i am looking to get into deer shooting and love the .308s i have a shotgun and a .22 already. I will be passing on the .22 and am looking for a .308 as i have fallen in love with these. how hard will it prove to get a .308 for deer hunting and what kind of money will a second hand setup cost me?
also how much will it cost to get everything that i need to acquire the licence? all advice welcome

You will need a deer license in order to apply for the rifle (assuming you are not a member of an authorised range). You supply your license with your FCA1 and this will provide the "good reason" for wanting the rifle. In some cases the NPWS may provide you with a letter to say that they have received your application and based on the details you provided you should/will be granted a license before the season starts. Licenses/renewals aren't normally sent out until later though if this is your first application its best get it in now as there is usually a bit more checking done for first time applications than renewals.

How hard will depend on your Super, but i cannot see an issue once you provide the necessary documentation.
........... and what kind of money will a second hand setup cost me?

Unfortunately its like asking how long is a piece of string. The cost is limited by your budget. A second hand setup with decent scope and all the "basics" could be gotten for €1200 - €1500. You could go as far as €3500 - €4000 if you want new or "top quality". Even if you could narrow it down to prefered make/model then you will get a better answer as to expected prices.
........ also how much will it cost to get everything that i need to acquire the licence? all advice welcome

If you are getting rid of the .22lr and end up with the shotgun and .308 ONLY then your security setup should remain as is. Assuming the Super does not require further measures which he has the right to.

So the only extra cost is the rifle and the lease (if getting a coilte lease) or free if you have your own land/permissions to shoot.

Feel like i'm forgetting something, but i think thats it.

deer licence is free to my best knowledge but you must get permission off 2 farmers with their signature, acreage and folio numbers

If youre going to be pedantic about it i never said anyone did:confused:

Now would you have to change your security arrangements because you have two rifles as opposed to one?

you can own 3 unrestricted firearms with your normal gunsafe
Each firearm shall be stored in a gun safe which complies with BS 7558 and which shall be securely fixed to a solid structure.

    more than 3 unrestriced
Each firearm shall be stored in a gun safe which complies with BS 7558 and which shall be securely fixed to a solid structure.
The place in which the firearms are stored shall
have an alarm fitted and the external doors to the
place shall be fitted with locks which comply with
    BS 3621.

As mentioned the license is free, and you will need a minimum of 2 permissions from land owners. The more you can get the better.

It may not, but as always the standard is the MINIMUM standard and is subject to the decision of your Super who may demand that you increase security with a larger caliber rifle.
Now would you have to change your security arrangements because you have two rifles as opposed to one?

As above. Its up to the Super.

The Super at the time I asked for my first Deer stalking calibre, that I had the safe installed and that it met with the Crime prevention officers seal of approval.(he came to inspect)

There is a min standard, however If you live in a high crime area may expect to have to adhere to higher standards.

If I was going to be pedantic I'd tell you that Ezridax already answered your first question in his first post on this thread.

I therefore assumed you were not asking a question already answered

You might miss not having a smaller calibre though.

I prefer my .223 for bunnies over the .308.

Don't forget to apply FOR A MODERATOR as .308 is ear piercingly loud as I am sure you are well aware.

many forget to and regret it later!

Yes, if the first was unrestricted and the second one wasn't. Also yes if you already had two other firearms (pistols or shotguns or whatever) before you got the second rifle. All of this is laid out in the great big flashing red announcement at the top of the forum, by the way.

    God no.

Whats the point of having a discussion forum if you cannot discuss topics. Disagree away.

Out of curiosity what size is your one permission?

    150 acres only.....

    My 1 written permission is 385 acres~

However, I know fellas who got theirs on 45 acres (they were in small farms in the middle of forestry in slieve blooms)

The ranger told me there would have to be a "known" population for application to be considered.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,697 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Obviously enough. I had just over 2,000 acres with the 17 and this season got another 2 bringing me up to nearly 2,300.

When i went for my first one the ranger (friend of Father) told me to include 2 permissions minimum so i took it as necessary.

I started out with 3 permissions consisting of just under 400 acres. Word of mouth from farmer to farmer got the rest over the last 9 years. The two this season were actually farmers that rang me, saying they heard good things about my Father, me and the lads i shoot with, and offered the land on the good word of the permissions i already shoot.

Goes to show lads, if you mind your permissions, do a bit of work for the land owners during the off season, a bit of vermin control it pays in the long run.

I got first permission off a guy who taught me in school, the next of my landlady whilst in college.

    The rest grew from there.
The fact my dad was well liked locally helped me, but the fact that I looked after all my permissions and always made time for a chat helped too.

I have around 2000 acres, I have a few favourite spots though that I frequent the most.

The ranger said,I can shoot deer anywhere I have permission, so I do !

Ah roll on Sept 1st :D
