    a 22lr or 17hmr would be your best caliber.
    cz make great guns in both these caliber, cheap, accurate and will last a lifetime if looked after.
    the gun its self depends on your budget.
    sportsden.ie is a good website.

    getting a lisence depends on your super i think.
    you should have no problem getting a lisence for a rimfire, you need to have a good reason to have one eg: fox/rabbit control, the only way to find out is to go ahead and apply.

    .17 HMR is a great first timer rifle. Good, accurate and strong hitting round out to 120 yds, maybe further. Little recoil, if any, cheap enough to run, etc. Here are a few choices.

    CZ .17hmr

    I wouldn't overlook the .22 WMR either, for foxes the .17HRM and .22 WMR would be the best of the three. On the cost side of things you will probably want a scope and maybe a bipod. Shoot.ie is a good website.

    i personally had a 22lr as my first rifle, brilliant rabbit gun but u really have to be shooting foxs sub 80 yards and for that reson i would recommmend the 17hmr, friend of mine has the marlin in 17hmr and i am really fond of it cracking rifle.

    just my opinion

    I also had a .22lr and it was great for rabbits. It's very cheap to run also.

    Can't comment on the .17hmr but from what I heard they are a good caliber and maybe the better option for foxes.

    i also started out with a .22 and love it. great little gun for learning how to rifle shoot;). i used mine for bunnies though, so if you intend to shoot foxes aswell as bunnies ild go for the .17. best of luck anyway

    Personally I'd go for something bigger than a .22lr, theyre really only any good for rabbits/crowes! Depends really if you will be using it more for foxes and If your FO is sound enough i'd go for a .223, if it's more for rabbits go for the .17hmr, ive only ever seen it used on rabbits but heard it's good on foxes at reasonable ranges aswel!

    But for your first rifle you would want something cheap to run and to learn the basics.

    .22lr = ~€5 for 50
    .17hmr = ~€16 for 50
    .223 = €15-€26 for 20

    i'd say your looking at one of the rimfire magnum's
    .17hmr or .22wmr

    both good for foxes at 100-120 yards and if your new to shooting i dont think you'll be going for shots much longer than that till you take the time to get your confidence up.
    the bullet prices are also cheaper too than a center fire

    in and around a euro a shot for a rabbit with a .223 is pretty expensive when you're getting started if money is an issue
