XF-S vs. 535d

We all know that the 535d is a cracking car (So much that some people pretend to own one:D) but the only manufacturer to really take the fight to them is Jaguar with the XF diesel S and I have great admiration for that.

it's a tiny bit behind the F10 535d now but hopefully the facelift later this year will rectify that.

But which would you have XF-S or 535d? feel free to specify E60 or F10.

Jag without a doubt, the interior is 10x better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,718 ✭✭✭Matt Simis

Id want to want the Jag, if I was in the market for such a car I would certainly test drive one.
I already know what the 535d is like.

Just flicked up the car configure option on BMW.ie there - good Lord you could have some amount of fun with the options!!

If you could have interior of Jag and exterior of e60 535 that would be perfect.Although the Jag looks good too.Ahhh feck it ill have both:)

I'm biased so won't bother commenting!

    Do love the 535d though.

The XF-S is good - especially if you spec the dynamics pack option.

Basically you end up with an XFR chassis and body.

Surprising how quick they both are too, having driven an XF-S in anger following a 2008 XK 4.2 V8 normally aspirated.........well the XF was quicker really!

As an owner of a 535d I am biased. I can only speak about the 535d as I have never driven the Jag. It is a cracking car - I have said before that it is one of the best all round cars on the road. I have driven it to the Nurburgring in convoy with some stripped out e34 M5s and a Carrera S and it more than held it's own on the journey. I do a mix of motorway and city driving and it will deliver 30-35mpg all day long.

It is on run-flats and a lot of people don't like that - personally it doesn't bother me at all and they can always be changed.

The Jag can look really good and it has had some cracking reviews so I can only imagine that for some it will be a match for the 535d, however for me I would be quite happy to choose the 535d over it

love the F10 and bmw in general, but the road is already littered with 520ds. The Jag is a lot rarer and 'special' as they aren't everywhere you look with small engines dressed up with body kits.

So for now I'd have the Jag if buying new.

I've never driven a 535d, but even the 530d is a cracking car (E60, haven't seen any F10 530's yet), but I have driven this bad boy:

    11052010027.jpg

For all the BMW has going for it, it just isn't a Jag. That might make the BMW more desireable for some people, but for me it's the XF-S all the way.

Currently saving my pennies for when this comes back in 2013. Premium Luxury version - the driver has taste ;)

Jesus, I'd be very happy with either! That jag is beautiful though.

How was it to drive? Was it the 3.0d or 3.0d s? I'd imagine you can't entirely divulge information about the owner but could you tell me what line of business he's in or what his job is? Have to say I'm wondering what job commands such a sweet company car!

Yeah, I think the XF-S with the aerodynamics pack looks much nicer than the XFR.

The new standard interior for the XF-S is pretty nice aswell, think it's probably my favourite interior! Side bolsters are electrically adjustable too!

F10 535 hands down, own neither, driven both, no comparison.

The Jag will depreciate like a rock, it just doesn't have that "I'll be as sturdy after 200K miles feel" it feels made up.

Unfortunately, when I delivered that car it was wet, so I was taking it very, very easy. It a XF 3.0d S Premium Luxury and we'll just say he's the Irish Boss of a mulitnational.

He test drove the standard car before deciding, and that felt slower than the 525d (3.0 litre engine) that was his previous car, so decided to go for the S.

Jag all the way - still such a beautiful design 3 years on plus the interior is such a nice place to be.

Surprised the Jag is so far ahead given the BMW fanboi-ism in here. :D

It would be the XF for me, the billions Ford invested in Jaguar, really shows in the XF diesel. It's hard to compare Jaguars with mass produced cars.

Nice! What do you estimate it's cost to be in 2013? Think I'll be in the market around then if things go according to plan, wouldn't mind snatching myself a similar model!

It's quite worrying that he found it slower than the 525d considering it has significantly higher bhp and torque.

I've also heard that the XF-S doesn't feel as quick as a 535d. Can anyone who has driven both confirm if this is true or false??

P.S. cheers for the poll addition -chris- and mods

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

I've also heard that the XF-S is comparable to a 530d for performance.

    Remember it's got 272 bhp compared to 286 in the E60 535d and 299 in the F10 535d.

Considering all the harsh criticism of how the F10 drives, I think it is fairly obvious that if you want a big comfortable saloon that also drives well then only Jaguar makes something that will satisfy you these days.

Anything I've read about the XF clearly states that the XF is a delight to drive and has great steering as well.

BMW is only a shadow of what it used to be these days, deliberately making cars that are not good to drive (the founders of BMW must be turning in their graves), getting rid of their famous naturally aspirated straight six petrol engines in favour of common as muck small displacement four cylinder engines with turbochargers (and we all know how spectacularly unreliable BMWs with turbochargers tend to be:rolleyes:), and even worse: front wheel drive. All you are paying for with a BMW these days is for the badge, the same as people who drive Audis do.

An F10 M Sport does not get the M Sport suspension if you ask for adaptive drive or variable damper control either - only passively damped F10 M Sports get sports suspension for some bizarre reason.

It's the same power output as the pre LCI model and it's got a bit more torque. It still even has more torque than the LCI model. Although the F10 is clearly a bit ahead with power and matches the torque.

Does anyone know if the XF facelift will see an upgrade in power output?

Still doesn't make since that a regular 3.0D feels slower than a 525d or that the XF-S isn't noticeably quicker than a 530d.

Interesting to see that the XF-S is doing so well in the poll though!

Could it be that nobody wants 6 cylinder petrol engines and every body wants diesel.

I'm sure BMW could only make 6 cylinders for their cars but they wouldn't last too long. BMW have dominated the market in recent years because their diesel engines are so good.

I'm guessing that the founders of BMW would be pleased that their company has risen to the position it now holds in the market.

Diesel unfortunately is the way forward. Even Porsche are starting to make diesels. BMW have had to do the same as everyone else and embrace diesel.

BTW I'd have the Jag as well purely because it looks the business and is more interesting

It seems most diehards with this opinion have a very selective memory of BMW over the last 20+ years.

The last 2 gens of M5s didnt have 6pots and people love'em. The only E31 (8series) scheduled to have a 6pot was the weener peasant version (830i, never put into production, the 7 should have never had a straight 6 either), BMW had forced induction petrol cars 25years ago etc etc.
Front Wheel drive... on what? School run mom cars. Most moms dont give a $hit, FWD is a better drivetrain for these vehicle buyers.
Come back and complain when the 535d, M5 or 6 series is FWD.

While I'm sure someone will have figures to hand but I'm guessing the 5 series outsells its direct rival the E class by a fair margin. Same for the Audi A6 even though the A6 is cheaper.

I heard and have no reason to doubt that during the boom years that the BMW 3 series outsold the Ford Mondeo even though the BMW cost way more.

The new Jag does nothing for me, I can't see why so many seem to be voting for it, i've nothing against Jaguar, in fact I drive a Daimler and a BMW. I go with the 535 any day over the Jag. I think that Jaguar have lost the plot re. distinct styling, the new one just looks like any other bland exec car, Lexus or similar.

    Double-six?

Nice cars but In fairness those cars are from different generations and aren't really comparable. Go drive the XF 3.0d S and inform me as to how it compares!

    +1.

The XF is by all accounts (even allowing for the love-in by the British press) an excellent car - much better than the 5 series. The up and coming four cylinder XF will mean that soon Jaguar will have a serious competitor in the Irish car market, though I suppose Ireland being the country that it is and the general populance's complete ignorance about cars, it still won't even get a look in because it's not German!

I'd say a lot of that was down to the change in model on the 5 Series. No dealers were ordering for stock, they were all made to pre-reg their existing stock and Sterling Collection cars. The new model wasn't available until halfway through the year.

I think this would lead to a lean enough year last year, and a front-loading this year as the demand catches up, for the 5 Series.

I'm sure the same effect will be felt when the new A6 comes out - people always want the latest and greatest model, especially when it comes to the "golf club car park" cars.
