If I read the email correctly, is it that only lecturers can vote on who becomes Provost? Or can the students do so, also?

A perusal of his CV gives the lie to the story that he hasnt any admin experience. In fact, he probably has more than all (Save perhaps Des Fitz) the rest. Plus hes the only one that has sat at the top of the political tree in fraught discussions and looked politicians in the eye.

Foundation scholars get a big chunk of the vote, then scholars, then students. Students only account for ~1% of the vote IIRC.

That doesn't sound quite right to me... as I understand it, the SU representatives are co-opted to the electorate ex officio (for example, all the SU reps on the College Board or the University Council), and they use their ballots to vote en masse according to the results of the poll held by the SU. Scholars have one representative (the secretary).

He has more gowns than fortycoats: 3 earned masters, a phd, a BA (from the other place...still..a BA). AFAIK hes going on commons sometime soon w Barra Roantree...AFAIK. So, yes, but clearly not every night...could the human frame withstand 3650 commons meals in a row!

To the best of my knowledge it's the 1 GSU rep on Board, 2 GSU Reps on Council, 3 SU Reps on Board and 4 SU Reps on Council. The Schol Secretary sits on Council but doesn't get a vote AFIK, as they are in-attendance (non-voting) members. That's 9 in total out of the total electorate (theres one student rep sitting on both bodies.). I could be wrong on these numbers but that's what I remember.

The foundation scholars do not get a vote (keeping in mind there are 70 of them), that ~1% number wouldn't really work out. See http://www.tcd.ie/provost-appointment/statute/#electorate anyway for details. Just looking at that now there may be 2 extra student votes with the Schol Secretary and 1 extra in-attendance GSU rep on Council.

There was a motion last year passing through Board (and got through first time) which would have seen the introduction of a 4% value direct student poll for the Provost. The fellows shot it down last year because they have to give permission for any sort of change to the statues of the College. Very annoying that they did that and looked awful from an outsiders perspective. It'd be interesting to find out if any of the fellows running for Provost voted against the increase in a vote for students.

In fairness, those who haven't commenced aren't in the best position to be deciding who's going to be in charge of Trinity. The fact that we've a small say in matters is remarkable compared to other institutions.

4% wouldn't exactly be deciding it. Plus postgrads account for a very high part of the student population. Most Universities in Ireland have similar student representation. It's guaranteed by the Universities Act 1997

I still don't think students are in much of a position to be deciding who's to be Provost. It would be like letting customers decide who the shop manager should be (i.e. the one who gives out the most free booze with every sandwich bought). Great for the customer, not so great for the shareholders.

Best leave it to the fellows and the senior administrators.

Patrick Prendergast attempted to add me to facebook, then I received an email from him that began:

Dear Postgraduate Student:

Over the next few days you will be asked to cast your vote for the next Provost of Trinity College.

I didn't think I had a vote, if it turns out I do I'll not be using it.

Sort out the library, budget deficit and quality of teaching first, let's leave the iPads until we're no longer financially screwed.
