Apologies this is the wrong place to ask, but didn't know where else to post this.

Is there a lcd/plasma telly out there that can do freesat hd and saorview - that is take a cable from the sky dish (and tune in all the free channels) as well as take a cable from the antenna and show the saorview chanenls.

It would be even better if the said tv has a decent EPG and would also timeshift and record to external USB. :) Next on list would be wifi. :o

Am I asking for too much?

    Thanks a million!

I thought this would be the solution as well as there are freesat tvs with dvb-t tuners. I think the problem is the epg can be one or the other. So no combined epg.

The Sony KDL-32V5810, sold by Power City will do proper Freesat and Saorview as it has satellite and terrestrial digital/analogue tuners.
It won't output to USB for recording, but the SCART output is ok if you have a recorder of some sort. Doesn't do wireless, but it has an ethernet port which will accept streamed audio and video via DLNA.
The EPGs are separate as you have to flick the "digital" button to move between satellite and terrestrial tuners, but it's trivial IMHO.

This is an end of life model as Sony are not doing combined sat/terrestrial TVs any more. But it's very good quality.

    Thanks guys.

Found the Sony on Powercity website, and it does have DTT and freesat HD.

    Model : KDL32V5810
    Specifications
    Sony 32inch 50hz Lcd
    1080p Full Hd Picture
    Mpeg4 Irish Digital Tv
    Also With Hd Satellite Tuner
    4x Hdmi Digital Connections
    Mheg5 Teletext
    Bravia 3 Picture Engine
    Usb With Movie Playback
    Dlna Home Networking
    Internet On Tv With Applicast
Bbc And Itv Hd Via Astra Satellite
    Satellite Dish Required

However, rest of the specs looks poor (50 Hz) for the price - €550, which is how much Samsung/LG/Panasonic 50" screens cost these days! Hmm, decisions decisions..!

KDL32W5810 is the 100hz freesat range of the same. The Sony Z5800 is the 200hz version. All of these are now discontinued - Freesat Tvs on the market are like limited edition!

The LG LF7700 range was discontinued last year.

I wont recommend anything Panasonic as they cripple the firmware for reasons only known to Panasonic. (the G20s seem to be okay, but again I cant recommend them because god knows what would happen down the line that would kill it)

Samsung have a new range of Freesat Combo Tvs coming out in March. They even have CI+.

Now you have option anxiety. Try and pick up a Sony or LG on the cheap in a clearence sale should one exist.

Couldn't find any other than that 50Hz Sony on Powercity. May be I should wait till March and see what Samsung has to offer and how LG is matching it.

I have a Samsung that does all of the above, including time shift, LAN and wifi support (wifi requires separate adapter).

It's not Freesat branded, so the satellite channels only show now & next data (suits me, it's only a second TV).

Note that Samsung have announced they will launch Freesat TVs around April (we should get more details soon).

Don't get Hertz anxiety either;) The V is a 50Hz refresh and the W is 100Hz certainly, but I've seen reports where gamers have turned off the 100Hz refresh as it was interfering with guns etc.
I can't say I've noticed any flicker on the Sony. I have a Panasonic 100Hz plasma and I can tell straight away if it's set on 50Hz as there is a slight flicker noticeable in my peripheral vision.

I am looking for a TV for the bedroom wall - hence the "quest" for the least messy set with everything into one. My main rig is a 100Hz with PS3 - which might also need an update, but not after seeing the state of my payslip today..!! :(

I am probably hijacking my own thread but, I have to ask, is Freesat HD is becoming a less attractive feature due to Freeview in the UK? Does this mean sooner or later the number and quality of channels in Freesat will drop? If this happens I can really see getting stuck with a mediocre Irish Freeview (saorview), as I really don't have the money to shell out to $ky.

No. Because the reason for Freesat is ultimately the same as reason for Saorsat. Universal Terrestrial coverage isn't possible. So all the Important Terrestrial Channels are supposed to be always FTA on Satellite.

It is highly unusual to see Freesat products sold openly in Ireland especially by a large chainstore!!!! Freesat dont intend for their branded products ending up here.

The reason they probably are being sold is because they are a discontinued product. More and more UK consumers are copping on to the new Freeview HD tuners on the market which are on the DVB-T2 hardware platform. The current Freesat Combos have dvb-t tuners (outside the g20) and whilst they are perfect for displaying Irish DTT in HD, they are no good for Freeview HD in the UK due to their choice of different platform for HD.

In this case it is a prime example of a UK dumped product being of actual but not intended benefit to the Irish consumer. They are limited stock however and thats also why they are cheap.

Likewise you can buy a 32" LG dvb-t full HD (no freesat - just DTT) for €313 for the same reason. More benefits of stuff whilst being sold as Freeview SD in the UK (actually having HD capabilities over here due to our choice of dvb-t and the MPEG4 processor being on board - not all Freeview products are sold this way - you must read the spec to see MPEG4 H264 L4 chip being on board). If the major chains realised this we would be paying more for these, as they are also dumping MPEG2 stock and cant tell themselves what they are dumping and how beneficial they are to us rather than being a hinderance!!

When the Samsung 2011 similar size model comes on the market it will be €250 plus on top of that, they always are when first released. My advice get the Sony whilst you can. The LG 7700 Freesat combo range series cant be bought for love nor money as they discontinued before this Sony range. This will leave Samsung as the only combo in town come March/April. They seem to take it in turns, which leads me to believe that its not a profitable area for manufacturers. It is of course a perfect solution for Ireland for Free to Air Irish and British channel viewing with 7 day epg for both.

If you really want the 100hz version ie the W5810, well you could get it from Leekes in the UK who are selling it on special price of £399STG (apx €462). They do ship to Ireland. You will have to contact them for the cost of that though. LINK I am sure the total cost for the 100hz will still be less than the Power City price for the 50hz.

Very informative post STB, but just checked that link and it says that the TV is only available in store, so no posting to RoI.

Do they agree to post if you call them?

Shipping to UK is over £23. I can imagine how much they'd be looking for to post to Ireland.

    Hi
I recently purchased the Panasonic 50" V20L. It has a sat tuner and DTT tuner. On another thread I learned that I can't get FreeSat but can get free to air channels. What is the difference and can I get HD channels on the free to air? Also, as I live close to the border will i be able to avail of Freeview HD when it goes live at the end of 2012. There is recording to usb hdd and I'm wondering can it be used with the free to air?
    Many thanks

Freeview = UK Tv via aerial, DVB-T
Freesat = Free UK TV via Dish and LNB. Free To Air, DVB-S

Freesat has HD, but is the Sat Tuner a DVB-S2 model? But for now the free HD channels are on regular DVB-S so should work if you add dish and LNB.

It will record whatever it can tune
    http://www.saortv.info/channels/uk-televison/

Freeview HD needs a DVB-T2 tuner. I'm not sure the TV has one. Irish HD uses DVB-T

All the freesat Tvs combos are Freesat HD (ie DVB-S2 with proprietary Freesat software). All of them have dvb-t tuners packaged in conjunction but because the MPEG4 L4 processor is on board for the HD sat side it works for DTT (except the Panasonic range which disabled mpeg4 reception on the dtt side).

Then there is a Freesat HD/Freeview HD combo in the Panasonic G20B/V20B range which didnt diable use of MPEG4 on the dvb-t2 side as it is required for Freeview HD and hence will work for Irish DTT. But Panasonic are not to be trusted as people have learnt the hard way.

The V20L is the European model and doesnt include the Freesat software just a dvb-s2 tuner which enable you pick up all the free to air satellite stations including HD etc. The difference ? The Freesat 7 day epg isnt present so you get now/next info only. And the press the red button isnt present for the BBC Sports channels, so they must be tuned in manually. In other words its like a combo box. You delete the stations you dont want and form favourite groups. Oh yeah and MHEG5 (for digital text and planned Irish DTT EPG) isnt enabled for Ireland country profile. This applies on ALL the L range. We are not using MHEG5 according to Panasonic. It cant be enabled either by switching to UK country profile because it is not in the menu setup options - because they have a specific UK model in the G20b/v20b range.

People think Panasonic is Toyota and BMW all wrapped up in one box. They are not, but are over hyped, overpriced and weird pathetic attitude to Firmware design and upgrades.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 557 ✭✭✭Gipo3

I was just thinking, if a Saorsat twin tuner box ever came out, obviously it would have mheg 5, would this then be able to download freesat epg.

    No.
Because Freesat EPG is a custom method. It's using special format only used by Freesat. An MHEG5 application can't access the EPG data for Freesat unless it's a Freesat licensed box.

There is also unlikely to ever be a Saorsat specific box as it's officially only for 2% of population and a "Freesat HD" or generic "DVB-S2 HD MHEG5" box will work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

The Freesat EPG is compressed with proprietary tables so it's unlikely that the receiver would handle it properly unless the manufacturer had applied for a Freesat licence.

thanks all. now i know why v20 l is cheaper than v20b.

I am tempted to purchase the Sony KDL32V5810 after reading some of the posts here as this has MPEG4 and Satellite tuning and I have to date found that Sony receivers are usually very good.

However just a quick question - has the KDL32V5810 got a headphone socket?.

Which Samsung Model do you have?

I have the Sony in my Bedroom and while it won't record to USB drive it isperfect for watching Irish TV and Freesat. I still have to get the DNLA working from my server tho!!!

I've found a Samsung LED that has both terrestrial and satellite tuners, with wifi and external USB record/timeshift. model UE40D6500.

But I want to know if I can record from the satellite input while watching the terrestrial channels and vice-versa. Bit of a bugger if only one can work at a time.

    Anyone tried this yet?

    Cheers,
    Phil

Doesn't work. You can only record what you are watching.

For more advanced recording functions you would really need a dedicated PVR.

I thought that would be the case. I'll probably get the Samsung D6500 anyway, and then get a humax freesat pvr later on once I've convinced the wife!

    Thanks,

jacob2, this thread is from 2011.

I bought a LG 47LM649S in 2013 - it has wifi, 3d etc but more importantly both dvb-s & dvb-t tuners, ie, I have it working directly wired to the Sky dish, and the roof-top antenna, and I get every channel possible. Loads of HD channels, no shortage of interesting programs to watch. Saorview EPG is limited but I can live with that.

Anyway, old thread, and this type of TVs are probably the norm now anyway.
