What box are you going to tick for religion in the census?

I am putting this poll here instead of the religious forums in the effort to attract a broader sweep of people. I got some feedback on this before posting: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056209889

The effort is to see roughly how many non practising Catholics will tick the Catholic box in the census?

    By non practising I mean:
    1. You don't go mass
    2. You think sex before marriage is ok.
    3. You don't say the Rosary.
    4. You don't believe in things like the Resurrection
    5. You don't go to confession
    6. You don't believe communion is actually the Body of Jesus
    7. You wouldn't bother you if you didn't get some ash on your forehead for ash Wednesday.

    But you might
    1. Get marriage in a church
    2. Go to mass at Christmas
    3. Get your kids baptised or send them to a catholic school

Which box will you tick in the census for Religion? 1028 votes

No Religion - I have spiritual believes but don't see what religion box I can tick!

    But you might

    3. Send them to a catholic school

90% of schools are still catholic, I might have to send my kid to a catholic school. Shudder.

How many of these threads do we need?

People will tick the box that they want to tick. That's the end of it. Stop trying to dictate to people what they should and should not do.

If a Catholic wants to call themselves Atheist or an Atheist wants to call themselves Catholic then that's their own prerogative. We don't need a million threads reminding people not to tick the box beside Catholic.

For the record, I won't be ticking the box beside Catholic.

I'm going to close my eyes and jab at the census form. So I may be a black, Islamic, fluent Irish speaker with 18 kids, or I may be a retarded person with a load of pen marks all over the page. We'll see.

I'm going to put down my current denomination of Christianity: CofI

I think people should be honest on the census first and foremost. I'm not expecting there to be a tidal wave of change, I would expect Catholicism at worst to be in the 70% region.

Yes and No. For all other religions you don't need the a la carte option.
It's Catholicism that tends to yield most of this behaviour.

From experience I'd probably argue that mainline Protestants can be about as nominal, perhaps even more so.

Edit: It seems to be through a personal understanding of who God is that makes people become active in that such an encounter is life-changing.

    Well you'd know better.

What I was thinking was the Protestant Churches don't make as many demands on you so it was actually harder to be a non practising Protestant.
Or in the more extreme versions (the bible belt in the US or Northern Ireland) they all buy into it and it was hard to find much deviation.

This makes the assumption that all Protestants have liberal beliefs. A lot of people seem to think this.

I would argue that a sizeable proportion in Ireland do.

I guess if you squared up some of my beliefs with what the RCC would put forward some of them would differ such as having no objection the use of contraceptives in and of itself, communion being a symbolic presentation of the last supper etc, more emphasis on a personal relationship with Jesus rather than ritual, others would overlap with the RCC such as marriage being the correct context for sexual activity. Other more liberal Protestants would disagree on a number of these things.

I'd tick the 'Agnostic' box, but definitely not the 'Atheist' box, so where does that leave me with this poll? ;)

There's as much difference between my beliefs and the certain beliefs of an atheist as there is between my beliefs and the certain beliefs of a practising Catholic/Christian. That's sort of the point in being an agnostic! :)

Who said atheists are certain? Most atheists are agnostic too, its possible to be both.

As far as I'm aware there's a distinct difference between both: an atheist is certain God doesn't exist; an agnostic isn't certain and reckons it cannot be known. This is a distinction I got from a dictionary:

Atheist: a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

Agnostic: a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as god, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.

So an agnostic atheists is someone who understands that god can't be known, and therefore doesn't believe in him.

It's not difficult. Most atheists are agnostics.

Get a better dictionary. Very few atheists claim to be completely certain that god doesn't exist.. Atheism deals with belief, agnosticism deals with knowledge, they are not two points on a linear scale, its more like this.

Read the wikipedia pages on atheism and agnosticism for a better idea of the different types and the actual assertions each position holds.

Indeed, although one would question what value agnosticism has when you believe the existence of God is only as probable as fairies existing at the back of your garden alá Richard Dawkins. Limited at best.

Rubbish! I'm an atheist and I'm not certain god doesn't exist...I have just never been given a reason to support belief that one exists...from Apollo to Zeus. I lack belief in something until I see some kind of rational reason to support belief in it's existence, much like you and tooth-fairies. Are you denying the existence of the tooth-fairy?
