These new branded names are great

If you find someone using the branded name you know straight away they are an easily influenced sell-out and not to take them seriously

They should rename it the Ohtue. It rolls off the tongue keyboard better

The point is the sponsors get their name mentioned every time something happens in said stadium. It's all about the brand recognition.

All the big arenas in the US are brand named, or the majority of them anyway, I loved Ford Field when I was in Detroit, amazing arena:

Same here. If people don't go along with it, we might not have any more of this nonsense in the future.

because everytime there's a match in the Aviva stadium Avivia gets a mention...

    everything there's a concert in the O2, O2 get a mention...

then your going to get a new insurance premium and you see the name Aviva and for some reason you trust it because it sounds like it's good because you always hear it's name...

or you trust O2 when your going for a new phone because you've heard it's name so much...

you mightn't think it but I'd say you've been influenced by advertising many times in your life without you even knowing...

branded venues is just another form of advertising

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,174 ✭✭✭✭kmart6

Everyone will say that they won't change, and will always call venues by the original name, I was the same, but agter doing my thesis on the Landsdowne and now find myself calling it the Aviva.

Just go see them in some provincial town in the UK instead (usually works out cheaper than seeing them in Dublin anyway).

Good idea. I already do that.

this is rather popular in Australia, but mainly for the NRL Stadiums, and well theres a game that started life by selling out rugby So Whadaya expect.

it did catch on a bit with AFL what with the Telstradome and optusoval, but that came to a stop when someone wanted to rebrand Subiaco Oval in Perth as ''Crazy Johns'' stadium
    ended that notion fierce quick

Some of them are but I think most aren't. Giant's Stadium, Shea Stadium, Nassau Coliseum, Soldier Field, The Garden, etc. Most are just named after the team that play there methinks.

The Point was knocked down. It doesn't exist anymore. On it's grounds a new venue was built. It is called The O2. Refusing to call it by it's name because it's also the name of a company is a bit silly. Insisting on calling it the name of a building that no longer exists is equally so.

You better tell the Luas operators that and the Gibson Hotel beside it who are very confused.

Oh, better rename Croke Park, The Drumcondra so. And rename The Aviva, The Ballsbridge too.

They're all still at the same location. Aviva still at Lansdowne road, O2 at The Point. Rebranding sites for the benefit of big corporations doesn't change where they are nor does it change their historic significance.

It's named after the original Point Depot, not the Point venue. O2 don't own the area, so it's not called the O2 Village.

Because it stops in the Point Village?

They haven't rebranded the site. They built a new building and gave it a name.

The redevelopment of Lansdowne Rd represents for me the very worst of Celtic Tiger hubris and stupidity.

Its far too small to be called a proper National Stadium.

As a consequence of its utterly laughable 51,000 capacity the shortfall in ticket sales has to be made up by making 17,000 or so of the seats "Premium".

This means that only 34,000 of the seats in our national stadium are available for members of the public not connected in some way to Corporate Ireland.

These tickets will set you back €50 at the very, very least.

The FAI/IRFU can't afford to bring the prices of these tickets down as there costing projections are as far as im aware based on full houses for every competitive game.

If the FAI/IRFU had not sold the naming rights to the stadium they could have brought major games like last Saturday's v England to Croke Park reduced ticket prices by say 10-15% and still made a better profit then they would in Dublin 4.

The naming of it the Aviva stadium, while disgraceful, is a minor issue in comparison to the lack of access to see either of the national teams for a reasonable price.

As much as I'd love the OP to be right, and as much as i fecking hate the idea of these sponsored stadiums (wouldn't have such a problem with venues like the Point) but plenty, in fact most people now call them both the Aviva and the O2, you just slip into it, i find myself doing it far too often for my liking.

So what? Does that mean everything that's built in the area must legally be called "The Point ..."?

    Then they've got it wrong.

And again, do you not understand that it's a different building? It's got a different name and all. The Point is gone.

See, you're confusing a desire not to change with things not actually changing. People can keep on calling it the Point all they want, but that doesn't mean it's called the Point.

Its been a theatre/railway depot at the Point for decades, it's location has not changed. The theatre at the Point was rebuilt into another bigger theatre called The O2, it's still a theatre at the Point no matter what name goes on it.

Has anyone official lodged a complaint about it? The council certainly have not.

The Point is still there, it has not moved out to the sea :D

So if down the line, O2 lost the naming rights to Vodafone, will you be calling it "The Vodafone" instead?

Or how about "the Quinn Direct" for the stadium?
