I'm just putting this out there for all you BR target shooters. Someting that will be competitive so I have a chance of it shooting good (the rifle not me).

What's a good rifle to start off with, in 22lr calibre?

I'm not into the peep sigths so looking at a scoped rifle, or is there the rifle that can have a peep sight and still take a scope (it's got a dovetail)??? And not OVER the TOP prices.

What comp's. can I shoot this type of rifle in??

and please if possible put up some links or images so I can find/see what type of rifle your talking about.

    Anschutz 1811, 1413, 1817, etc Match 54.
Weaver T36 fixed power scope with target reticle,
    Mounts
    Front rest,
Rear bag (Gator or similar with solid base)

All in all about €800 - €1,100 (max).

Tha Anschutz match 54's are extremely popular as they are super accurate, can be used with peep sights or a scope, are cheap, and can be used for BR, PR60, etc.

They are on the heavy side, so i suggested the T36 fixed power scope as you would be in the upper/top category (weight wise) and there are no scope magnification limits. Also the rifles vary from 25 to 50+ years old so can be gotten for between €250 and €500 (ish).

I personally don't shoot BR with any regularity (or at all these days to be honest), but:

    +1 on the Anschutz's.

Any decent old 1813, 1913, basically any Match 54 barrel and action will get you up and running.

The standard stocks will do the job to get you going - stick one of your existing scopes on top - front rest - back bag - and you're good to go. You can always pimp your ride later, but the Match54 with one of the scopes you already have will prove more than adequate for getting started into the BR game.

Don't worry about the age of the rifle. AFAIK the ones made in the late 50's and 60's are the best of the lot for the Match54's and so long as the rifle has been looked after, if it's a decent barrel, it will still outshoot the shooter. For example, DURC have a couple of rifles with about 250,000 rounds through them and they're still going strong and good accurate guns.

If you're around tomorrow, I'll have mine with me on the range and you can have a look. If not, I'll bring the rifle along next Saturday and you can see it then.

BTW If you do come across a 1813 or 1913 stock with a Match 54 barrelled-action, I'd gladly trade or swap you my current stock on my anschutz. For Benchrest AFAIK you will not need the adjustable cheekpiece and butt hooks etc, as a hard hold is not what is required in BR - My current stock is perfect for BR (that's what it was used for before I got it), but is lacking in the adjustments I'd really want for my PR60 ISSF set-up. So, if you do get one, I'd be happy to swap out the actions and do a trade with you.

There's always a good few anschutz's kicking around - Try Jim Griffin, Intershoot, etc - A decent second hand Match54 can be got for around the €450 - 500 mark.

You can shoot the rifle in any BR competitions around the place: AFAIK Hilltop always have a few competitions on, as do Rathdrum RPC, and Midlands also will be running their own BR club league later in the year - so plenty of choice there for you to get stuck in!

don't overlook the bsa martini actioned rifles , the internationals etc , you'll pick one up for a lot less then the anschutz and they're popular for it in the uk/states.

Remember that in Benchrest Rifle there are three classifications - Heavy Varmint,Light Varmint and International Sporter - all to do with weight of the rifle and allowed magnification

    for more details see http://www.nasrpc.ie/disciplines/benchrest-rifle

International spoter class can be a good intro if you already have suitable kit - it would, however, in many peoples view, be the more difficult class.

The basic rules for International Sporter are that the rifle, including scope - and bipod if being used - must weigh no more than 8.5lbs

the scope magnification may not be higher that 6.5x - if it is capable of more the range officer will set it and may tape it

you see many people shoot this class with the same rifle they use for bunnies but 6.5x on a .22" X ring at 50m is a
    tough challenge

    Another option to consider
