Been keeping an eye on here for a while now and seen lots of good advice and lots of shockingly bad advice... but also lots of sniping about this type of approach is better than this and so on..

Anyways.. i'm curious about the people that actually do know what they are talking about so list 3( or more if you like) people in the world of health/fitness/s&c/strength/sports/nutrition that you think know what they are talking about ?

    Just an idea..

My 3 would be .. 1) Mark Rippetoe 2) Dan John 3) jon berardi ( lots more but that will do for now..i'll probably get slated but such is life) :o

The funny thing about Boards is that when you know just a little bit more than other people on the board, you are very quickly assumed to be an expert!

I totally agree about Will though.

Number 2 is ok, number 3 is a great coach, but that number 1 is a charlatan.

me, me and me. But it only works for me. Thing about advise is it doesn't suit everyone, what works for one person may not work for many others. What you read here and anywhere else for that matter try it out and if it works for you great.

After years of various sports training I know what works me, hard lessons learnt along the way but it was sure is a great journey.

    1) Medhi
    2) Dave Castro
    3) Me.

No seriously though. There are tonnes of guys out there who know their stuff.
Just not all of them are as vocal on the net.
And many of them are vocal but don't really put stuff out that is actually useful or at least of broad use.

Doesn't mean they don't know the business.
Maybe some of the best don't have as much time to write books or blogs or make DVDs.

I mean I could arbitrarily list 3 guys who's stuff I like, but leave a few others off. And like there are guys who operate around specific sports, or sports conditioning or nutrition...

    Lads..
Lots of good suggestions already. hope it continues.cheers.

d'Oracle.. i fully agree with you on that last point don't worry. just though it'd be an interesting thread to see what people were checking out these days is all.
personally i'm struggling to keep it just to 3 people because the interwebs really can't do justice to alot of the highest quality coaches/trainers/nutritionists etc..

I dont know anything about Poliquin. But the fact that he trained the man who is responsible for Paul McShane making the Ireland team made me want to stop looking...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭d'Oracle

I have never read anything of him, mainly cos of the vitriolic abuse he gets.

But that in fairness is probably a good sign.
The only thing I can think of that is anything like a reason not to listen is Will Heffernans bugbear about him saying he can get a female to 12 pullups in 12 weeks or something every time.

TBH its fairly obvious from my log that I read too much anyway.
So I will probably leave him out.

TBH saying that you train Paul McShane when really you are only letting your cousin's wife's brother train at your gym for all of the 2 weeks that he is home in Ireland during the summer for the holidays is a bit of a stretch of the imagination by anyone's standards:pac::pac::pac:

I can see why people don't like poliquin but I can't see how you could not respect him for his knowledge and his training of Olympians (albeit a good few years ago)
He has more knowledge than everyone here with the possible exception of will.
Also, he doesn't pretend to have re invented the wheel, but he has brought some training methods to the masses. GBC, german volume training etc.

I'm very busy today so won't have the time or inclination to justify thIs post!

That's interesting, considering how well transform and will interact.

My 3 would probably be: Will, because I've actually asked him questions and got answers. Bill Starr, because he lifted a lot of heavy stuff over his head. Mark Rippetoe, because he made me squat.

    Shoes made me squat.

Ergo Mark Rippetoe is as useful as a shoe.

I'v been scouring fitness/nutrition related websites religiously for about 5 years now. I've gone through every site and just about every well known program out there. I started off with Starting Strength and made great gains. then I did DeFranco's when my gains slowed down. Then I did Stronglifts and GOMAD after I got an injury and wanted to get strong again quickly. I just got fat from all the milk.
So I wanted to get fit and ripped again so I turned to Nate Green. I ordered his book, believed everything he had to say then in time realised he was a bit of an idiot. I only started getting back into good shape again when I discovered Lyle McDonald, through Will Heffernan.

Nowadays these are the only sites I visit.

    1)Lyle McDonald's Bodyrecomposition
2)JCD Fitness (One of Lyle's acolytes but he's ripped so noobs will probably actually listen to him)
    3) Martin Berkhan's Leangains

I visit here just out of interest and because it's funny sometimes. Although there are knowledgeable people here too, namely Hanley, Will, G'em, Transform.

I wish I could have had a mentor who knew what I know now. I could have achieved in 1 year what has taken me 5 years.

I would say the worst advice I'v ever followed was Chad Waterbury's 100 push ups and 50 pull ups a day 4-week program. Supposed to add inches to your chest. I was so weak when I got back to proper lifting. My rule no.1 for noobs would be stay away from T-Nation.
