    From where? :)

It's on Proby's Quay, on the right hand side, just opposite Finbarr's Cathedral.

Do I go down by Durys and take a left?

Um, where's your starting point? Do you mean the old Jury's hotel?

Used to be called The Brick Oven, or Proby's Bistro if you go way back!

Hey, looking for a recommendation please, early bird on Friday for 4 or 6 people, BYOB preferable but not a deal breaker if not. Cuisine isn't too much of an issue either. Had heard of Strasbourg Goose, any thoughts on it?
    Malari wrote: »
I wasn't that impressed by the Goose. Service wasn't great, food was disappointing and we were seated on the mezzanine floor, which was a bit cramped.

How about Fenn's Quay? They do a 2 course and 3 course early bird before 7.30pm. Not sure if its BYO though.

Had a great trip to Cork and went to Fenn's Quay, great food altogether, very good value, very happy with being able to substitute desert for a glass of house wine or local craft beer.

Thanks very much for the recommendation

Having talked about the meal I'm now craving the starter I had again, poached egg on colcannon, black pudding and hollandaise sauce, absolutely delicious!

I heartily agree about the meh-ness of the food. I swear last time I heard the micro ding just before I got my burrito. :(

I've been to Cafe Mexicana three times. It's absolutely awful food. I honestly think it's one of the worst restaurants in the city. And I have definitely heard a "ding" right before I got my soggy, lukewarm food.

I agree about Cafe Mexicana - years ago I thought it was good but over the last 4/5 years it's just awful - I never feel like I've had a good meal when I come out of there - it needs some competition to give it a kick up the proverbial!

With all this fine weather we are having is there any restaurants around the city with some good outdoor seating available?

Electric (although I don't know if you can sit outside for the restaurant), Cornstore, Amicus, Harvey's, Café Bar Deli, 14A, SoHo... That's what I can think of off the top of my head anyway.

The problem with sitting outside in the city is that you invariably get constantly harassed by winos and junkies and beggars looking for something, IME.

I stayed in the Indigo apartments and it looked like they had a nice outdoor area at the back of the restaurant overlooking the river that you wont' get harassed in. No idea of what the food is like there though.

Just had a look at the menu - looks pretty nice! I always wondered what that place was like actually, had forgotten about it :)Have you eaten in the restaurant? edit: sorry just saw you said you didn't know what the food was like!

House café @ The Opera House have tables outside and has very good food.
Saw a party of about 12 seated at a big table outside last week - looked great.

Sat outside the Cornstore in the end, got a great Sirloin Steak with Shrimp.

One of the best I've had in a while, about 24 euro with the Shrimp, Mushrooms, Tomatoes and Chips. Fantastic

I know it's outside the city, but I had a lovely meal in Cronin's in Crosshaven yesterday. We sat outside too, and it was just gorgeous. We only had a light lunch and shared dessert, but looking around at what others were eating, I was desperately wishing funds would stretch far enough to have a full meal. I'll definitely go back there again, and I highly recommend it.

Great family run pub, nice folk and good beer selection too.
There is nothing to not like about Cronin's.

what about the fact that their bar food menu is insanely overpriced?

In fairness, it's not like you don't know the price when you order it - if it's pricey then don't order it.

Does House cafe operate with table service like a restaurant in the evenings, or is it a carry-your-tray type thing?

They only open in the evenings on show nights.
You kinda need to find out the start time for the show and aim for around then as before that can be a bit chaotic with people sitting around waiting for the show. Or go early.
    Full table service.

Appreciate what you're tryin to do Faith, but why even bother to reinvent places that do this well, like Tripadvisor. Someone posting a recommendation here could be a half wit, only allowed out at weekends, whose culinary expertise ranges from sucking meals through a straw while in restraints, to an occasional McD's 'Happy' Meal.

Agreed! Trip Advisor is more relevant and you can easily sort through the plainly biased reviewers and 'head-the-balls'. Use it all the time myself and saves a great deal of disapointment and angst.

Who says you can't use both? And besides, not everything one might be looking for can be filtered for, such as a place that has outdoors seating in these glorious days. :)

Did you spend 2 1/2 years deciding whether or not you agreed with the poster you quoted or did you just have to scroll back that far to find someone you agreed with?

    I like the personal touch here AND Boards.ie don't clog up my inbox with;
    "10 best hotels"
    "10 best beaches"
    "10 best pools"
    "10 best restaurants"
    "10 best sunsets"
    "10 best airlines"
    "10 best airports"
    "10 best taxis"
    "10 best travel tips"
    "10 most INANE ****ING EMAILS"

I used to use Trip Advisor but I can no longer hack the constant emails.

I had lunch today in Gallo & Galetti with the family. It was really excellent. I had pan-fried seabass with citrus to start followed by a spicy creamy Penne all'arrabbiata (gluten-free pasta available for €1.50 extra). There wasn't a single complaint around the table.

Wasn't that place closed for a while due to alcohol smuggling or something of the sort?

It's only open a few weeks, it's brand new, run by the people who used to have augustines I think. Maybe you are confusing it with someplace else.

Blue ginger was in that spot before.
