Our number 1 is approaching 40 though. We’ve had numerous McKenna Cup games and dead rubber League games in Mickey’s tenure but you wouldn’t see it as irresponsible to not have given any playing time to another ‘keeper?

To flip it, would you feel it necessary for Ray Galligan to have played every minute of every game under Mickey?

  • Registered Users Posts: 347 ✭✭mylestheslasher

I wouldn't agree. The day that Ray gets injured and the sub goalie has to come on will surely come and our sub goalie has had no game preparation. Not saying he should play tomorrow but he should have played every game in the McKenna cup and those 2 league games at the end which were dead rubbers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 610 ✭✭✭KeepTheFaith

Dropping our keeper and captain for the last two league games would mean he wouldn't have played a competitive match for a month before the Armagh game.

Does that seem like a good idea?

Edit: forgot about league final. Regardless, it's hand wringing over nothing. He's been there since 2015 and hasn't got injured. Our Keeper will likely be a senior championship player for a top club in Cavan. Its a specialised position.

If Ray retires or gets injured it will be a huge blow that won't be softened by our sub keeper having made a few McKenna cup and dead rubber league appearances

Cluxton came back into the Dublin panel this having not played since 2020 . He didn't go straight back into the team. O Hanlon was in nets for the League final and championship game against Laois. Then they brought Cluxton in for the Kildare game.

They have a good understudy if Cluxton does get injured as O Hanlon was good in the League. Evan Comferford a good keeper also, currently injured.

Cavan have a lot more pressing problems than not having a sub goaly with a bit of playing experience.

In fact the way it’s gone now an outfield player could well be the next goaly/quarterback when raymondo retires.

Doesn’t seem like a good idea to me that we’ve no player has even kicked a ball out competitively to a Cavan team mate if something does happen the main keeper.

I honestly don’t understand why a sub keeper would even continue to train or accept a call up to the panel.

It’s a matter of respect for their effort to give someone the odd minute of play in some competition.

Also, you say our keeper will likely be a “senior championship player for a top club in Cavan” - one of the two other keepers plays for intermediate Ballyhaise. The other plays for a club with no other player from it on the senior panel.

You really do take your username on here quite literally when it comes to the prophet Mickey.

I’m waiting now on the standard response when you’re caught out that this is too long to reply to. Stick to Twitter and 160 characters so!

    "Caught out" Hmmm...

On the eve of a championship game you're ranting about Graham not having minutes in a substitute keeper. A concern so far down the list of concerns it doesn't register.

Your posts recently are filled with poorly veiled and unveiled digs at the Cavan manager. It's fairly pathetic stuff taking cheap shots at the man from behind the safety of online anonymity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Incorrect. I was “ranting” about us going through a Division 3 and 4 campaign where he hasn’t experimented enough considering the poor opposition we faced and the opportunity to give new players more minutes. It’s a point I brought up here numerous times before and the second keeper not getting any minutes whatsoever is a prime example of it.

Mickey Graham is too risk averse to bring this team forward unfortunately. Some people blame Ricey or Burke but at the end of the day the buck stops with the top man.

All of us on here are anonymous and make comment. It’s an online message board. If you take issue with it, why are you here?

I don’t think we will steamroller them but I think we will win. Offaly are no great shakes.

Hard to know what to take from that. Still very sloppy, lots of errors but almost completely dominant. We bullied Offaly up and down the pitch.

Oisin Brady looked like he got a bad facial injury in that red card incident.

Overall i felt there was a more impetus about Cavan and we really imposed our pace and power today.

Home QF in 2 weeks and all going well a couple of games in Breffni to wrap up the season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,129 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

We have to take the positives out of that... Huge score and a lot more urgency bringing the ball Forward, yes we leaked a couple of goals and gave up a few chances but have to be happy with that performance

Hopefully we get a favourable quarter final draw

Down and meath looked like no world beaters

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

I’m taking credit for this performance with a world class reverse hex!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

Can only play what is in front of us, and that’s easily our best performance since the Down game in Breffni. Boylan’s movement was brilliant and for once (shock! Horror!) ball was kicked in early. He must have set up three points by winning the ball out in front and laying it off for others to score. Two nice goals too.

lovely to see McGovern back and taking a nice score. Holla played well before being subbed and that’s probably Conor Brady’s best performer for Cavan this year.

McVeety back as well, and a nice cameo from Hoffman.

  • Registered Users Posts: 610 ✭✭✭KeepTheFaith

The amount of errors in us is worrying. Cian Reilly twice. Moynagh twice. Gearoid from an easy free. They kept Offaly in the game for a long time.

But the hard ground suits us and our tackling and defensive structure in the first half was excellent. I thought Oisin Kiernan was excellent and as you say Conor Brady had a big game. Faulkner was excellent too.

I thought Hoffman really put himself in line for a place when he came on. McGovern kicked a classy score, he got a great reception which was well deserved.

    How does the draw work?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

Cian Reilly badly caught out twice under a high ball and also lost his man for the chance that hit the post. He’s got a lot of potential and made some nice turnovers but needs to cut that out. The second goal was a farce- either Faulkner didn’t call or Moynagh didn’t listen.

but the way we played was the best in ages. Real attacking intent and at pace.

the fact that 2-25 was scored and we left about 6 scores alone behind us in the first half is way more encouraging than what we’ve recently managed.

let’s hope this is a real sign that we can and will up the pace to win this.

and yes Oisin Kiernan was class as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

In fairness, while the performance was greatly improved, us or Offaly didn’t look like world beaters either.

Plenty of errors in both teams but we moved the ball with alot more impetus today which is exactly what is needed.

Offaly are at the start of their development and it showed. They were bullied all over the pitch and spent their time then fighting with the referee, each other and then us. The end of the game was like a training match.

Brandon Boylan was excellent. Padraig Faulkner also. A pity to see Niall Carolan go off but with speed unfortunately also comes bad hamstrings.

Not sure about Cian Reilly. He looked small. Can we afford a backline which would allow so many mismatches with him & Carolan in it? He badly judged the flight of the ball twice and was lucky it only ended in a goal once and not twice.

Showed how unprofessional Offaly were I thought that the keeper came over in the middle of the game to the stand and asked spectators for the score of the Laois game!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

The teams that finish second and third play each other next week and then we play one at home the following week. We therefore can’t get other group winners in the QF like Meath or Limerick.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

Cavan fan reactions after a game:

Cavan lose. Opposition were hopeless, we are worse.

Cavan win: opposition were hopeless, anyone would beat that shower and a good team will beat us.

I’ve never heard a harder to please shower. How could anyone not be happy with today. Sun was out, we played direct football, kicked some great scores.

Not saying it was flawless (it wasn’t) but even with lots more to do, easier to leave Longford with a smile on your face as opposed to trudging out of Ruislip or the last two days in Breffni.

  • Registered Users Posts: 995 ✭✭✭Hammar

It wasn't flawless by any means ,but a vastly improved performance. Some great football played. Some bad mistakes made, we should have conceded no more than 7/8 points today.

The quick transition from defence to attack was outstanding, something we've been lacking for a while. Some real good direct kick passing.

Some terrific performances,Faulkner,Oisin Kiernan, Conor Brady( best player on pitch by a country mile in my opinion)Clarke,Gearoid.

Brandon Boylan and Oisin Brady had very good games too.

Paddy Lynch kicked some great scores, made a few mistakes also, The Offaly backs did nothing but try and antagonize him after he got the yellow card and especially after Paddy went to back up Oisin Brady when Offaly decided the game had turned into a boxing match.

Very impressed with Paddys discipline that he didn't react.

Offaly are the whingiest, most illdisciplined intercounty team Ive seen in a long time. The act that Oisin Brady had his nose busted with blood everywhere was disgraceful...

I loved how Cavan punished them dearly on the scoreboard after their behaviour. It's a shame Laois didn't finish ahead of them in the group.

Also delighted to see Conor Moynagh returning to 2019 form, he was involved in the mix up with Faulkner for the goal but I thought he was very good other than that.

Niall Carolan going off injured is the one sour note. Cian Reilly made some mistakes, but he also made some very important interceptions and recovered well overall from the two high ball misjudgements.

I'm alot more optimistic after today, but still lots to work on.

Are you attempting to create some narrative here quoting my post and talking about supporters being unhappy & hard to please?

For the positives, I described the performance as “greatly improved”, said that we “‘moved the ball with alot more impetus which is exactly what was needed”, said that Offaly were “bullied all over the pitch” and described two players in particular as “excellent”. I also mentioned us effectively reducing another inter county team to infighting and making the end of the game look like a training match we were that comfortable.

I spoke about errors and Offaly being poor, which other posters have already stated, so what is the crux of your point here quoting me exactly - who said I didn’t walk out of Pearse Park with a “smile on my face”?

I think we’re guaranteed a home QF in two weeks, it could be a double header with Armagh and Galway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I hope to god they just leave us as a single fixture on our own. If anything, a double fixture puts people off because of traffic.

We now get a home QF and we can’t draw another group winner so Meath & Limerick we definitely won’t be playing, and most likely Fermanagh who should top their group today.

Down will be the tough draw now for any of the group winners. I’m not sure what happens re the fact that they & Meath have already played. I’d imagine it’s just an open draw once the games are played next weekend to reduce it to 8.

The semi finals certainly look like they will be 4 teams from Div 2 & upper Div 3 rather than last year where you had the likes of Div 4 Sligo in it.

There may be a few surprises yet though. Not many would have called that Meath win yesterday.

Down have to play a preliminary game against a third place team or New York, so no guarantee that they will be in the last 8. There will be no repeat pairings in the Quarter Finals.

Quarter-Finals 17-18.06.2023 (Sat/Sun) (Four Games) The four first-place teams from Round 1 shall be drawn to play at home against the four Preliminary Quarter-Finals winners. Subject to avoidance of repeat pairings from Round 1 (Group Stage).

Semi-Finals 25.06.2023 (Sun) (Two Games) The four quarter-final winners shall play against each other in the Semi-Final based on a draw, subject to avoidance of repeat pairings from the championship, where possible.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I would be expecting the last four to come from Cavan, Meath, Down, Limerick & Fermanagh. There’s a noticeable drop off in quality after those teams.

  • Registered Users Posts: 995 ✭✭✭Hammar

Lads, be honest now and own up,

Which of yas were winding up the Offaly half back in the second half beside the Cavan dug out which had him roaring into the terrace😂

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I was over in the stand watching their keeper start shouting over for the score of the Laois game. Then, when nobody paid him any attention, he ran over towards the stand and got some randomers to check and tell him it was a draw!

The umpires on the end Cavan were shooting into second half were brutal. The linesman got them to correct one blunder but another one of Gearoid’s points was clearly wide. Most people around me were amazed they even thought about giving it let alone it being given and allowed.

If my suspicions are right then it will be Cavan v Down. The GAA would want a good crowd and know how to get one.
