online. IIRC you even have to click the little check box that confirms that you've actually read the T&C.

Bear in mind that their premiums are that low because they do not pass on admin costs associated with these changes to all their policy holders, instead only the ones who avail of said services.

Sorry OP, no sympathy from me.

If you're with them three years you should know all about the charges, I'd be fairly sure they sent out a booklet with your first car policy 3 years ago :pac:

But I think SI 853/2004 allows for this if you bought using distance selling.

You can cancel without reason and without penalty up to 14days after you receive full details of the policy (Sect 11.6). There are exemptions to this rule (Sect 12) and I don't know if motor insurance is exempted.

Naturally if you bought in person then you should have requested to read the policy terms before buying.

You can still change online FOC, I did it once by phone and they insisted on being paid, I refused and they let it go.

And they'll still charge you €40 to change it, so it'd be €46.35, as it's a admin fee for any policy changes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,786 ✭✭✭slimjimmc

And they have 40 days to give you your personal info from receipt of your written request and another 40 days from receipt of your written request to correct it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭katnia

I got mugged by them for €40 recently when changing car details, they then came back to say the insurer had requested another €39. I'm fine about the €39 because that's the actual underwriting charge but it made me sick paying the €40 because you have to remember they are only an insurance broker which means that they are being paid by the insurer (RSA) for all premiums and adjustments made on the policy during the policy year. So they pocket the €40 and make a commission on the €39. It stinks really. I never mind paying the fee for an actual change in the policy, but it kills me to know that they are creaming it two ways.

BUYER BEWARE ON THIS CROWD ME THINKS.....

Sorry for dredging up an old thread, but just to share my experience of 123.ie, my renewel is due in a week and I'm going to get rid of the car when the policy ends. So obviously, I will still be charged €40 to say i won't be renewing with them this year.

Can I just say that I won't pay this fee and leave it at that?

What makes you think that? Just don't renew, they'll send out your NCB with the remewal. They can't charge you an admin fee for not renewing, that's looney.

They're not really a broker in the traditional sense of the word since they're now wholly owned by RSA. Think of 123.ie as the internet channel for RSA- just like you can get a quote from AXAdirect.ie or Aviva.ie

Well this thread has ensured I will never use 123 for anything! I currently am with AIB (Aviva) and its stress free and reasonable plus they give an Intrest FREE direct debit option which is great!

I wouldn't let a €40 admin fee put you off, my insurance was only €300 with them, allows 3 admin fees before they are as expensive as the competition. I don't envisage changing address or car over the coming 12 months so I don't envisage any €40 admin fees :)

The thing is I don't have a problem paying €40 admin fee for starting a new policy or a permanent transfer, but €40 to cancel a policy is a bit greedy IMO.:(

It's just bad company policy IMO, and its one way of turning away prospective business too.

Cancelling a policy and not renewing one are two different things, not renewing is not cancelling and there is no charge for it. If you do not renew a policy when it expires there will be no €40 fee.

Got my auto renewal quote from AIB (aviva) and its cheaper then any quote I can find online... have to say very happy with the service and the fact that there is an interest free direct debit option is brilliant as most companies charge like 24% APR!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,990 ✭✭✭JustAddWater

    It's a rip off

I was with 25plus previous and they used to let me change things like address etc online for free to avoid admin fee's

€40 for them to post out a cert? I don't need a new cert!

Bit pee'd off at it TBH, I told them i'd call back later, didn't pay it yet

You can just ring them up about the renewal and they email it too you dont need the stuff they post out.

I changed address during the year but just waited until I was renewing and changed my address then for free.
