Well St Patricks day was my first big test and i'm happy to report myself and the wife passed with flying colours. We spent a good 5 hours in the pub with friends going in and out of the smoking area and leaving us alone at the table.
This actually helped us as they would come back to the table with a vile smell on them.

At 8.30 this evening i will be five weeks off them

Been smoking full time for about 25 years and doing this cold turkey. Off them a week yesterday. It's going great and I'm surprised how easy I'm finding it. Basically have had a cold since Xmas so hadn't been enjoying them lately and had cut down a lot over the last year or 2. Breathing is way easier now and energy levels are up. All in all I'm delighted :)

I did the exact same way as yourself im 14 months off them now. I still have the odd day that i want one. But then i smell friends whi are still smokers & i say no way am i giving in to them.

I've just completed my first 7 days as a non smoker. I had been been smoking for 19 years. I'm feeling grand so far. Last night I had my first glass of wine since I quit. I thought that it would be harder, but it wasn't too bad. When I did get the cravings, I took out the knitting needles! I've also found playing a game on the phone works as a good distraction when the cravings hit. Best of luck everyone. Keep it up.

Sarah again. I'm just here with an update. It's been two months now and I'm now a confirmed non smoker. Easier than I thought. Best of luck everyone.

Well as far as I'm concerned I'm totally done with them. I had my birthday party on Saturday night. I spent the night in the pub drinking lots and then went back to a friends house until 5 in the morning and not a smoke was had. My hangover wasn't too bad yesterday and today I'm right as rain. Before it used to take me 2 sometimes three days to feel normal after a heavy session and I'm sure it's down to not waking up yesterday and having a smoke first thing. Six weeks off them tomorrow!

My son was almost involved in a very serious accident last week - he is ok thanks be to God. If ever there was a reason to go back on the fags, that was it, but I realise now that would have been an excuse not a reason. A choice - not a necessity like it would have been before.

Sorry to hear that and glad he is ok.

When my first seriously stressful life event came and went after Id quit I reflected on it and realised that smoking actually adds a layer of stress to the situation with the annoying "when can I go for a smoke" thoughts.

    Well done staying off them.

I was a bit puzzled about how you could smell the nicotine etc after a day or two, 'til I read the 2nd Para. If the draw of cig's get too strong, think of something with a stronger pull. Cheer's and good luck.

Coming up on 9 months for me now but still find it a bit hard when out drinking, I don't know if that nagging craving for a smoke will ever go away when I'm drunk??

Another week done making it 7 now! And what I am especially proud of this week is the fact that I spent 3 nights in Amsterdam on a bender with the wife, and not a cigarette was had.

    Yes, it will go away.
It's been 15 months for me (this board was a great help for the first few months), and I cannot imagine having one, even when I'm having a drink. Occasionally, I'll stand outside somewhere with my friend, or my dad, while they have one, and I only feel revulsion, never the urge to join them.
This feeling has increased the longer I have not smoked.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I can't get over how good I smell:pac:
I've also taken up running. Yesterday I did a full lap of my local park 3.8 Kms without stopping. All I can say to that is Praise The Lord or Mohammad or some deity because I am actually a new man. This is the fittest and healthiest I've been in years and I'm loving it.
    8 weeks off them yesterday!

Hi and well done to everybody!!! I was on here a year ago, after giving up using champix but I went bk on them after four months. Well anyway, I bought an e-cig last week, started using it on Sunday and found I was barely using it so stopped it on Tuesday and no probs whAtsoever!!! Delighted with myself and can't believe how easy it's been. Feel confident that this is the time I know now what having one here and there leads to.. Had an awful long craving on Thursday evening but didn't give in. Feel quite dizzy a lot of the time but I'm sure that will pass soon. So,day 6 off them and day 4 off the e-cig too!!

Oh yeah, I forgot about this!!

I bought myself gifts with the smoking money for the first few months off them, little things, make up and vanity items - but I got a great kick buying perfume because now I can wear it and not feel its wasted by me smelling like an ashtray.

Well done everyone, keep it up, its one year and 3 and a half months for me now, and Im still delighted about it. I find myself walking past people smoking thinking "yuck, I used to do that" and I mentally associate the sensation of choking with the smell.

I hear you about the perfume, I took a shine to a certain perfume which was difficult to get, having finally got it after I stopped smoking, I now realise why so many people comment on it. Even better still, I don't need to use as much of it now.:)

Well done to you too, 1 year and three months.

Im off them nearly 13 months!! :O)

If you quit smoking right now, at 03:00 PM (EST) on April 14, 2013, here is what will begin to happen immediately:
    • 3:20 PM (in 20 minutes): Your heart rate drops.
    • 3:00 AM (in 12 hours): The carbon monoxide (a gas that can be toxic) in your blood drops to normal.
    • Apr. 28, 2013 - Jul. 14, 2013 (in 2 weeks to 3 months): Your heart attack risk begins to drop and your lungs are working better.
    • May. 14, 2013 - Jan. 14, 2014 (in 1 to 9 months): Your coughing and shortness of breath decrease and your lungs start to function better, lowering your risk of lung infection.
    • Apr. 14, 2014 (in 1 year): Your risk for heart disease is half that of a smoker's.
    • Apr. 14, 2018 (in five years): Your risk of having a stroke is the same as someone who doesn't smoke.
    • Apr. 14, 2023 (in 10 years): Your risk of dying from lung cancer is half that of a smoker's. Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas also decreases.
    • Apr. 14, 2028 (in 15 years): Your risk of heart disease is now the same as someone who doesn't smoke.
