While out rabbit shooting this afternoon we came across this pair. The rifle is unloaded at all times. Unfortunately I had left my regular camera at home, so had to use the mobile phone camera behind the rifle scope, far from ideal.

I think some of the hares here still retain the ability to change colour for the extreme weather. That could be complete bs but it's in my head for some reason.

    Great pictures JG

Are the the ones that turn white in the winter or just a bit of albino?

Nout wrong with the photos - quite good actually!

We were out lamping last saturday night and saw loads and loads of hares around 20 to 30 over the whole night. about 50% of them were very white like in john's photos.

We've lots of hares, but I've never seen any like these before. Neither has my mate who's been shooting for 18 years or so.

Ya have seen a good few of them around these parts as well. Didn't know they could change colours.

Pretty good photo for a phone through a scope John.

White winter (white rocks) and the genes kicked in the change, Lepus timidus hibernicus as far as I know do not turn all white (at least I have not seen all white LTH's), but have some mix of white, grey, black and blue.

I've never seen this before either! but i do remember reading somewhere that the Irish hare has the ability to change it's colour during harsh weather!
    Well done with the photo's!!;)

Sometimes the hares turn pure white up here John after a long period of snow and frost. The local legends talk of the Creggan White Hare near me. I have only seen one in my lifetime that was totally white but I see hares like yours most days I'm out. Nice pics by the way.

Very nice pics JG:) - the Irish Hare is a sub-species of the Arctic Hare and can indeed exibit charactieristics of its near relative at this time of year. I have seen hares like this in this part of the country over the years too, usually associated with hard winters
