    So Ladies and Gents

To settle an age old debate. What are your preferences with regard to the teabag, milk, and operation in making said cup of tea?

Do you prefer to pour in the milk first and then the teabag, or does the cuppa taste better if you let the teabag stew for a bit?

Or are you more partial to a herbal tea :D

Milk in last if it's a teabag definitely!

If it's a pot of tea at the Mammy's, then milk first.

Don't use teabags, and always use teapot. So milk in cup before tea in cup. i.e. the correct way.

    1. Cup.
    2. Teabag.
    3. Hot water.
    4. Stir.
    5. Squish the teabag to within an inch of it's life.
    6. Take out teabag.
    7. Tiny drop of milk.
    8. ??????
    9. Profit.

It's not an age old debate.
It was settled many, many years ago.
A scientific study found that only the most predatory of paedophiles and the mentaly ill put the milk in first. Fact!

Who the hell puts a teabag in milk? You'd then have to take the tea bag out, covered in milk..which will then stink up whatever bin it goes into.

    Makes no sense.

If a milk soaked teabag is the smelliest thing to go into your bin, that's very very strange... How bout meat bits, that gone off mandarin in the back of the fridge, fish, etc. etc.?

You can make me a cuppa any day! I always have to make the tea at work cos everyone else puts in too much milk...

I have explained manys the time 'you know when someone says they like a drop of milk so you put in a splosh, then you give another drop for good measure, Ya? Well leave out the extra drop for me please'

They think I'm weird cos I'm so fussy about tea, but it's a win for them cos they always get their tea made for them :)

Seriously, what's with the lack of Atari Jaguar in the poll options lately. AH seems to be growing up. :(

I put the teabag in first and take it out before putting in the milk. I also like my cuppa's colour to look like the skin of a Mexican.

Why do people put milk in tea  And particularly black tea as opposed to other types?

It dilutes the taste and is not nice. If the tea is too hot, then let it cool down a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,178 ✭✭✭✭NothingMan

It's really very simple. Find sleeping victim with open mouth. Unzip trousers. Expose scrotum and dip into open mouth while mate takes picture.

Any other way and you're doing it wrong.

The sugar and fat round and enhance the flavour, while taking away the bitter kick. Its not about cooling the tea (well for me anyway).

But its only black teas I'd add milk to I think. It must be reasonably bitter/astringent to deserve the milk treatment.

Teabag in, followed by boiling water then sugar, stir and add milk!

Then get the biscuits out, pref rich tea but not to dunk, oh no, just to practice a couple of 'rounds' for the next soggy biscuit competition :pac:

milk in tea? That's just plain wrong, you'd never see anyone from tea-producing countries doing that & they'd know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 869 ✭✭✭Osgoodisgood

    Milk after teabag of course.
Teapot would be better but milk still goes in last.
But I wouldn't get all squiffy if the right amount of milk went in first by mistake. I can get on board with that.

What I can't accept is calling it a "cuppa"!

I never said it was the smelliest thing. If they were to build up in a bin soaked in milk it would be rotten.

I live on the top floor of a very warm apartment block. The bins go down to the basement. Result? Having to figure out what things stink up the bins the most. Worst offenders - anything with milk, uncleaned egg shells and uncleaned fish containers.

I wash out egg shells, wash fish tin containers and don't put nasty milk soaked teabags in the bin.

    Milk in last....

Sometimes leave the tea bag in for an extra strong cuppa!!!

Sometimes no milk at all & accompanied by many profanities as someone else used that last drop at work.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,388 ✭✭✭gbee

The traditional British costume is to use only China tea pots and China Cups for their tea.

The tea was brewed in the pot ~ when this was determined to be of the correct density/strength it was time to pour.

The milk would be added FIRST for two reasons: A: It protected the delicate China Tea ware. B: It acts as a brewing arrester so the teas won't get any or much stronger.

People who like milky watery weak teas will usually put the milk in first, the milk arrests the brewing and keeps the teas weak .

People who like medium, strong or brewed teas won't touch the cup with milk until they are about to drink and the milk's function is merely for taste.

A chemical reaction take place between the tea and the milk. This reaction cannot be undone. :)

Milk should never be added before the tea bag ffs. Philistines.

Milk is only added first to a china cup before the tea (already brewed) is added.

Of course you can always have tea without milk.

Sugar, then hot water, then teabag, and after a bit of squeezing, some milk :D

Then why not get a black tea that is less bitter?

just after making an epic brew.

    1. Put on toasted sandwich
    2. Pour water into cup (preloaded with tea bag)
    3. stir teabag and squeeze til it almost bursts.
    4. Scoop out teabag with spoon, hook teabag into sink.
    5. Add 2 sugars then milk.
    6. Eat epic sambo and drink tea.
    7. Wait for someone to complain as to why there is sugar all over counter and a teabag in the sink.

I know there are. I have about ten at home actually (plus many other teas) which I've picked up in Harrod's, Dublin, Bath, Brussels, Paris and Aachen I think.

The bitterness isn't a problem though. The milk just eases it, plus the tannins which are quite harsh in black tea. Overall I find the milk rounds and softens tea.

Suger has to go in before the milk and the milk has to go in after the bag!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭happyoutscan

Don't squeeze the teabag. Instead, leave it in for an extra half minute. Perfect Tea will be yours.

The author of 'A nice cup of tea and a sit down' gave the recipe for a perfect cuppa when he was interviewed on the G Ryan Show 3-4 years ago which I followed ever since:

Best tea is made with loose leaves in a pot, however if using a teabag:

    Tea bag in cup
    Pour in boiling water
Wait around 40 seconds to brew
    Light squeeze and remove
Add small amount of milk to taste

I also add sugar before pouring in the hot water so it dissolves completely and prefer semi-skimmed than full fat milk, for a nice strong flavour.

Another interesting fact I heard somewhere is that the fat in the milk actually keeps your tea hotter for longer.

I loath weak tea, too much milk added, or the bag left in the cup.

Teabag then add milk for me.

Christ, putting milk in first would be a bit like wiping your ass before a sh1t - why?
