.22LR Advice Sought

Afternoon gents. I am seeking some advice. I've been using a BRNO .22 magnum rifle for a few years now. Just around the farm shooting rabbits, crows and magpies mostly. However, there are a few more horses around the place than there used to be and I'm finding the the magnum is just too loud for the job. Thus, I am considering switching to a .22LR that I will suppress and use sub-sonic bullets with. Does this sound like a fair course of action to you? Most of my shooting is done at around 50 yards, so the drop in power won't be a big issue. Also, do you have any recommendations of a make/model of .22LR for the job at hand? I am happy to buy a new rifle/scope, but a second-hand pairing in good condition is fine by me too.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Welcome aboard.

If your shooting is 50 even 70yds max, and you have no nterest in anything else (targets/competitions, etc) then look no further than the tried and trusted CZ .22lr. Cheap, accurate, reliable, pre-threaded for a mod.

    You will not go wrong.

    Welcome to boards!

As Ez said any CZ in .22lr will do your job nicely. Also there's the savage but it might be a bit harder to find second hand.
You can go on Guntrader.co.uk to get an idea of prices... Obviously add a wee bit more for Ireland.

    Thanks for the replies, gents.

Is there any chance that .22LR is not the only calibre to seriously I should consider? My main consideration is noise. Is there an alternative calibre that will offer me more stopping power whilst not making too much of a (silenced) noise?

If you've a few bob a Sako Finnfire, if you can find one or a Sako Quad in .22lr would be my recommendation ;)

Not really. You can get a moderator for the magnum if you like- I think ASE do one specificallly for the .22mag for about €100 or €120. I tried a SAK mod on my .22magnum but it was a waste of time.

Your best bet if you want to keep noise to a minimum is the .22lr with a mod and subsonic rounds...

.17 hmr could have a mod fitted to it. think its fairly quiet.

but if you are only shooting at 50 yards then the .22lr would be perfect. and half the price of the mag for bullets.

Any ammo which is shot through a moderated rifle (bar the sub sonic stuff) will have a sonic crack which is loud and noticeable.

So if sound is the number one problem a moderated .22lr shooting sub sonic ammo is the best option.

If you still want the power but a reduction in noise, get your current rifle threaded and apply for permission to use a moderator on it.

Mayfly36 has a modded 17hmr Annie- not even a wee bit quiet!

As said by Vegeta; if noise is the concern the the lr is the answer! :)

Yep, have to agree with the lads above, the .22LR is the way to go Ok.
I have an Anschutz .22LR Semi-Auto with a Parker Hale moderator fitted and when used in conjunction with sub-sonic rounds, the only noise I hear is the sound of the rifles firing mechanism - Its great for use on land with livestock that are easily spooked - I wouldnt go past it for the job :)

You won't go to far wrong with a cz. This was the result of walk threw one field with my cz style .22lr with a sack mod and a hawk scope.
3 bunny 80,100&120 yards. And a fox they happened across me at 40 yards

You won't go wrong with the CZ range of 22ls rifles. My son picked up one second hand €225 so ring around the dealers there's plenty for good value. My cz style with timber stock is in stakelums thurles along with a few others for sale. Get a SAK mod and your good to go

They're not the most accurate subs BUT they are very good to kill. I think they have gone up a good bit this year from what I'm hearing? Heard they are now approx €6.80 per box?

Pay €5 for my Winchester Subs, not a fan though. They don't group very well @50m so I'm not comfortable taking a shot with them.
