Personally I couldn't see that at all in the beta, only game it's similar to is MAG and that's not a bad thing.

An XP system, weapon unlocks, killstreak/objective rewards, the bomb tech getting a noobtube and an auto shotgun, a cover system straight out of GOW, and respawn gamemodes.

It may not be a COD clone, but it is a SOCOM that doesn't know itself.

I deleted it after 30-odd hours play, and judging by that review I'll avoid it for campaign also.

    Gametrailers video review...

    looks like a missed opportunity.

Gametrailers seemed to like it it got 7.9 and they said it was pretty unique.

Joystick say its a 3rd person COD rip off

    Only played it earlier....

    Disappointing to say the least.
Zipper should have noted the reviews MAG got which were by and large poor.

They took everything that was good about the last game and done away with it.
It was very satisfying to survive a full round of and kill off two or three people. Running around like an idiot resulted in a quick death and a wait until the round ended so there was a certain amount of realism to the way people approached it.

Talking on your headset would result in a voice that the opposing team could hear(if you were a floor below an enemy talking you could hear it coming above like the words were coming from the players mouth)

It was rough but it was different, and it's sad to see they didn't build on that and went down the ''Deathmatch'' avenue.

Hearing gunfire was rare, whereas now it's just a free for all with too many players on the map.

It seems the only game now that gives you a strategic option is Battlefield as all the others are now Noob fests of ''Running around in circles killing as many as possible with no basis''.

    Gutted at the Joystiq review.
I was really looking forward to teaming up with a couple of yiz and playing through the SP game.
I really thought Zipper were going to pull a gem out of the bag.

I don't think i'll bother with this now, I've enough MP games i'm enjoying at the moment without throwing 50 quid at this.

At least the Socom forums should make for amusing reading. Zipper are going to get slaughtered for this.

You do know there's a classic mode with no respawn or killstreaks?

    .

Very good point, when MAG came out it got slated by the press and then went on to be one of the best shooters on any console.

Another point to keep in mind is this is mainly an online game and the press are notoriously bad at online games that require team work as they have deadlines to meet so have to just fly through games and don't have the time to put in the hours and build good squads like the rest of us can.

Poor review from Eurogamer too which is disappointing as I was hoping for another whack at a decent Move-controlled shooter.

After MAG I'm not as surprised I guess, while there are one or two people around these parts who stand by it, between the critical and general userbase opinions it really was a disappointment considering the hype generated in the lead up to it's release. :(

As i said about the press and multiplayer games, this is a 2 page review with 1 paragraph given over to the multiplayer side and all they say is that they tried to heal someone got shot, someone tried to heal them and got shot. !!

It has just landed in the door so im off to give it a shot, still holding out hopes this will be a solid 7/10 game. Maybe more once the headless chickens drop off after week 2.

Yes I was aware of that, but it's an after taught tacked on. Whereas in the last game it was the default mode.

You can play COD with respawns off(search and destroy?) doesn't chance how the game is played or feels

I loved the last one, it was tough but rewarding to survive a full round with a few kills.
It doesn't even feel the same now, too much like MAG as opposed to Socom.

It's just not Socom to me

I didn't mean that in the way you're thinking :D

I didn't like MAG, I bought up hoping for an improvement on the beta and sold it to my cousin later the same day.
The mechanics are awful and lagging miles behind COD and Battlefield.

played the beta for 4 minutes , then turned it off .. game belongs in the toilet.
taken away so many features from the other socom games. disappointing , had high hopes for it but its just mag with a 3rd person camera

    lol i know :D

People loved MAG because it was not trying to be COD or Battlefield and introduced elements like squads and working together that appealed to people and those elements where so strong they could over look any small issues.

I would advise people that don't like MAG to not bother getting SOCOM so far it is pretty much MAG in 3rd person(in looks, sound and feel). That will be music to some peoples ears but not to others.

I'm 2 missions in, playing it with the Sharp shooter and i like it, but the button mapping is terrible. Cover is important but the cover button is O which is really hard to find on the Nav. The Move button then (which was cover in Killzone and just under the trigger) is for grenades which you rarely use.

I've managed to find a good balance between turning and the dead zones so its easier to look around but im still getting my head around controlling 2 squads while also looking after myself. It is cool when you set up a trap having your squads flank the enemy and it works, not so cool when your squad just walk out into the open and get shot to bits. :(

You're surely not saying Confrontation was Socom to you. Confrontation didn't feel like a Socom game to me and about a thousand other people. It was made by a different developer, got some of the worse reviews ever, was unplayable for the first few months and was nothing like the games that were so addictive on the PS2. Don't get me wrong I liked the game and put some amount of hours into it but it wasn't a Socom game.

I think Zipper tried to take Socom and give it a next gen remake to attract a new audience. Maybe it's not what everyone was looking for but hopefully they take the suggestions and feedback from most players to make Socom 4's online enjoyable. The support they gave to MAG was unbelievable, no doubt they'll support this in the same fashion.

Edit. @Grumpypants What's your views on the Sharpshooter so far? I'm getting it next week and going to give it a go with KZ3 single player.

I know it was made by a different company but it was a hell of a lot more of a SOCOM game then this one is.

Obviously it was different to the PS2 games but that's a given you're talking a new system, engine and all that, you'd hardly say GTA 4 is anything like GTA San Andreas giving the tech differences and time span.

The reviews were poor but you're neglecting the fact the game was unplayable on release and since it was online only it was never going to score well.

I remember one review said reviewing it on launch wasn't fair considering most online games (between 2006-2008ish) launched with major problems and if they got the issues sorted he would have upped his score.
I didn't have it on release so didn't experience any of these problems but they were meant to be game killers.

Zipper might be the original developers but between the two on the PS3 so far, Confrontation is more Socom-esque.

Historically the game was based on small teams of specialists thrown in behind enemy lines etc....(you know the story)
Confrontation's game modes reflected this and the engine was geared towards no respawns which added that tactical element.
Now you're just talking about a deathmatch large scale kill fest.

I don't buy shooters for offline, which would put me in the minority(I haven't cleared the past two FPS's I've bought) so I can't see myself investing in this on the basis of what I played so far.

I think its brilliant. Killzone is very good with it Socom im getting to gripes with.

One section i played just now. I was attacking a base guarded by around 10 guys . I got my squads to flank either side, targeted my squads to take out 3 or 4 guys on each side of the group and then i took the middle 3. Quickly came out of cover running at full pace told my squad to open fire, then with the Sharp shooter i could just quickly aim and took out two guys with head shots, single bullet kills and put 2 bullets in the other guy as my team took out the rest. 10 guys slaughtered in 2-3 seconds, before they even knew we were there. Class.

Sharp shooter makes moments like that.

So as a fan of SOCOM1 &2, is this a no go? I didnt like 3 and by the looks of it wont like 4 - was really looking forward to this as I prefer 3rd person shooters

Prior to buying this game on Friday night, I read the following review from my most trusted source:

    http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/861080-socom-special-forces-review-special-online-service

I couldn't believe the game would be as bad as that; it actually turned out worse. I still love the original Socom games, but I wouldn't have judged part 4 on the basis of that fondness alone.

Thats a very low score - Would love to be able to play SOCOM 1 & 2 on PS3 but they probably wouldnt be up to scratch.

I think maybe its time for me to embrace FPS :(

In my opinion, the score was generous. I bought it in Xtra-vision. They gave me full credit in exchange for it when I returned it within 24 hours, so if you're really eager to try it, why not avail of that exchange offer (assuming there might be other desirable games/movies on the horizon for you).

true - thats a good option alright. Cant believe you brought it back within 24 hours!
