A fully protected species, accidentally disturbed when pulling rubbish out of the Liffey. Hopefully the brooding female was not too put out by the encounter. All returned back to the river.

Amazing video. They are SO intelligent. They way he..(she).. knows how to keep dipping the rat in the water to slowly drown it and weaken it's defences...GREAT STUFF!

my first attempt at uploading a vid to youtube went quite badly, but it was a bad video anyway taken on my ipod.
for some reason the first 10 secs went crap on the upload.

i think its a Willow Warbler. saw two today and perhaps a third.

Ah cheers! Heres the full video, its amazing what you can see if you actually stop for a minute and have a proper look, where as you'd normaly just walk by or step over these things.

Its mostly woodland plants with a quick glance of a hare.

Some of you may have noted my efforts in Dragonfly thread at creating time-lapse of the metamorphosis from larva to adult.

While it's not perfect, I got what I feel is a reasonable one this morning.
Hairy Dragonfly Brachytron pratense. It would have flown shortly after.

Still getting used to videos, my good camera isn't video-capable and I only recently got a point-and-shoot that is.
It's amazing the difference a day makes! The robin chick on the gutter was just yesterday, and today one of them was more than happy to pop into the back porch to see what scraps of mealworm he could find! Sorry for the lesser quality of the second video - the evening sun shines on that side of the house.

You're right about the bread (see my sig), but still everybody does it. I have no idea where the idea that it was what you feed them came from. I wish people would stop doing it.

that's him alright, what I note about this one is that like when they fly at sea they are low to the water, the one i see at the canal flys higher, but it's the same type of bird alright

I was fascinated watching this yesterday in Phoenix Park. After this clip she (?) swam to the little island in the centre, and eventually emerged with a brown leaf, which she then gave to a young coot. He either ate it or dropped it, but on his way back to the nest he found his own little twig and put it on the nest, while another young one started pulling lily leaves around - not very skilfully.

is it pulling the leaves out at the root? seems to dive under the water and come up holding the end of the stem.

That's what it looked like - either pulling them out at the root or biting them off. They certainly had very long stems. I'm glad I saw it last week - it was all gone when I was there today. The coots were just swimming around the lake.

We visited a bird park while on holidays in France. It was mostly waterfowl, because it was in the Marais Poitevin area and there was no shortage of water, but there were a few other birds too. Got lucky and caught these storks bill-rattling or whatever the correct term is.

Those two seemed to settle down to a mutual grooming/preening session afterwards.
