Would you believe I was just about to ask the very same question!

Blank firing replicas are permitted under direct authorisation from your local Superintendent. They do not require a license, but this authorisation must take the form of a letter or some written approval.

You will need to provide "good reason" for wanting the blank firing gun, just as you would with a real firearm.

The penalties for being caught with a blank firing gun without authorisation are as severe as though it were a real firearm.

    Doesn't matter.

AFAIK they fall under the same "sanctions" as a moderator. The dealer can legally sell them, but its up to the buyer to have the necessary licenses/authorisations to own/possess/use one.

I think you can have a dummy thrower without any letter from the super. If it is just for training the dog it might be better suited for the job as well.

The reason for having the permit/permission is not for the pistol but to allow one to buy the ammo that goes into it;).. although most gunshops if not all never ask for it but that is the legalality end of it... just purchased one on thursday night gone... am actually on the lookout for a dummy launcher too anyone know where to get one here instead of importing at a reasonable price?

Its actually for both. You get stopped with a bliank firing pistol even with no ammo and cannot produce a letter of authorisation you will get done for it.

The letter is to show any Garda that requests it that you have informed your local station that you own a blank firing pistol, and they have deemed you fit and able to own, possess, and use it. The ammo purchase is a by-product of the authorisation. Same as being able to buy ammo for a .22lr rifle because you have the firearms license. This does not mean you can have the rifle with no license because you do not intend to buy ammo for it.

Personally i would spend the money n a dummy launcher and a few cheap cartridges. The average price is what......? ....... about €80+. I can understand the want/need for one if you do not own a shotgun, but surely someone you know has one.
