I just finished playing Dragon Age Origins- fantastic game. Looking to play something similar before the sequel comes out. I've played the Fallout games too. Anyone have any decent recommendations?

In before Retr0 posts a massive list...! Or not so massive as the PS3 is a bit lacking.

Going on what you've said I'd point towards Mass Effect 2 when it comes out at the end of the month, but that might be cutting time a bit short before Dragon Age 2. The PS3 is really lacking RPG's....
Other similar, western RPG's worth a shot would be Oblivion and Demons Souls is brillant but hard as nails!
Folklore is a bit of an underrated gem and might be similar enough to Dragon Age to float your boat.
Valkyria Chronicles is the best RPG on the console (imo), not so similar to Dragon Age though!
Disgaea 3 is a bit niche but fantastic altogether! If you're willing to try something off the wall different, would highly recommend it!

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Martineatworld, might take a look at Mass Effect 1 and Folklore.

No hassle! Mass Effect 1 is Xbox/PC only though...! Only the second one is making it to the PS3. It is a Bioware RPG like Dragon Age though so if you can play it, do!

There's always Mass Effect 2. I'd hold out for the PS3 release since I'm pretty sure there'll be a game of the year edition for the PC with all DLC included.

You are correct, it does include the DLC. And it's a magnificent game, go for it!

Any chance you know if there's a goty edition with all the DLC heading to 360?

anyone got any experience with white knight chronicles?? Housemate asked me...

White Knight Chronicles is a pretty good (if average) JRPG. It's pretty standard story-wise (poor orphan dude must save princess together with his friends and some old dude who shows up to help) and a little slow to start gameplay wise. The battle system is kind of like an MMO take on an action RPG, so you equip your character with commands and then select them and they execute them in real time, but you have a cool down period between attacks so some things can take a while to kill. The online quest system is a lot of fun too, although it does become a bit of a grind later on.

But hey, it has HD towns and a world map so that means you'd like it, right? :pac:

I'd say it's worth playing, especially considering it's sub €20 online now.

Probably yes but as i said it's for my housemate!

I'm just yanking yer chain! :pac:

I did enjoy the game, I finished it twice so that I could get all the New Game + armour for use in the online mode. I think that once you're able to change class and level up a bit (and thus unlock some better skills) the game is a lot of fun to play. It's just kind of strange playing a battle system that isn't quite turn based and isn't quite an action RPG. The game has some good music, the voice acting is pretty good at times and it is a pretty charming game. As for the story, let's just say having played the first game I definitely want to play the sequel - although generic it does get good at the end!

Just saw this! I'd say they'll release an Ultimate Edition when all the DLC is out, like they did with Dragon Age. Bioware have already said that there's more coming, but they'd want to release it a bit before 3 comes out!

Sorry for the bump, but i was just looking for an rpg to play for the next week, while i'm layed up after stupid knee surgery. Was thinking of either White Knight Chronicles, Resonance of Fate or Final Fantasy XIII. Whichever one has the best story really, ideally with decent characters and no (or not many) annoying kids.

Or any other suggestions you could think of.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Final Fantasy XIII is a decent game despite the haters. However if you don't want annoying kids then the start will annoy you although the characters get better and the ending is retarded. I'd probably say go for Resonance of Fate although it's Tri-Ace so again don't expect a stellar story. The battle system is supposedly fantastic however it's not well explained and takes ages before it clicks.

what he said:P i'd say if you are not some jrpg hardcore player, get FF13, the biggest budget jrpg to date i think, at least you will be amazed by the HD graphics. you should be able to get it very cheap now.

retro u play RoF yet?? i really wanna see what do people think of the whole story lol

I'd say the best two RPGs on PS3 so far are Valkyria Chronicles and Ar tonelico 3, Valkyria sounds like it'd be more your kinda thing so play that if you havent already

Resonance of Fate is alright, but it doesnt have much story, you pretty much just get a little bit at the start and end of each chapter, it's mostly about the battles.

WKC is only half a single player story, if you havent already bought it you might as well wait for WKC2 which contains the full story and comes out next month. It's more geared towards online play than a traditional single player RPG in any case

They've been in a bad state for awhile now but I thought this was common knowledge?

since we're on the topic of development cycles in Square which gets debated an awful lot when Versus is talked about, here's the story behind the delay (and thus the delay behind KH3):

In 2006 SE announced FNC, however they didn't have the engine to make the games til 2008 (hence why we got only CGI videos for a long time). In 2008 Crystal Tools was finally created and stabilised (though still not fully).
People in Japan were so hyped over FF 13 though, that most of the Versus team was assigned to FF 13 to speed up the development so that the game could be released soon.

Only after the game was finished in 2009 did the team start working on Versus properly. Yet again that is why we only saw CGI trailers till Jump Festa that year showed gameplay beind closed doors (which was commented as being really buggy etc). In June or July 2010 we finally saw first ingame images in Famitsu and then a short trailer with no HUD during TGS 2010. In 2011 we finally saw a full gameplay trailer which looked amazing (though it was only an alpha code for the game). This is basically around a year and a half from the time proper development got under way and Nomura had already said the graphics got an overhaul in the newer build.

So as of now the game is in development for 2 years and will be going to full/mass production meaning FF 13-2 is nearing its completion and team from FF13-2 will be assigned to simply finish off the production of Versus.

Apparently it all stems from the way square enix set themselves up and reorganised themselves a few years ago. They were sick of all their really talented people joining square and then leaving after a few months when they get poached by other companies so they decided to make each employee so specialised that they wouldn't be poached. It got so ridiculous that they have a 'cobblestone' girl who's only job it is is to create the textures for cobblestones in all their games. It ended up that square became really counterproductive due to this strategy and are trying to sort themselves out again.

So its annoying at the start and **** at the end.

Is it true that at least half the game is running down a tunnel between cutscenes?

i'd say more than 50% of the game lol

the only place that didnt make me feel like that is the 'world map' gran pulse.

So, SE is pretty messed up atm eh.

Oh right, thanks for that. Everytime I asked on various forums on why these things were happening with SE I just the usual 'the merger messed them up' or 'Wada is an idiot' sort of reply so it's nice to know what's really up.

As Retr0 said, battle system is probably the best in the series. Also graphics are brilliant. The game is basically split in two halves- a linear half where there's a lot of character development (and with a few most memorable scense in FF history, in my opinion) but it can be a bit annoying since the character development is driven only by the cast of 6 characters. Second is a non-linear almost like world map progression without much story happening (kinda like the journey to the capital in FF XII)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭Naphiel

You all actually liked the battle system? I found it dull for the majority of the game and frustrating for the very few fights that were actually a challenge.

I'd say X's or the ATB system was the best.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Thought the ATB system was far too basic. For me FFX and FFV's job system are the best even if the job system is shamelessly stolen from dragon quest.

I don't mean to be troublesome, but is that not a bit of an oxymoron?
As in its non-linear in the way a linear section of FF12 was.

I dunno, i thought that once you get accessed to the three roles for each character then the battle system starts being great. There's a lot of tactics that goes into the fights, especially when you're trying to get the 5 starts etc. I also love the later marks because it's there where the battle system actually forces you to use a great deal of strategy. Plus the Cid fight was great too, using the Paradigm shifts was pretty much essential.

haha sorry should have explained that better, what I meant was here too they'll tell you that you need to get from point A to B, but in between there's huge areas with tons of exploration and marks.
