Smokers; do you regret taking up smoking?

I don't smoke but I'm curious as to whether or not people who do smoke regret taking up the habit/ wish they didn't smoke/ want to give up. I've smoked when drunk on occasion and enjoyed it, although I can see that trying to get away with having just 2 or 3 when drunk every so often is a stupid thing to do as it is so easy to get addicted (I haven't done this in months and don't intend to in the future). So smokers, regret taking it up?

There should be a poll option for people who quit, asking do they regret taking it up in the first place.
    Just saying :o
Twas harder to get fit again as an ex-smoker, I had the lung capacity of a f*cking teabag for ages.

Should have added the option to the poll to say that
    - you've given up smoking and regret ever taking it up
    - you've given up smoking but masochistically are glad you took it up at one stage!!
    - you smoke rarely (eg. 2 or 3 sometimes on a night out) but are not addicted

Also, does anybody smoke a very small number of cigarettes a day eg. 3 or less? That would be pretty strange

Yes definitely regret ever putting a fag in my mouth but I looked so cool when I was thirteen with a big superking sticking out of my mouth  I got an e-cig three weeks ago and have not smoked a fag since, best invention ever. I'm richer and smell nicer and can taste my food, it's all good :)

Considering i only started smoking when i was 29, yes its the biggest regret i hold personally.

I intend on giving them up very soon.

I fvckin love smoking. For me the smoking ban was brilliant becuase i hate to smoke indoors but i love to smoke out doors so it was great when everyone had to go out to smoke.

Yes it is expensive but jaysus i just love that sweet sweet taste and had to lay of the coke and hookers to fund my smoking:D

Thats what it all come down to in 1 post.

Even after not smoking for 5 years I still crave them.

Wish had a bit more sense as a kid and did not bend to peer pressure .

Hmm, looking at the poll results and using common sense, I'm going to take a guess that almost all smokers think exactly this. You's must look at 13 year olds smoking and want to smack them across the head..

Wow. Goes to show that it's not worth smoking even one on a night out, you can get hooked at any age. If it's any consolation, I think my auntie started smoking in her mid 30's so her decision was more irresponsible!

Well, i wouldnt blame "one night out"

I would have now and again had a cig when i was out - its only when i broke up with my ex and was living on my own mixed up with some personal issues i started smoking out of stress mixed with bordem

Yes. I'm young and fit now so the €1000's I've spent and continue to spend are the major issue, but if I'm still shackled 20 years down the line I'll have health concerns to deal with as well.

Trouble is, my addiction is not rally physical but strongly psychological. A smoke goes well with or after any number of activities - I like a smoke with a drink, I chain smoke when I'm on stimulants, I love a smoke after a meal, I enjoy a smoke after exercise, and there's nothing better than a fag with a cup of tea. That ain't ever gonna change, but hopefully I'll be able to sacrifice these not-insignificant pleasures for the greater good at some stage.

    absolutely regret it..

It was cool when I was 13 to smoke..

    It is not cool now..

I'm addicted, I wish I was strong enough to give it up..
I have tried a few times, I was off them for 3 years..

Smoking is disgusting, it makes me smell, my house smells and I stand outside pubs in the fecking snow and rain to smoke..

I am "usually" a sensible, intelligent person, so it gets on my titis that I still smoke.. more than 20 years later..

    STUPID STUPID STUPID :(

The 'few on a night out' is how a few people I know got started.
People say their not addicted, it can happen slowly over a few years.

Absolutely, i only started at 21 after i was diagnosed with Crohn's...stress and all that, i deeply regret it. But like any addict find it very hard to quit + i'm all much higher risk due to my illness + meds.

most grateful i took up smoking i remember how i was a headless human equivalent of a chicken then all of a sudden *poof* i was calm, collected, and cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,705 ✭✭✭Johro

I'm off the ciggies for nearly two weeks now. Need to do stuff instead of smoking... I was thinking of having more sex but I'd only want one afterwards...;)
The craving's not so bad now (for the ciggies:p) but still tough enough at certain times. After dinner, with a cuppa, in the evening watching telly...
Still, thinking 'I didn't smoke today' when going to bed feels great. So far so good.
