    This is for a friend............................

Not sure this can be answered here. I reckon you'd need to do it 'live' on a target on a range with the setup as all would be different?

He has a .308 and wants to shoot F T/R.

    Rifle details
    30" Barrel
    1 in 12 twist
    Nightforce Scope

    Ammo details

    HPS 155 Grain

Can anyone advise using a zero distance of say 100 yards and then advise on elevation clicks required up to and including 1000 yards?

you could probably get information that will get you to within a few clicks out to five or six hundred, but the exact velocity gets so critical beyond that that he'd need to do it live, basically. If he can chronograph it, he'll be much better able to predict it, as barrels are so individual in the velocities they produce. Even twenty or so feet per second becomes a big deal in terms of shot fall at that range. The lads doing it will have more detailed information though.

    Here ya go;

Yds - Adjustments in MOA - Clicks
    100 - zero
    200 - 1 moa - 4 clicks
    300 - 4.5 moa - 18 clicks
    500 - 10.75 moa - 43 clicks
    600 - 13 moa - 52 clicks
    800 - 22.5 moa - 90 clicks
    900 - 27.25 moa - 108 clicks
    1,000 - 33.5 moa - 134 clicks

These are actual shot adjustments in a 30", 1:12 twist Savage rifle using 155 gr HPS ammo with a Nightforce scope with 0.25 click value.

They may vary by up to 0.5 moa or 2 clicks depending on weather conditions, cold, etc, but its guarunteed to get you on paper. The wind is another matter. :D

    No hassle.
do you use 20moa base on the mounts ?

Yes. I'm actually thinking of changing for a 30 or 40 MOA base.

Most rifles for FTR can use up to 22 MOA of the scope adjustments to get the 100 yd zero. It can also be as low as 7 - 9 MOA, but thats rare. Considering the majority of scope used would have a relatively high mag power, somewhere in the 30-45 power range, they do not have the same internal adjustments as a lower powered scope. Its usually in the region of 40 - 55 MOA. Considering the 155 gr as the fastest available round and it requires 33 MOA anything slower would need up to 36 MOA adjustment. Add that to the 20 for your zero and you are looking at 56 MOA to get you from 100 yds to 1,000 yds.

This leaves absolutely no room if on a cold day you need another 1 or 2 MOA or if you want to go to 1,100 or 1,200 yds. The trouble with 20MOa bases is sometimes the cheaper versions do not give you the full MOA stated on the manufacturers packaging. For that reason i would always recommend paying that bit extra and going for the better brands such as Nears in Canada or Nightforces own brand.
