Final Year Results

Recently i heard word that in your final year in Maynooth you can choose to repeat exams, even if you don't fail them, to bring up your degree mark. So if you get a 2.2 you can repeat exams you done poorly in to try and bring your grade up to a 2.1.

Has anyone else heard of this or does anyone know if it's true? Needless to say some of my exams didn't go according to plan  so it would be somewhat of a relief if it is.

    Cheers

Yep you heard right. There's some more info on it in this thread.

If you've any other questions about it you should talk to the Academic Advisory Office (01 7083368), or the SU Education Officer (vicepresident@nuimsu.com) :)

Yes you can, I did this.. you can only repeat two I think as if you repeat anymore you will graduate with a single honours degree afaik..

Thanks for the replies! Didn't really believe it at first seeing as some colleges don't even let you repeat in final year! I'll look into it once i get the results.
    Thanks again

Em its 15 credits so 3 modules normally. I did this as did a few of my mates to improve their grade and got my 2.1

    BTW to get a 2.1 its 591

    Repeating for Honours

Honours are not normally awarded in repeat examinations. The following rules apply to
    final year. Students may

repeat modules (once only) up to 15 credits (of the 60 available) in the autumn supplemental examination or in the
examinations in the subsequent year and still retain the entitlement to an honours award, which includes the
contribution from the repeated modules. A student who chooses to repeat a passed module, or to take a new module
in lieu of a passed module, in order to try and improve a result must relinquish the mark first obtained and accept
either 40% or the mark obtained at the second sitting, thus obtaining a lower result on such a module may result in a
lower class of Honours being awarded in both the subject and/or the overall qualification than was originally offered.

Basically it's an average of at least 59.1%. But they make it seem more confusing.

whats the lowest credit one that get in a year to pass.
I heard it was 40 credits

You need 240 credits for a degree. If your course is 3 years you need 80 credits per year, if it's 4 years you need 60 per year.

Credits are non-negotiable, there's not "minimal" amount of credits / modules you have to pass per year - You have to pass them all.

    80 credits ?
I do finance and economics which is a 3year course. But it works out as 60 credits per year.

Same with my arts degree...I hope there isn't a min amount of credits you need, I'm just attempting to pass every module as they come!

    I stand corrected;

    http://ec.europa.eu/education/lifelong-learning-policy/doc/ects/guide_en.pdf

    Page 16;
First cycle qualifications typically include 180-240
    ECTS credits.

    That's crazy.

I do accounting economics and business. each of this has 20credits each 10credits per semester.

I'm definitely right on this one, yes it says 80 credits but that's not possible.

did ya get over 80 credits in year one.

Undergraduate level 8 degrees require 180 credits. 60 per year.

    AE

This is misleading - some degrees only require 180, which is why I included the source; http://ec.europa.eu/education/lifelong-learning-policy/doc/ects/guide_en.pdf Page 16.

I already have 180 credits (BSc) and I don't have my degree yet.

Is yours a 4 year course? Then problem solved.
    60 credits per year.

Mines a 180 credit 4 year course as I did an extra international year of 60 credits.
Normally it would be 3 years with a total of 180 credits.
Bringing my credit total at the end of this year to 240,
yet I still receive a Level 8 Honours degree.

It's just a way of breaking down the demands of each subject within a degree per year and it varies from course to course.

My course is a 3yr course with 60credits per year.

    Finance and economics.

In any undergrad degree (science, arts, business, whatever), you study 60 credits worth of modules a year. You need to get 60 credits to pass the year, so basically you have to pass everything, no exceptions.

Yep you heard right. There's some more info on it in this thread.

Thats madness, most colleges only award a pass grade if you resit or repeat a final year module:eek:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,540 ✭✭✭freeze4real

Just a sec here. I've done accounting exam worth 7.50 credits. I might get 50%. How much credits will I get, as to someone who got 80%.

I think there's a limit to the amount of credit one has to pass 1st year.

Is it possible to repeat an exam if you pass it but only just?

    You both get 7.5 credits.

The percentages come into play when it comes to deciding in your final year whether you get a first, a 2.1, a 2.2, etc.

You have to be bull****ting me. I thought it was only the results in your final year that matters.

I was told by the academic advisory office that my final year results go towards my 2.1/2.2/etc and not 1st and 2nd year. 2nd year results can be counted for your final degree grade but only if your 2nd year results are better than your third year ones.

So basically, its only down to your final year results. :D

Which won't be all that great unless you form a solid foundation i.e. perform well throughout your entire degree.

I have checked with Rose and it is as follows:

Your grade awarded to you degree will be as follows:

100% of your final year mark or 70% of your final year and 30% of your penultimate year, whichever is the higher!
