I could get my bud Smitty to help you open it. He lives in Portlaoise but is been released moving home next week. Nice lad, but jaysus whatever you do keep him away from safes squirrels.

Never mind that safe I think you should put all your effort into finding the safe that the key you have belongs to!!

Drill an 8mm hole through the middle of the door. This will tell you the thickness of the door and allow you to fill the safe with water through the same hole. Then cut a square out of the door with an angle grinder and remove the contents. They will not be damaged by the sparks from the grinder as they will be under water.
    Signed.

If it's a good safe then there will be a glass plate behind the door to prevent drilling. The glass plate holds back spring loaded locking pins. When the drill shatters the glass these pins will lock the door and the key won't open them. Probably doesn't apply to this one, but if it does then you've just painted your self into a corner.

    Brilliant thread

We need to know what it is.
You know the Irish Crown Jewels went missing in 1907 and were never recovered ;)

I thought we sold them to Russia or was that later on ?

Nope, the new Russian Republic wanted a loan from the Free State goverment so Mick Collins arranged it and the Russian Crown Jewels used as security.
They were left in a safe and forgotton about in Ireland and later found and sent back to Russia in 1950

    Maybe you're thinking of this?
The Irish Crown Jewels have never been found

Come on OP, what's in that safe? :p
And is there another safe with that key you have?

    Unbelievable riches found.

    Have moved to Cayman Islands.

    Won't be coming back.

But seriously, things move slowly in the Zag household. If there was definitely something in there I would be chasing it a lot faster, but it's on the back burner at the moment.

The locksmiths said they don't do safes but passed on details of a safe specialist. Will be contacting him shortly.

I have to presume that the idea of drilling a hole and filling it with water was a joke. First, it's a safe, so you can't just drill a hole. It's supposed to be secure. Second, as someone pointed out, if you could drill a hole and filled it with water then all those valuable £500 notes would go all soggy and the share certificates might need a spin in the drier. If they were Irish bank share certs I mightn't be too worried.

As for the Irish Crown Jewels - the house was only built in the 1950s I think, so while it's possible they are in there, I reckon it's unlikely.

But was the house deliberately built on top of the safe as a way to hide it? :p

Get one of theses in the hire shop, then angle grind it open slowly so as to minimize heat transfer.

    Further update.

I'm going to have a poke around and see if I can find any other similar keys floating about. At least I know what size & shape I need as the other key fits the slot perfectly.

Good...careful not to wake the home owners :D:D

My guess is that the guy took a dump in the safe as a bit of a practical joke.

And the air tight seal may have preserved its gooey richness and a smell that has only matured with age.. Brace yourself.

    The man came today.

But we weren't able to open the safe. It seems to be quite seized. We're going to try again next week after the WD40 has had a chance to work.

Sorry, Michael, I left out some of the detail yesterday. I did try the WD40 previously (following your sugestion), but it now looks like *both* keys were the wrong ones, so I was never going to get anywhere with them.

The lock has been picked, the cylinders are aligned, etc . . . but the retaining-bolt-thing won't budge. It's now swimming in WD40 and we'll see later on during the week if it will move. If not, then it's the drill (according to the safe man).

OP, any chance of a photo or two of this thing?

My brother can open any safe. He used to work in Chubb. He told me he will open it free of charge for you in about 6 months with Good Behaviour. LOL

Finally got it opened today. The basic inputs were a large amount of WD40, a lot of elbow grease, time and of course the correct key.

When we got it opened, there was nothing in it other than a number of dead bugs, some dust & a small piece of paper. No treasure map, bah.

The real problem was that the locking elements had rusted and required a huge amount of effort and WD40 to move.

Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions. I'll try and put some photos up for reference later so that people who need to open a similar safe have an idea of what they're up against.
