IMO, It's a pretty boring sport to be honest. Overpriced hairdressers kicking a ball around for 90 minutes. And the way some people go on for their team, it's like they fcuking cured cancer if they won! Are you trying to fit in "with the lads" ? :)

Asking a question like that is like asking somebody why they prefer tea over coffee and vice versa but this is AH , not the soccer forum .

I used to like watching it a lot more.

Increasingly it just seems to reflect the worst about us - look at the faces of fans in the stands - angry, hateful and vicious.

I won't even start on the players.

    Or Sepp.

I'd have the odd bet on it but i can't stand the sport. All a lot of mates talk about so it's hard to escape it.

Soccer does not explicitly promote homosexuality, if it does at all, but in America, it is regarded as a “girly sport.” …The low-impact image of soccer makes it appear less manly and boring to the casual sports fan. In addition, the phenomenon of “diving” in soccer has only added to the “gay” image of soccer. Diving is the act of tripping over by an offensive player with little to no contact from his defender in order to win a free kick. Players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, and Arjen Robben add dramatics such as loud screams and crying which further emasculate the sport. Homosexuality has always been a controversial issue that Americans have tried to avoid, and a sport like soccer that does not appear to be “manly enough” has failed to attract attention from the US.

Don't shoot the messenger now. I have no feelings either way about anything said in the above article. I just thought it might be informative and relevant to this discussion.:)

I'd agree with this. Also the standard has dropped greatly in recent years imo.
Despite this it's still the most enjoyable sport to watch. There's drama, skill (for the most part), and a reasonable scoring system, not to mention the best athmosphere at any sport, once you look past the aforementioned hatefullness of some fans.

It is. It's crazy to be honest, there's only been one admitted homosexual professional soccer/football player afaik and he later killed himself. Just goes to show what a terribly homophobic culture there is around the sport even in this day and age.

I like soccer but large parts of the game are pretty boring because its so low scoring. Thats why it will never take off fully in America

quiet you .. who'd you quote?

i couldn't possibly listen to the american argument. grid iron the guys look like overpacked lunchboxes, whats the purpose of the padding? 'real' rugby playing men don't require it, the illusion of more masculinity thats rife in america. also why are they so **** at rugby, which they should be a dab hand at.. ignorance. everything is in place but that stain on their mentality. n cheerleaders wtf.. oh stacy is egging you on; can't dissapoint the college girls in mini skirts let the resultant testosterone catapult you over the line. even Ice Hockey offsets its immense skill n respect i'd have by permitting a player to knock another player out of his stride by picking an actual fight with him, which is permitted - n permitted to continue. that there is fcuking nuts n says a lot for 'fair play' when you can literally punch a form player out of the game, cos he's doing better than you. sore loser ftw :/

soccer's the no.1 global game its basic anyone to play its all action.. few stoppages anyhow. know all the bad stuff already; tormented myself with it in recent years didn't enjoy the WC whatsoever. i still recall when people pushed for pro football out of a love for the game, cos it couldn't have been the wages. changed mid-90s n continues to spiral well beyond respect. and ireland qualifying for 3 major finals back to back, that played a part.. poorest team in 40yrs at least right now yet richest in wages/facilities; wonder how much of a coincidence - i think they've lost more times at the new lansdowne already than the old one in 30yr :/

Hellooo, i don't really get the big sensation around it myself. I mean I enjoy watching the World Cup when it is on, I admire the skill, level of fitness and appreciate that it is the most popular sport in the world.

HOWEVER, here are my rants about soccer...

I think it is over glamourised, the amount of money that these players get is RIDICULOUS

The big shot players think they are gods because they can kick a football skillfully and people treat them as such , its only a ball of air

Why do irish people support any random English club, all i ever hear is irish people talking about Man U, Liverpool, Norwich, Everton etc...i mean what connection do these irish people have to these English clubs? and they spend money on their jerseys and going to their games and become so passionate about it, i don't get it. I mean these clubs are essentially a business, and players have no loyalty to a club other than how much they get paid.

    Aaaah rant over.

for a non-fan i would imagine its an extremely boring sport to watch, even for us hardened supporters the wc this year was about as exciting as watching paint dry and thats been the case since the one in mexico in 86, compare the wc final, fa cup final or champions league final last year to game 7 of the nba finals in 2010 or the gold medal match between usa and canada (ice hockey) at the winter olympics, i am not an ice hockey fan but that was exciting

    I love footy... it's a beautiful game.

Fell in love with the sport when I was 5 years old, watching Match of the Day & have watched it ever since.. League of Ireland, The Premiership, La Liga, Champions League & international games.

I couldn't give two figs if some don't like it - each to their own, but it baffles me that people get so worked up about those who do.

And the idiots from Ireland who give out about Irish people supporting English clubs actually pisses me off... they should take their stupid sense of patriotism & nationalism and stick it up their retarded arses.

Or just get a life, whichever is the most painful.

i go to support my local team, meet up with mates and there is nothing better than watching a game live in the stands were the players can actually hear you,

i havent a clue how barstoolers do it imaging shouting at someone on a t.v screen or slagging a person from dublin calling them a scouse twat or a manc wanker

Why do irish people support any random English club, all i ever hear is irish people talking about Man U, Liverpool, Norwich, Everton etc...

cities like liverpool and manchester have huge irish populations, many famous irish internationals have played for the likes of liverpool and man utd be it roy keane, paul mcgrath, kevin moran, ronnie whelan, steve heighway, johnny carey, john alridge, ray houghton, also both teams success over the past 50 years has made those two clubs the most identifiable, its not just irish people that go mad for the likes of liverpool and man utd, norway, asia, south africa have massive pockets of supporters of those clubs

Yeah I usually get that kind of aggressive/angry response when I give my opinions on this, seems many disdain an alternate way of looking at things / challenging of opinion

The idea that football is defined by the relative handful of overpaid fat cats in the game is bogus. It is still the world game: one of the most skilful fames there is and a community game that is also the most widely played game at all levels in this country despite the lady-roasting millionaires of the foreign tabloids.

You "challenging" and "alternate ways of looking at things" really don't interest me in the slightest. Especially as they are neither challenging nor alternative.

It's overhyped to the point where it is no longer just sport.

One major thing that gets to me is that Irish broadcasters announce results of Division Three matches in England instead of giving a brief mention to minority sports where Irish people are involved eg. Athletics,Cycling, swimming.
