Can you point out a particular joke or funny part of Dumb and Dumber that is "90's comedy"?

Dumb and Dumber is funny because of the quality acting and writing, it has nothing to do with eras. If it was released today it would be just as funny.

That's my point. Of course it would. Because it was original. That style of comedy has since dried up and if another movie tried that style these days, it would flop. Just like this sequel is doing.

Haven't watched the original in about 10 years but I looked at this scene and was in tears of laughter all over again. If the sequel even gets half that reaction from me I'll be amazed.

TBH, while it was never ever going to live up to the original, it's still a really good comedy in it's own right. At times I was in fits of laughter! Definitely worth a watch imo.

Glad to hear this, i remember watching dumb & dumber on vhs in a friends house when i was about 14 and nearly wetting myself laughing..

We watched it again last night with our son who is 11 and he really enjoyed it.. it stands the test of time pretty well.. i guess like anchorman 2 it would never be able to live up to the first one.. but hopefully its worth a watch at least..

In the first movie, when I look at Carrey, all I see is Lloyd. In this one I see Carrey with a Vulcan 'do. Daniels suffers from this, too, but not to the same extent. When you have a 20 year interval in between movies, the delivery and timing of the actors is bound to change.

Absolutely horrendous. I had low expectations, but it wasn't even mildly entertaining. Awful. Nothing about it was funny.

No I'm off to forget it ever existed and perhaps re-watch the original again.

    That's simply nonsense.

Decent comedy but not a patch on the original. Did like the
    Hook, Line and Sphincter
    line though!

That was absolute rubbish, there were a few little funny moments that had a similar feel to the original but that was it.

I enjoyed it. As many here I'd low expectations but I thought there were plenty of funny bits and it was very much in the same spirit and tone as the original. Great to see Harry and Lloyd back, I thought Daniels was the funnier of the two, but that was the case for me with the original too.

Honestly, while the original is definitely one of my favourite all time comedies, there just seems to be a certain rose tinted glasses effect going on. How much we enjoyed it is a result of much more than merely the film itself but it's wrapped up with our youth and the nostalgia and so on we feel.

Case in point, I love Airplane! but I don't enjoy it as much as my brother in law who's ten years older than me and saw it when it was first released. A lot of the enjoyment I get from Airplane now is wrapped up with nostalgia I feel about watching it as a kid, just like Dumb and Dumber.

It's too hard to remove films from nostalgia and to judge them objectively. Best way is to get the opinion of a kid (or adult) seeing both the original and the sequel for the first time.

    ^ Great post :)

People understandably are judging how funny the film is against the original. I guarantee if you were to show this film to teenagers who are unaware of the first film, they would find it hilarious.

Similar with the kids around the World who grew up with the Star Wars prequels and love them accordingly. D&D is in my top three comedies of all time but yeah I accept that a big portion of that is what it meant to me when I was 13 watching it for the first time.

Let's go grab us a couple of bowls of loud mouth soup.

The original is far far superior, don't get me wrong. But I genuinely laughed out loud a good few times during the sequel. No truly memorable scenes, setpieces or quotes, but enjoyable none the less. A massive part of the greatness of the original is the interplay between, and the performances of, Carrey and Daniels. That's there even if the writing isn't so hot.

I quite enjoyed it. It was dumber compared to the first but still plenty of laughs

Light and enjoyable. The perfect FLUFF to BUILDING UP to THE BIG DAY.

    WE had a RIGHT LAUGH.

Nothing can beat them THE SNIGERING CARRY ON's though.

The acting was awful, I actually felt embarrassed as a grown adult watching this in the cinema, it was that bad. It suffered from a similar issue that the Simpsons and Friends suffered, trying too hard to be funny.

It's not terrible. But it's also not fantastic. about 1 in 5 of the jokes were funny, but some of them genuinely had me laughing out loud.

Carrey does a better job of getting back into his character than Daniels I think, but watching the two of them together again was fun.

It's a 2.5 star movie, and worth a watch on a hungover sunday afternoon.

Rob Riggle was very good in this. Very underrated comedic actor

One of the worst films i've ever seen i actually can't believe how bad it is i didn't laugh once and just couldn't wait for it to be over,i kept watching in the hope it was going to pick up but unfortunately not.

Cheap jokes and recreating scenes from the first one just didn't work its a pity because dumb & dumber is one of the funniest films ever made.

One of the few films were every few minutes I was looking at my watch. I did laugh a couple of times, but I was expecting more. Thought that the twist in it was pointless.

I actually thought this film was very funny - not a patch on the original but a very decent comedy none the less ... We watched it at home Christmas morning and we laughed out loud loads of times - even the father was laughing.

I think it's very much a film you have to watch with the lads or after a drink or two - very much like the Inbetweeners 2 IMO.

Btw the biggest downfall of this film for me was the bloody trailer they released - they gave away some of the best moments of the film - had I not known some of them were coming up they would have been absolutely hilarious and made the film.

    7/10 for me, original being a 10/10.

It's a DUMBER AND DUMBER film...

    What did anyone EXPECT?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

This was so much better than I expected given some of the comments I read here.

It's not a classic like the original, but it's a pretty funny movie and I did laugh out loud a lot more than I have done at other comedies lately.

Few misses and 'try-hard' moments in there as well, but I take the good with the bad.

Rob Riggle was brilliant! He always plays supporting roles in these films, honestly one of the best out there at the moment.

If you like the first one, at the very worstI would imagine you'll find this one tolerable.

Why does Harry have a lisp now? So distracting every time he spoke.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

You have to take the negative comments with a pinch of salt. They're not made in the spirit of nuance and half measures !

I found it really funny, loved it. Its not as good as the original and in some scenes it seemed like Carey and Daniels struggled to get into and stay in character, but for the most part they did and were a natural continuation of their younger selves.

The daydreaming sequences were as good as the original, when they each imagine a scenario in which they have to impress and win over the girl. Classic. There was the trademark Farrelly Brother casual grossness, all to the sound of a jaunty country guitar.

Its not without its flaws but they are eminently forgivable !

    Dentures? Veneers?

Not nearly as good as the first.. but i have to give thanks for all the negative comments as it really had me prepared for the worst...

Its not great, but I'd say its about average in terms of the comedy being produced these days..

When is the last time Jim Carrey has made a decent comedy? This was pure garbage.
