went out last nite for a leasurely walk with the dobermans while walkin i seen a few rabbits and they were close enough i thought this was a bit strange because rabbits have been very rare the past while around my area

so on the way home i said id stick the lamp out the window of the van for a look i couldnt belive my eyes there was loads of rabbits

so over that direction i went when i was there i realized i took the rifle out of the van earlyer so when i stopped turned on the lamp and 2 rabbits actually started hopping over to the van
i felt seriously sick at this stage and thought it was time for drastic action so i drove around the bush got the dogs out and was sneaking around the corner. got the dogs sighted on the rabbits , and , fech of they went the rabbit took of into the middle of the field i thought they have him now. the rabbit was very fast but the dobs worked well and kept cutting him off the only thing just as they wete about to bite what happened
a cat was hiding in the long grass the dogs looked at the cat as it took of as a result the rabbit got that split second to drop into the hole i couldnt believe it i was gob smacked

Loads of rabbits about ATM - the cold weather last month appears to have had little or no effect on numbers, should be a bumper breeding season:)

we were out tonight around half 7 and didnt see much. saw a good few more come 9 o clock.plenty shooting if you were out after rabbits. it was wayyy to bright though. managed to spot a fox at 9 o clock without turning the lamp on him, thats how bright it was. pity he jumped into the wood though.

are you allowed shoot cats:confused: presume not as they can be someone's pet?

I retract my question! Couldn't resist!
Dobermans mid chase, rabbit gone, cat in his place, mid field, conclusion.?.?
Just don't make dobermans the way the used to!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭One shot on kill

to be honest there was a bit of look they came back to but there fairly well trained cause of the kids around but if any one else called them back forget about it
    they only have one master
its good to see them actually stalk the rabbits before the chase and they work as some team always one attacking from front and the other one circles around
thats the way they hunt and guard the house if any one is around that shouldnt be

there is alot of great breads out there but i find the dobs are very smart, loyal, and protective, but gentle when there is kids around

I often wondered something and the topic of this thread has just reminded me of it.

Could a breed of dog, wth no formal training, pick up the skills not necessarily attributed to that breed.

My reason for asking is simple enough. I have a jack russell and a Rotty. The jack is pure brilliant at ratting. When i moved to my house 4 years ago the lad out the back of us cleared a load of brush/hedge, etc and the place came alive with rats and then mice. After a few months he cleared the lot and every now and then he gets the odd one, but numbers are way, WAY down.

I got the Rotty 6 months after i moved in. She follows the Jack everywhere. I noticed she started to hunt the rats/mice along with the Jack. The two of them make a good team. Anyway, a few weeks ago i noticed she was down th bac of the yard at the far end of the garden and she was locked solid. I walked up slowly and she never budged. I got within 8 feet and a phessie took off ( it was just the other side of the fencing). The Rotty took off after the phessie until it flew out into the field. She went ape trying to get over the fence to it. When i called she came. Ever since i see her and the Jack "patroling" the fence.

I'm half tempted to bring her out on a short walk to she how she would go. Problem is as a "dangerous" breed she needs to be ,uzzled, which would somewhat limit her ability to retrieve if she would. I already know she is not gunshy as i have fired over her before and not a kick out of her.

    What do ya think?

she might think shes a jack russel :D

i'd a rottie and the cat caught a rabbit and gave it to the rottie still alive and the rottie didnt know what to do with it. carried it gently to the front door and gave it to us still alive.

on regards the muzzle you only need it muzzled in public so if you have permission of the farmer its private land so a muzzle isnt needed?
    could be wrong though?

they do need a one really but
once there not bothered with people passin when ye are out walkin she should be ok ive 2 dobs and they never had a muzzel on
but yes they can pick up other skills thats the first time heard of a rottie standind doe buts tgats good i use to have rabbits down the field and the dog would lie in the gardens for hours moven ever so slowly untill he got close enough to bite

my lad will retrieve pigeons pheasants rabbits but he would beat the ground for me
i spent ages gettin my lad to fech with out killing but if i say get him instead of fech he will kill if he catchs
put enough time in and she will do anythin for you and another dog for an example is brill once they dont just want to play all the time
ohye forgot to say if he gets somthin i shoot he digs the teeth way to hard and i cant get him out of it so there could be some limitations

thats my opion and experiances doe

At this stage she has caught and killed her fair share of rats and mice. Surprisingly quick and mible for a big dog.

I know, just i'd be terrified she would run either too far or worse again not come back when called. If seen she might not last too long. Sheep farmers around me, and i wouldn't blame them.

    Just a notion.

watching them run flat out across a field is something special. until they hit a hole and make bits of their leg:( thank god for insurance

why not give her a try on the muzzle and let the land owners know what you're doing

unfortunitly sheep or cattle farmers dont want to know if the dog is friendly or not i undersrand exectly what your saying

but in my experience in training dogs as a rule exercise discipline and then affection in that order always remind her who the boss is and if she doesnt listen put her on the lead while the other dog is running around and make her walk beside you and untill she calms down dont let her off

but for the first ten fifteen mins of a walk you should always let the dog know your in control and for the last ten or fifteen aswell and give them a bit of freedom in between that time

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,697 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

I have no problem with control as she is fully trained from that point of view. i have walked her without the lead, but never from a hunting point of view.

Really tempted now to try her. It could all be a waste of time, but curiosity is getting the better of me.

I know a guy who used to bring an Alsation after Phezzies and swore by her.

She had a great nose and would sniff them out no problem.

Customs use a Springer to find dodgy stuff et al

All dogs came from the same origin 60,000 years ago or so they say!
