    More Bird Deaths...
    Mysterious bird deaths hit Sweden

_50669230_birds.jpg One eyewitness said he had seen hundreds of dead birds in the street

Dozens of dead birds have been found lying in a residential street in Sweden, days after thousands of birds fell to their deaths in the US.
Police in the town of Falkoeping have told Swedish media that between 50 and 100 jackdaws had died.
Some are said to have been hit by cars but others have no visible injuries.
Parallels have been drawn with the mysterious death of about 3,000 red-winged blackbirds in the US state of Arkansas on New Year's Eve.
Veterinary officials told Swedish radio that the case in Falkoeping was rare although they said there could be a number of reasons such as "disease or poisoning".
    _50669227_sweden_falkoeping05111.gif
Aftonbladet newspaper quoted one resident, Drilon Hulaj, who said that as he drove home late on Tuesday night the street in front of him was dotted with "hundreds of dead birds".
Mr Hulaj said he had been immediately reminded of the events in the town of Beebe, Arkansas. Scientists have said the blackbirds there many have been affected by fireworks.
There have been no reports of fireworks or storms in Falkoeping at the time.

    It's not just birds.

Millions of dead fish surfaced in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay in the U.S., Tuesday, while similar unexplained mass fish deaths occurred across the world in Brazil and New Zealand. On Wednesday, 50 birds were found dead on a street in Sweden. The news come after recents reports of mysterious massive bird and fish deaths days prior in Arkansas and Louisiana.

The Baltimore Sun reports that an estimated 2 million fish were found dead in the Chesapeake Bay, mostly adult spot with some juvenile croakers in the mix, as well. Maryland Department of the Environment spokesperson Dawn Stoltzfus says "cold-water stress" is believed to be the culprit. She told The Sun that similar large winter fish deaths were documented in 1976 and 1980.

ParanaOnline reports that 100 tons of sardines, croaker and catfish have washed up in Brazilian fishing towns since last Thursday. The cause of the deaths is unknown, with an imbalance in the environment, chemical pollution, or accidental release from a fishing boat all suggested by local officials.

In New Zealand, hundreds of dead snapper fish washed up on Coromandel Peninsula beaches, many found with their eyes missing, The New Zealand Herald reports. A Department of Conservation official allegedly claims the fish were starving due to weather conditions.

While all three events are likely unrelated, they come after recent reports of mysterious dead birds falling from the sky in both Arkansas and Louisiana. Thousands of dead birds were found in Beebe, Arkansas on New Year's Eve, and a few days later, around 500 of the same species were found 300 miles south in Louisiana. A Kentucky woman also reported finding dozens of dead birds scattered around her home. In the days prior to New Year's, nearly 100,000 fish surfaced in an Arkansas river 100 miles west of Beebe. Officials are now saying that fireworks likely caused the Arkansas bird deaths, and power lines may be to blame for the death of the birds in Louisiana.

Some remain skeptical of the explanations. Dan Cristol, a biology professor and co-founder of the Institute for Integrative Bird Behavior Studies at the College of William & Mary, told the AP that he was hesitant to believe fireworks were to blame unless "somebody blew something into the roost, literally blowing the birds into the sky."

Wednesday, officials in Sweden reported the finding of 50 dead birds on a street, suggesting that cold weather or fireworks were the likely culprit.

Bird deaths and fish kills at smaller numbers aren't all that uncommon, though the size and proximity of some of the recent events have led people to allege their relation, though officials deny the frequency of these wildlife deaths as being anything other than coincidence.

In August of 2010, tens of thousands of dead fish were reported washing ashore in two separate occasions, 200 miles apart on the East Coast.

CLICK HERE to let us know what you think caused the mass bird deaths. While many of the animals are undergoing tests that could take weeks to yield comprehensive results, some officials attest that the true cause behind these mysterious deaths may never fully be known.

It's such a pity they cancelled that great show.
    It would have thrived now.
Maybe the writers had a Flash Forward of their own. Dun dun dun.

Id imagine that the unusually bad weather over the last month, coupled with unique incidents that possibly wouldve happened anyway, and the fact that fireworks etc would have been used alot in some places for New years and disturbed alot of birds, would account for the majority of the stories.

The fact that its small populations of animals being affected, and not full communities or larger-scale populations would seem to indicate that theres nothing more suspicous behind it!

(this is just based on a quick look at that map and the animals affected)

If you look at it, it has happened all across the globe. In the north where its winter, its understanable in places like UK, Sweden and cold parts of USA.

But how would you explain the southern hemisphere where its summer and the warmer places like Caribbean, Florida and all.

Also fireworks killing over 5000 birds in Arkansas?!

And its many different types of birds and fish being affected all around the globe. Like if its just birds, maybe some sorta avian flu might make sense. But what about the fish then? One place, industrial pollution might make sense, but its in all corners of the world!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭Horse_box

The thing is, people probably find loads of dead fish/birds everyday and nothing would be made of it. Now since the Arkansas incident was so widely publicised, people are reporting everything and making it sound worse than it is?

That said, it does all seem a bit weird

The fact the birds dies at night would play a big part in it, birds don't handle darkness to well.

I've often heard that if you block off the light on a caged bird it think it's night time and automatically goes to sleep. I myself have heard birds in trees beside lamp posts sing all night long thinking it's day time. I've often wondered if they tried to fly away from the lamp post would they just fall asleep mid air and now I have my scientific evidence that they would.

tbh, some of those marks say 'scores of dead fish', I think that is clutching at straws, a few dozen dead fish turning up is hardly noteworthy?

^They say hundreds and some say thousands. You don't know how accurate the news reports are and they could be exaggerating.

Birds usually go to sleep at night. When the sky goes down. Although you could argue the city lights are disrupting their sleep cycles.

But it still doesn't make sense. They were fine all alone. Then why suddenly hundreds and thousands of birds fall out of the sky? I don't think there are many incidences in the past of such type. Especially not on such a global scale.

It could be the first signs of a global climate shift of some sorts. The birds and fishes can't handle the changing climate patterns anymore...

Could also maybe have something to do with magnetic pole shifts. Scientists have been saying that the magnetic poles of the earth are shifting. Birds (don't know about fishes) use the earths magnetic field to navigate (don't know about all birds but pigeons definitely do), the shift in the magnetic field could be causing these birds to become disorientated and fall off the sky...

I'm not a scientist so I really can't say much about this.

Regarding the 5,000 birds, here's a quote from the CNN website.

Karen Rowe, an ornithologist for the game and fish commission, said the incident is not that unusual and is often caused by a lightning strike or high-altitude hail.
A strong storm system moved through the state earlier in the day Friday. Officials also speculated that fireworks shot by New Year's revelers in the area might have caused severe stress in the birds.

Blackbirds do not normally fly at night, and it was not immediately clear what caused the odd behavior. Loud noises were reported shortly before the birds began falling, according to the game and fish commission.

^Many birds use the earths magnetic field to navigate. Its like an internal compass they have. I think fishes use this too but I'm not sure about fishes.

Also the magnetic field of earth is caused by the motion of the molten iron core of the planet. Due to the motion of this core, the magnetic field is not the same in all places and the magnetic poles are also not stationary. They have moved in the past and they are moving all the time.

very strange. could be the wheater or even the solar eclipse, some animals use the sun or moon as guides for migration
