what is it with chef's and the overuse of salt??? got a lovely piece of monkfish recently - was an unreal recipe in theory - but it was poisoned with salt!!! I mean, thats just criminal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,663 ✭✭✭Milly33

I know it bugs the crap out of me.. I think it should be up to the person/customer to add the salt to the dish not the chef...
we went to jacks coastguard place that was recommended for seafood and they had the seafood ruined with salt

Oh I did don't worry but they didn't really think too much of it, it wasn't that bad that I couldn't eat it, but it would put me off.. we got free chips for saying it

No offense, but you must have some strange palate if you think there's a large difference between Chilli Padi and Ramen.

I think the difference is huge. Imo Ramen is very poor, I've tried it about 4 times and only once was the food ok. Chilli Padi is far superior and as a real bonus (or maybe not) it's very close to where I work. I tried Box Noodle yesterday and I was very disappointed. 4 of us had mains and 3 of us didn't like it. I will give it another try though as its a bit unfair to just write it off after one visit especially in the early days. Staff there are really nice.

I had the Singapore Noodles from Chilli Padi on Friday night. Far superior to what I had from Ramen.

Any other new Asian Street food places?

There's a new one on Barrack Street called ..... wait for it ..... ASIAN STREET FOOD. It used to be a Chinese called China Kitchen or something. I think the owners just took down the sign, tippexed it out and wrote a new name on it.

Anyway, a couple of friends went there recently and said it was great. These two guys have spent years in Japan & Korea.

Had their lunch special the other day and thought it was phenomenal

€8 for a big portion of massaman curry, a can of coke and an ice cream cone is hard to beat - particularly when the curry was as good as it was - plenty of chicken, potato & nuts in it, will definitely be going back!

Huge difference I'm afraid! Ramen is actually greasy and tasteless, while Chili Padi is fresh and tasty.

Ramen has somehow become popular though. In the same way as KCs, Ecos, Il Padrino, coqbull and other such Cork institutions (with crap food)!

Ah jaysus, you can't put Kc's in with that other lot!

I've noticed the 6 before 6 they do in Ramen is nearly alway padtaoi (spelling?)- cheapest of the cheap dish- basically rice with peas and very little sauce. Don't get me started on the lack of chicken they put in the dishes. Personally think it's a gimmick and after 6pm the meal is €10.95!! Chilli pad far superior IMO

You know the 6 before 6 is a different dish Monday - Friday daily? maybe you're just returning on the same day of the week

Or that Pad Thai doesn't have rice or peas in it... But here don't let that anything grounded in reality get in the way of having a pop at Ramen. It's what all the cool kids do these days.

Certainly there isn't 5 different dishes in ballincollig Monday to Friday and I can say that with certainty :-) the food isn't worth the price. I have no problem paying for quality and enough to fill me- a box of badly flavoured rice and a few peas! No thanks :-)

I can say for a certainty there is! It's Thai Green on Friday, Yaki Soba Wednesday in ballincollig, not sure on the rest.

Gonna jump to the defense of Ramen here. I love the place. Inexpensive, tasty food and has a nice, casual, friendly atmosphere about it.

Their online order system is a disaster though. Twice I've had orders messed up because of how their system works (tells the customer one thing, the kitchen does another and there's no communication in between).

I've never been to Chilli Padi so I can't compare the two but I'll defo make an effort to try it with the good reviews here.

Just back from marcello's in Douglas.. Love what they have done with the place and the staff are loverly... Food was great but they really need to work on speed.. We were about to walk out while waiting to get the order taken, the loverly lady came along sorted that one.. We got the started in good time bit of a wait with the main but ok. Then we got the desert menu and waited and waited and waited. There is one young waiter in there who just isn't doing much for the place, we ended up leaving just heading to pay the bill..

would go back in there but I wouldn't be in a rush for food

Finally tried White Rabbit on MacCurtain Street this week - couldn't recommend it enough

Great look and feel to the place, fantastic music playing - Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye etc. and the food was fantastic.

Presentation was very simplistic, you're getting simple dishes at good prices but I must say I thought the potato salad was amazing and the pork belly was top notch.

Will definitely be going back and would highly recommend if you haven't tried already. Great to see a place like this open in Cork - with this & Ramen - simple eating seems to be on the up in the city and long may it continue!

Would that be Ribbonwood Sauvignon Blanc perhaps? If so, that's a great wine

Went there myself over the bank holiday weekend, only for a drink mind, but I really liked it! The music was good - rockabilly stuff. Looking forward to trying the food. Location is not the best though in my opinion - would be better it it was nearer the centre - like Oliver plunkett street or something.

oh come one - this is so typical of cork - places like barrack st and mccurtain st have massive potential - people need to sprawl - there is more to cork that OP st and pana and the french quarter
