Anyone know where the http://www.it-netsoc.ie site is gone?

The remaining committee has voluntarily shut down the soc due to structuring issues - I believe an EGM is scheduled for early Febuary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭Ziycon

    Ah that is disappointing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,073 ✭✭✭Devilman40k

Seeing as they have pulled the site down, how to they propose getting the information on this meeting out to all the members ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭macrubicon

As it's an EGM it will have to be posted up on the notice boards around the college.

ok...but they made a requirement for alumni to attend also...now as much as I loved my time at ITT I have no intention of travelling out to Tallaght apart from the evening of the EGM. Is there any other way to inform the alumni where/when this will be held?

And seeing as the current committee couldn't organise an all the beer you can drink bash in a brewery, could someone more trustworthy do it!

The Alumni requirement was for a different matter I think - given the current status of the soc the EGM will trump the original meeting between the college and the admins / committee

I'd imagine that one will happen after things get back on the air.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭Ziycon

So much work was done to get it back up and running when I was in the college would be a waste to see it all disappear.

The "Current" committee where given time to clean up some stuff on the server and to meet with the college.

They failed to meet the deadlines or to even acknowledge the requests.
Obviously the college didn't like that nobody was responsible for maintaining the servers.
So they pulled the plug in December pending the creation of a new committee in the next semester.

    Stay tuned...

Slight clarification - the Current committee informed the college that they were shutting down services in December. The plug is still in - but given that the committee has basically said we are abandoning this for now by closing down services the college did what it had to do (for now) and removed the service.

The college stands by waiting and willing to restore services.

Thats ridiculous, when is the EGM?

in the event of it closing down for good, would it be possible to migrate the site to another server thats not associated with the college?

IT Tallaght what a joke, an institute of technology without a functional computer society. I'd love to be attending an open day there to hear peoples reactions to that. Can cross that one off the list.

I still don't understand why the site was temporarily shut down. It didn't look like the existing committee did anything anyway while the site was up and running so whats the difference now. WHAT A JOKE!

I really can't believe this has gone on this long.

It's hardly the college's fault that the society has not worked out. It's the students that run it not the college.

That's exactly why it was shut down - no one was responsible for it. It was the outgoing committee that took the decision - not the college.

I don't understand it being shut down for the above reason, its not as if it wasn't being used, There was quite an active community on it, I could totally understand it if no one was using it.

There are plenty of societies in the college that nobody is interested in and the members don't put the effort in, I've signed up to societies were I had one night/day out then not heard anything after that, one year later you see the same society signing people up, so how come no one shuts them down. Then you have the netsoc, A society that actually has use and who offered lots, an active forum community, disk space, web hosting, tutorials and loads more, ok so the current members are useless, over time new members will come in who actually give a dam, but thats still no reason to shut down something that has a use and is being used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭macrubicon

By it's very nature a computing society with it's own servers etc. is a different entity from an "activity" soc. Their servers are granted exemption from firewall rules for instance and part of the deal was that there were people nominated by the committee (admins) to be the point of contact with the college on any issues that arise.

The committee failed to nominate anyone and all the existing admins were/are alumni so while the site was up there was no one looking after anything.

Given the committees notice to cease operations the college restricted access to comply with the committees request.

The college cannot have servers operating on it's network with no one responsible for them either so it was all was coming to a head but the committee decided to close up shop before that happened.

That said - and I have said this before - the college stands ready to open up things again once the committee sort themselves out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

The servers could have easily been exploited if left on the network, and if no-one stepped up to take control, then they should have been taken down.
A pity, because there was so much work done setting it up a few years ago and getting a few nice features.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,473 ✭✭✭kerplun k

    Suppose. I see your point.

who elects these members, are they even still attending the college?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭macrubicon

The Current committee are all current students.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭Ziycon

So is there any word on the EGM or has it taken place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭macrubicon

Nothing yet. Semester only started yesterday so there might be something in the coming days.

Or the committee might just let it die away....

If you are interested in it, or helping out with it, maybe you should hunt down the current members and put a push on it. If there are people interested in it, there will be more of an effort from current members to do do something about it!

Can't help out as I'm out of the college now and I've no idea who is meant to be running it now to 'push' them.

    Hi one and all,

You should all know who i am due to my user name.

Current update with netsoc is as follows......Nothing is happening.

No interest From any other committee members other then myself to keep it alive. I cant do it myself.....anyone who was actually on the site should know my reasons why.

Since we had to beg people to come onto the current committee due to complete lack of interest there is no hope of getting a new one.

I know there is demand for a net soc in Tallaght however this demand is coming from alumni and not from any students within the college.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭Ziycon

So thats it then, nothings going to happen this year?! I would offer my help to keep it going but due to me being alumni its not possible. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 jimjimcharoo

    Thats unfortunate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,473 ✭✭✭kerplun k

Any chance of moving the website to a server thats not associated with the college, instead have it act as an unofficial forum for the college and have it open to all current students and alumni of IT Tallaght, basically just use it until new members come along who can actually run a society.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 jimjimcharoo

    There is this place :P

I have hosting i never use, i don't mind setting up a forum.
But whats the point if its just going to be as dead as Netsocs

if you think its going to in any way active then we we might as well put the effort into restarting netsocs forum

Also, as a side note, I was talking to a lecturer tonight who was also surprised that netsoc had shut down. also mentioned that if someone had mentioned to him that netsoc was in trouble he wouldn't have minded helping out.

there is alot of untapped resources in the college people.
Netsoc can live.. you just have to get the finger out

Edit: also as a co-incidence, i was talking to the founding member of Comp soc today He was very surprised it *was* still going
also agrees its a shame its gone now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,473 ✭✭✭kerplun k

Yeah I suppose your right, theres probably no point really. Its a shame thats its gone.

A first year you say - I would suggest you get a few like minded people together and go see Tim! Just needs a few people to kick start it all again.

I have the email address list of all the Netsoc members that were active on a forum and would be happy to help anyone interested in getting the society back up and running organise an AGM.

Needs to be an active student movement though.

And alumni support (welcome or not)?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 TheHig

Alumni make the site more valuable and so on, but they can't have a say in the running of the society or voice an opinion at an AGM (valid students only).
Alumni assistance is appreciated in the form of members who contribute and Administrators who keep the technical side of things operational; but the actual resurrection and day-to-day running of the society falls to current active students.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,893 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

What would you need current students to do to get this back up? especially this close to exam time?

It's not what I need, it's what Tim needs. The society was, from a technical standpoint, in a decent state. What wasn't happening was the on-campus presence, new user signups and so on.

Hypothetically you go to Tim and he gives you the OK to resurrect the society, the practical things that you could do this semester would be limited. You would need to hold some kind of AGM to get the new committee approved. Other than that, the technical side of things would hopefully come back online. Macrubicon is the one in charge here. What you would be doing would be bringing the soc back so you can try and do a sign-up day next semester really.

Once things are technically back up and running, there are some things that the Administrative guys, i.e. Me, Jim, Seaders, Cyrus and Scott could get to doing to try and finish the improvements we were working on when everything was shut down. However who knows if they'll still want to be involved? I am interested, but I'm also busy with my Thesis writeup at the moment.

There's also the option of reformatting a machine and starting fresh. New forum, new members, erase everything. It's not my preferred choice to throw away years of work, but it is really up to whatever committee exists.

I'm a current evening student in the IT Management course - I'd definitely be interested in getting involved and helping out.

PM me if my help is wanted :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 jimjimcharoo

I'm sure plenty of the previous netsoc members would be more that willing to help out.
The last netsoc didn't shut down because of lack of interest from the members
Just lack of interest from the people who where responsible for running it :p

I'll be taking next semester off because I can't do or have already done the modules coming up and then I'll be back again to finish off my masters.

So I'll be around with nothing to do next semester anyway and would be more than happy to give a helping hand

Anyone heard anything about the netsoc being revived or is it dead forever?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭macrubicon

nothing - it's as gone as it was last year....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭Ziycon

No move on this!? Still dead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭macrubicon

Rumours abound of the resussitation but we wait to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 jimjimcharoo

Ziycon i imagine any netsoc that did start back up would be for current students only
I reckon our time has passed at this stage

still it would be good to hear its back up and running

Well - I can confirm a preliminary meeting this afternoon with some interested parties...

I understand that but as the previous netsoc did, they could accommodate for alumni.
