IN Taekwondo, the final qualification tournament is happening this weekend in Kazan. 3 Irish are going for the final 3 spots in each weight category. Bobby Enright (80kgs) is ranked 11th, Sonya McConnell (57kg) is ranked 15th.

Jenny Hurley is ranked 11th and has already beaten the 15th ranked Swedish girl. The quarter finals are on now, and the top seed has just been beaten by the 16th seed

You can see live scoring here; http://www.tpss.nl/LiveResults.asp and the ranks here; http://library.constantcontact.com/download/get/file/1103540043178-122/EQT+athletes+list+with+ranking_V2.pdf

The final day of fleet racing at the Miami World Cup of Sailing has seen more decent performances from the Irish crews.
In the men's keelboat star, Peter O'Leary and David Burrows put in two superb performances to finish 2nd and 3rd in today's races to qualify for tomorrow's medal race and are in 6th place overall.
Annalise Murphy had another race win in race 10, following up her 8th place finish in race 9. She now moves up to 7th place overall and like the Star duo, she too qualifies for tomorrow's medal showdown.
James Espey had a better day today finishing in 26th and 20th in his two races to finish the competition in 24th place overall. An encouraging performance from the 21-year old Laser sailor.
The medal races get underway tomorrow. Best of luck to the Irish crews.

In taekwondo news, at the European qualification tournament for the Olympics in Kazan, Russia Irish athlete Sonya McConnell has missed out on the chance to secure an Olympic berth as she was beaten in the preliminary round of the -57kg category, losing 9-2 to her opponent from Azerbaijan.
Ireland's last chance for Olympic qualification in taekwondo will come tomorrow when Bobby Enright takes part in the 80kg category. Best of luck to him.

At the sailing world cup in Miami, Annalise Murphy had a very disappointing finish to her competition, finishing 10th out of 10 boats in today's medal race. This result dropped Annalise back to 9th place overall and she will probably be disappointed with this result. Neverthless, it is more experience banked away which will no doubt be useful to draw on come the Olympics.
Better news for the Star duo, Peter O'Leary and David Burrows who finished the regatta in 5th place overall after a solid 4th place in today's medal race.
Overall this has been an encouraging regatta for the Irish crews, all performed to a high level at a top quality event and maintains the contention that our sailors have what it takes to win a medal in London.

    Men's Star - Peter O'Leary/David Burrows 5th
    Women's Laser Radial - Annalise Murphy 9th
    Men's Laser - James Espey 24th

In South Africa, the Irish women's hockey team suffered a 1-0 defeat to their hosts in their third preparation match and second match against South Africa. They won the first game 2-1 before losing 1-0 to the Belgians.

The national boxing stadium is the place to be next Friday as the hunt for Olympic qualification enters a crucial stage. Michael Conlan (Fly), John Joe Nevin (Bantam) and Darren O'Neill (Middle) have all secured their spots in London, however there are opportunities in each of the other Olympic categories to claim a place at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Trabzon, Turkey (April 13-22). There are some mouth-watering clashes on the cards on Friday, in particular that men's light-heavy division where there is the meeting of Kenneth Egan (Olympic silver medallist) against young Joe Ward (European champion and current national champion). Michael McDonagh v David Oliver Joyce should be a humdinger also. Really looking forward to the bouts. Promises to be a mammoth encounter. All kicks off 7:30pm Friday, 3rd February.

48Kg: Light-flyweight Lynne McEnery (St Paul's) v Oliwia Samsanov (Cavan)
49Kg: Light-flyweight Paddy Barnes (Holy Family) v Hugh Myres (Ryston)
52Kg: Flyweight Michael Conlan (St John Bosco) v Chris Phelan (Ryston)
56Kg: Bantamweight John Joe Nevin (Cavan) v Michael Nevin (Portlaoise)
57Kg: Featherweight Michaela Walsh (Holy Family) v Dervla Duffy (Ryston)
60Kg: Lightweight Michael McDonagh (St Marys) v David Oliver Joyce (St Michael's Athy)
64Kg: Light-welterweight Ross Hickey (Grangecon) v Stephen Coughlan (Bray)
69Kg: Welterweight Adam Nolan (Bray) v John Joe Joyce (St Michael's Athy)
75Kg: Middleweight Darren O'Neill (Paulstown) v Conor Coyle (St Josephs)
81Kg: Light-heavyweight Joe Ward (Moate) v Ken Egan (Neilstown)
91Kg: Heavyweight Tommy McCarthy (Oliver Plunkett) v Christy Joyce (St Michael's Athy)
91+Kg: Super-heavyweight Con Sheehan (Clonmel) v Sean Turner (Drimnagh)

Irish judoka Lisa Kearney has taken another step towards Olympic qualification after a 5th place finish at the World Cup event in Bulgaria.

Lisa Kearney will take part in the French Grand Slam event on Saturday 4th February in pursuit of vital qualification points for the Olympics as she seeks to secure her spot in the -48kg judo for London. It will be a hard task for Kearney to win points at this event as it is generally a higher standard than the World Cup events in which she performs reasonably well. It will be good to see her test her skills against the world's best as it's the ideal way to push on to the next level. Best of luck to her.

What a fight, Ward takes the title 29-10 and advances to the Olympic qualifiers. Immensely proud to be Irish after watching that, I've huge respect for Kenny Egan, and his response to defeat was very refreshing, spoke with humility and dignity. Joe Ward is some boxer, such an exciting prospect. Can't remember Egan ever getting beaten by such a big scoreline, and to do it in such an important fight bodes well for Ward's Olympic chances.

The hockey teams will take part in an Olympic qualifying tournament in the spring with the winners of the tournament securing their spot in London.

The men's team will have home advantage and will be in with a good shout based on their current form and continuing improvement. The qualifying tournament for the men will take place 10th-18th March and Ireland will take on South Korea, Russia, Malaysia, Chile and Ukraine. As I said, they need to win the tournament to qualify as there is no second chance. The teams play in a round-robin group and the top 2 teams will play-off in a winner-takes-all showdown.

It's a similar story for the women's hockey team but they must travel to Belgium (17th-25th March). They will come up against hosts Belgium, Spain, Russia, France and Mexico. The women have a good shout of making the Olympics also but will need to get past teams such as Belgium which they have found hard to beat just recently. Spain will be a challenge also. Nevertheless, there is little between the teams and Ireland have as good a chance as any.

As for Irish Olympic qualifiers, Dodge provided us with an up-to-date list a few pages back. I've copied and pasted his post here for your convenience. Expect many more qualifiers in the coming weeks and months (we should have between 50 and 60 competitors in London).

Barring any unfortunate injuries we now know the Irish boxers who will head off to Trabzon, Turkey to the final Olympic qualifier (April 13th-22nd):

49kg: Light Flyweight Paddy Barnes 4 places available (needs to reach the semi-finals)
60kg: Lightweight Michael McDonagh 4 places available (needs to reach the semi-finals)
64kg: Light Welterweight Ross Hickey 1 place available (needs to win the tournament)
69kg: Welterweight Adam Nolan 2 places available (needs to reach the final)
81kg: Light-Heavyweight Joe Ward 3 places available (needs to reach the final to guarantee qualification or reach the semi-finals, having lost to the eventual winner of the tournament)
91kg: Heavyweight Tommy McCarthy 1 place available (needs to win the tournament)
+91kg: Super-Heavyweight Con Sheehan 2 places available (needs to reach the final)

One would like to assume that both Paddy Barnes and Joe Ward could qualify there. If we got that, plus perhaps another surprise addition, we could have 6/7 boxers (Katie Taylor inclusive) in the Olympics and could out-do the Beijing performance

The Irish men's hockey team secured a solid 1-1 draw with hosts Spain in a warm-up match in Valencia today. Spain are amongst the strongest teams in the sport so to draw away from home against the Spanish is a great achievement.

@IrishOlympians' "Athletes of the day" are the Irish target shooters:
Athletes of the day = The Irish @intershootnl shoot team with their bronze medals. COME ON IRELAND twitpic.com/8gh1k5

    191592.JPG

The two chaps at the front of the Irish team there are Ray Kane and Paul O'Boyle, both of whom will be going forward to the European Championships in a week to compete for a quota place to go to London 2012. Five places are up for grabs in Men's Air Rifle, and with their PBs at 590 and 589 respectively, both have a very real chance of winning a quota place for Ireland in shooting, something that's not been done in rifle shooting in over a century.

Also going will be Ashling Miller competing in Womens Air Rifle (which also has five quota places up for grabs) and Peter Friend competing in Mens Air Pistol (again, five quota places up for grabs).

Not bad for a group of athletes who can only train in their free time, have to hold down full-time jobs and pay for absolutely everything from their own pocket because the Irish Sports Council won't even recognise their National Governing Body (it's the only Olympic sport in the country that the ISC doesn't recognise). Especially when you notice that every other shooter on that podium is a fully-funded, fully supported athlete in a full-time training programme, and that they're all ten years younger than our team because our team isn't legally allowed to start training until ten years after their international competitors start training. And even with all that, there were 20 points between us and the GB team out of 1800 points in total (a 1% difference).

It would be impressive if any of our shooters can go on to secure a quota spot for the Olympics given the restraints that Sparks mentions. Would be great for the sport in this country so best of luck to them all in the coming weeks and months.

Looks even more likely now that Ireland will go on to secure two individual spots for the Olympic showjumping programme in London. Billy Twomey has swapped places with Denis Lynch and is now in first place in the Olympic rankings. Lynch is in second place and should consolidate this placing when the next rankings are released after a solid 4th place at the World Cup event in Bordeaux.
The top 3 in the Olympic rankings will be assured of qualification for the Olympics, however, the top 5 may well qualify as Britain will not need to avail of their 2 quota spots as host nation (because they have qualified a team). It appears that these 2 unused quota places will be re-distributed amongst the Olympic rankings which will further boost the chances for the Irish riders of securing a maximum of 2 individual riders.

And some favorable press on the Intershoot trip from TheScore.ie (the sports section of TheJournal.ie):
On target: Irish shooters achieve success against all odds.
    ray-kane-390x285.jpg
Ray Kane on his way to 6th place in the men's air-rifle

INTERSHOOT IS AN annual event in The Hague, ideal for Olympic preparation and Ireland’s shooting team came away with a success which belies their paltry resources.

The team claimed two new Irish records and five out of the six managed to better the minimum qualifying score for the Olympics.

One of those records was Ray Kane’s rifle score of 590 out of 600. It earned him a sixth place finish, but the five who led him were all full-time shooters, given full funding and resources to back them during their exploits.

The Irish are all part-timers, struggling to force together the means for needed to compete at an elite international level.

The group must take the time to travel across Europe for tournaments (never mind training and practice) out of their spare time and holiday allowances from their regular day-job.

Looking on longingly at the resources afforded to other national squads is Mark Dennehy. Dennehy arrived back from the Netherlands reporting of how the host nation owned their own dedicated transport for shooters and equipment. Or how the English team crossed the channel with the largest contingent, full time coaches and staff bulking up their entourage beyond Ireland’s wildest dreams.

Dennehy and his team, meanwhile, are left to simply let their pistols and rifles do the talking.

Their coach, Matt Fox, had to remain in Ireland due to travel costs. Indeed, only one non-shooter travelled with the team as staff to cover the mounds of paperwork and logistics duty associated with transporting firearms.
    shoot-630x473.jpg
Irish mens air-rifle team celebrate bronze at Intershoot - Ray Kane on left, Paul O’Boyle on right, Mark Dennehy in back row)

Essential activities such as cooking duties are taken up by the competitors themselves, negating much needed rest time. To properly underline the added strain of this activity, Dennehy rhetorically asks:

“Do you know how much seven adults working 12-hour days in subzero temperatures at a rifle match can eat, and still lose weight?”

The answer is a lot, but despite the uphill struggle, Ireland still managed to get within a whisker of their heavily backed rivals. Dennehy amongst those coming away with a bronze medal in the men’s air-rifle competition. The Netherlands were only 20 points better off and, silver-medallists, England just 12.

That gap, Dennehy says, could be closed with just a minor boost in funding. Currently the income is a nominal fee from the Olympic Council of ireland – not enough to cover one, never mind seven competitors – and nothing from the Irish Sports Council. That state of affairs has left Dennehy with the peculiar emotional mix of anger and pride as his cohorts keep trudging on despite it all.

“There’s a part of me that wonders” Says Dennehy,” in only our free time outside of our full-time jobs, we’re close enough to full-time fully-funded Olympic teams. That gap could be closed with just money, and not that much money at that.”

“And that part of me is desperately proud of what us little Irish shooters can manage to do.”

Paying out of their own pocket to represent Ireland on an international stage inevitably leads to talk of this summer’s Olympic games.

There are plenty of hurdles to overcome before that becomes a prescient matter. Next week they travel to Finland for the European Championships and, in April, they will get to test their skills on the Olympic range at the World Cup in London, before hopefully returning for the big show in August.

As things currently stand, that is just a foolhardy dream. An aspiration that is making them haemorrhage money every time they do Ireland proud.

Yet they have no intention of doing anything else.

It's always good to see an Irish squad step up onto the podium, even better when you realise that they utterly defy the odds to produce such a fantastic result. The shooters are doing the country proud, typical battling display from the Irish, overcoming the hurdles (significant hurdles in this case) to fly the flag on the international stage. It's time the sports council repay these competitors by showing that they too are willing to fly the flag for the good of Irish sport. It's stories such as this and those like gymnast Kieran Behan that makes me proud to be Irish. If any of these guys even make it to the Olympics it would bring me as much satisfaction as seeing an Irish Olympic medal. Hats off to the team, here's hoping for more success and a bit of luck in the times ahead.

So just 170 days to go until the opening ceremony kicks off in London and in the run-up to the Olympics I will post some random pieces of information about team Ireland. As it stands, Ireland has secured 29 Olympic berths for the Games, although we only have an idea who 25 of those athletes are (as we do not yet know who will represent us in the cycling). Just for a bit of fun and personal amusement, I have made a table outlining which counties are represented amongst our qualifiers. Unsurprisingly, Dublin is leading the way so far with 7 qualified athletes, swiftly followed by Cork with 5 currently. So, how is your county doing? Are they represented yet? Are they likely to be represented on the big stage in London this year? We will be able to update this information as the year progresses. Let me know if you spot any errors.

    County|Number of athletes qualified|Details|
    Dublin|7|Linda Byrne, Ava Hutchinson,Deirdre Ryan,Mark Kenneally,Barry Murphy,Annalise Murphy,David Burrows
    Cork|5|Derval O'Rourke,Olive Loughnane,Robert Heffernan,Ciaran O'Lionaid,Peter O'Leary
    Antrim|2|Ryan Seaton,Michael Conlan
    Wicklow|2|Fionnuala Britton,Stephanie Reilly
    Derry|1|Aileen Morrison
    Donegal|1|Brendan Boyce
    Down|1|Matt McGovern
    Galway|1|Paul Hession
    Kilkenny|1|Darren O'Neill
    Westmeath|1|John Joe Nevin
    Wexford|1|Grainne Murphy
Other/Abroad|2|Alistair Cragg (South Africa), Kieran Behan (England)

    Additional Info:
    • So far the team is made up of 19 men and 10 women.
    • Qualifiers by province: Leinster (12), Munster (5), Ulster (5), Connacht (1)
    • Kieran Behan (gymnastics qualifier) although born in London, England has Irish parents: mother is from Monaghan and father from Dublin.
    • So far, just as many Corkmen as Dublin men have qualified (3 a-piece).
    • 4 qualifiers were born in Northern Ireland, with Aileen Morrison the only female so far on the team from the 6-counties.
    • Perhaps unsurprisingly, Murphy is the most common surname, with 3 Murphys on the team.
    • Olive Loughnane is the oldest member of the team at 36 years age with the youngest being Grainne Murphy who will turn 19 in March.
    • The average age of our women when the Olympics get underway is 28.2yrs and 27.3yrs for the men. Overall the average is 27.7yrs for our Olympians.
    • 16 of the qualifiers will be first-time Olympians in London; 4 qualifiers are returning for a second time having previously competed in Beijing in 2008; 2 qualifiers (Derval O'Rourke and Alistair Cragg) will be appearing in their 3rd consecutive Olympic Games; and a trio of Olympic veterans will be returning to the Olympic stage to make a 4th appearance, namely Robert Heffernan and Olive Loughnane who will travel to their 4th consecutive Olympics and David Burrows, who made his Olympic debut way back in Atlanta in 1996 (missed out on Beijing).

No Mayos this time around :(. I suppose our best hopes would have been Ray Moylette and David O'Loughlin, but Moylettes injury has finished him and I don't think O'Loughlin is in contention this time around.
