Give John Kavanagh in Fingal Sports a shout. He has the PRVI stuff, which plenty people seem happy with. Think he said that was about €14 a box. If you want anything specific though, he's always been good to me about going looking for it, and always comes back with the best price I can find, so well worth a shout.

Less than 80c, more like 60c per shot for a .243, after the initial startup costs, which would be a few hundred.

I'm using PRVI 130gr in my .270. Grouping well although I noticed the odd 'hot' round. My first batch cost £10 per box and I bought the dealer out of them. I think the next batch is gonna cost £12 a box.

I haven't done any extensive testing on targets. They hit what I aim at and are Very effective. :)

so anybody got a heads up on the reloading issue?? is the legislation going to be changed anytime soon?? the reason we weren't allowed all along is the troubles (headbangers) in the north. now that Gerry and his band of merry men have parked their horses then there's no reason for to have it banned:rolleyes::D

Hardly. Re-loading was allowed here all along. The IRA had no need of re-loading 7.62mm or 9mm.

The cost of reloading is much cheaper than most factory ammo available. However do not be "sucked in" by the appeal of cheap ammo as this is the outcome after the initial setup. Allowing for the fact that you do not intend to shoot target, and merely want consistant yet better ammo for your hunter you will be looking at:

Press - €120 for a good brand, base model.
Dies - €55 to include neck resize, full length resize and seating dies.
    Powder Thrower - €75
    Priming tool - €25
Scales - €125 for basic digital one
    Case trimmer - €100
    OAL gauge - €40
    Lube kit - €20
    Tumbler - €85
    Calipers - €30
Miltiple tools - €150, this includes funnels, primer pocket tool, flash hole tool, shell holders, bullet trays, bullet boxes, Kinetic hammer, deburring tool, trickler, etc.

Thats the tools needed for about €825. You could save a few quid by buying cheaper branded stuff, but at most you will save €150 max. So minimum price would be €675.

    Now the actual componants;

Powder - €65 per 2 pound (good for 300-ish rounds)
Bullets - €40 per 100 so €120 for 300 rounds to match powder.
    Primers - €35 per 1,000
    Cases - €65 per 100 so thats €195 per 300.

Now allowing for not needing cases you are looking at €220 per 300(ish) rounds. Giving you a cost per round of about €0.70 (could be lower depending on amount of rounds loaded from 2lb of powder).

So to sum up you have an initial outlay of €675 for equipment with €220 for the first 300 rounds. Thats €995. Then €220 per every 300 rounds after, with the occassional cost of a few boxes of brass. Cheap enough but if you only hunt and your yearly mount of ammo is 100 rounds then reloading is a bigger expense than its worth. You would need to be doing alot of shooting for the cost of the gear to pay for itself.

Until the new explosives Act is completed there is no definitive word on when or if it may be available to all shooters, and in what capacity.

Wrong. It was up until recently allowed under license by the DOJ/An Gardai.

So just shy of a grand to get set up for 500 rounds.

I suppose it is like any process (set up is the expensive part, ROI only in year 2 or 3)

It looks like a lot of work.
Watched a video of a guy doing VLD's the other night.

Took him 15 minutes to make 5 rounds, if you were doing a lot of shooting it would take hours to make a load of them.

I suppose if you spent a day at it you could make a years Hunting Supply

    Maybe some day.....................

The main benefit of re-loading isn't really the price.
It's not worth me re-loading compared to the price I get PRVI £10 per 20. But the bullet you would re-load would be of FAR higher quality, say on a par with Federal v-Shok, which would cost me £38 per 20.

TBH, I don't (as yet) shoot past 250 yards so I'll stick with the cheap PRVI's.
With the initial cost, followed by running costs and it being another thing taking up space, I'll stick with factory rounds for the time-being; even though, being from the 6 counties I could re-load if I wish.

Thats a good point and one i might get stick for saying, but there are those out there that really do not "need" reloading. The factory ammo provides all the quality they need when put against the usage compared to the price. For example i would use 60-100 rounds per year for deer, foxing, etc so if that was all i was doing then i really wouldn't bother with reloading. For €200 (max) per year i have all the ammo of the highest quality i need.

However if i were firing 1,000+ rounds per year in target work then the price becomes an issue, but as Glensman said its not about the price its about tailor making a round that best suits my rifle rather than me trying to "find" a round that works, and having to "settle" for that round. Then there is the cost and procedure of trying ammo. You do not simply make a bullet and shoot it. Its all trial and error. You load a few bullets then test fire on a range. Go back and "adjust" then fire again. keep doing this until you get the "ideal" setup. Thats why its called load development. :D

Anyway to get back onto the theme of the thread i was over in the midlands on the weekend and i forgot my ammo so i dropped down to Jim Griffin's to get some. He has a massive stock of new ammo in. I'll list out the ones i can remember and i think some of it was ammo that lads were looking for. Anything without a price is stuff i cannot remember. Anything with a * is something i am not 100% sure on, but will not be far off.

    .308
    HPS 155gr - €55 per 50 (Target)
    HPS 168gr - €55 - €65 per 50 (Target) (cannot remember which)
    HPS 190gr - €65 per 50 (Target)
    HPS 150gr Nosler - €99 per 50 (Hunting)

    .303
    HPS 175 gr - €45 per 50

    .223
    Hornady TAP 75gr - €36* per 20
There is other ammo, but i cannot remember the GR or price.

    .220
    Hornady 52gr A-Max - €?

    .22lr
    Eley Tenex - €12.50 per 50 or €120 per 500
    Eley Match - €11 per 50 or €100 per 500
    RWS - €?

Basic reloading setup should cost you less than 300 euro, the powder thrower , tumbler etc are optional extras

I bought Hornady Superperformance for €180 when I got 100
    Hps 125grain was €179 for 100

The Hornady Standard Deviation was better than the HPS, so it's all about high end precision

From Youtube Videos, it seems most reload to build a specific round to suit their requirements

For me I'd like to be able to chose a round that suited me.
Hornady to date has done that, however supply can be an issue of Hornady.

If I was making my own, I'd like something on a Par with Superperformance for teh .308

    and 90grain hot VLD's for the .223
