Hi all, just received new permission on 820 acre land for deer next season, calling down this Sunday to walk the land, however, the land owner wants myself and my shooting buddy to take some feral goats also when we call down, is there a season for wild goats?
Also, having never hunted goats, any help and tips would be received gratefully.

    Thanks and regards.

No season for feral goats BUT... Be sure that they are actually feral and ensure that they are on your permission when shooting them.
I have heard of a few lads that run into difficulty by an adjoining land owner claiming that the goats were his.

Post here will give you all the seasons.
......... Be sure that they are actually feral ......

Major +1 on that. Its amazing how "feral goats" become a beloved family pet when shot.

As to actualy shooting them. I always recommend a deer caliber rifle. They are a tough enough animal and need a good clean shot like deer.

thanks for the replys lads, yep, these are feral goats on his 800+ acres, so dont think we will be crossing over into someone elses property, will be shooting them with my tikka t3 .270 and my buddy has a tikka .243, same as we use on deer, so no worries of using a small caliber rifle on them.

    regards.

A lot of goats have bad feet, we used to shoot the lame ones (which also were the bigger Puck's on average)

Most goats group together and as a result are fairly easily track by their smell alone.

The Indian lads will take as many kid goats as you can get.

Some eat the kid goats, I don't like them; but many others do.
If you want to keep them for their cape it's the hardest shot as if you shoot them too far forward they will have a big hole in the cape.

If you just want the scull shoot them in the spine or heart lung, as the neck can be hard to judge as they have a lot of excess hair there.

thanks for that tackleberry, we only shoot for the table, not very interested in skulls or the like.

roll on sunday :) happy days, a nice hike and stalk up mountains, maybe if we are lucky a couple of shots and home, aaahhhhhhhh.

Hope to post a few pics if we get lucky.

Bring a dog and you will be lead straight to them.

They tend not to run if they have not been shot at before.
Go for the kids then so, later in the year only take the female kids as the puck kids start getting strong to taste around august or so

Kid is supposed to be nice done on a spit

not to worry landkeeper, very respectfull of nature and shooting deer for a few seasons, would not be shooting females who look like they are ready to give birth or have done so.

    :)

Get a loan of one :D

And as landkeeper said, keep away from the females as some are carrying young or have young at foot, especially if you want to eat them.

Last years female kids/yearlings would be well suited for the pot this month.

If you see an elder on her she is a nanny and tough

Welcome to the poor man's deer stalking!

I consider them to be out of season at the moment as they are dropping and minding young...
If I was shooting one in the next month I would go for a young billy, but I've never tried one of these for the table- I have butchered them for the dogs...

That Kid on a spit looks excellent- Will Have to try that in the summer! :D

no season on goats but common sense would suggest to shoot sick and lame animals as well as the kids for the table.
some of them have had young for the past few weeks so try not to shoot a nursing nanny.
goats are not a spooky as deer so they should be easy enough to stalk

other than that you seem to have it all in order so enjoy your hunting

Have some videos up on youtube, look under medic1man or kenmare mountains
and there are some there, tried to link them, but new to this video linking on boards.

p.s.. all taken with iphone so please excuse quality.
