AFAIK you can under the various derogations for vermin species like Hoodies and Mags which are listed by NPWS a couple of times of year. I'm sure the mods have them stickied somewhere

If causing damage to livestock or crops yes they can be shot with a rifle or shotgun.

    Check it out here.

That is the out of date 2009 version - The 2010 derogation has banned all use of poison baits against birds

Honestly didn't read the whole thing, just wanted to show it for the parts relating to shotgun/rifle shooting. I'm assuming these are still okay.

Must find an updated version for this year (2010/2011).

No probs - here it is : http://www.npws.ie/en/media/NPWS/Publications/Legaldocs/Declaration%20regarding%20Connacht%20September%202010.pdf

PS: There is one posted for every province but they are all the same in this case:)

They are renewed regulary to cover the whole year and are published in the Press as such - the provisons are in any case now National/EU law and are only updated to include/exclude species according to their conservational status:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭everypenny

By my understanding of the act it states that you can only shoot a bird deemed to be destructive to crops etc. on an area of land that it may cause the destruction. But if that bird is considered a danger to public health under the act then it can be shot on any land, with the neccessary permissions of course.
I know you can shoot same with a rifle, but i have heard but never seen written that it is illegal to do so with a moderator. Does anyone have the facts in relation to this or is it just more barrack room lawyering?

i think one of the mods deleted his post and edited mine, just in case it became inflamed.

@ John Galway, just so you know i wasn't trying to antaganize the person who commented on foxboys pic, only trying to debate a point. I believed him to be a shooter as well and not an 'anti'. My apologies if my comment was deemed to have an alterior tone or implication though by either yourself or the other poster, that wasn't my intention.

Seriously M8, you've nothing to worry bout - The following (includes all the derogations) explains everything, at least better then I can, just click on your province:)

Has no bearing on it at all. If you can shoot with a rifle then a moderator (assuming you are licensed for one) is of no consequence.

PS - Foxboy i merged the two threads as they are directly related.

yes. during certain periods of the year, namely september to end december and if they are deemed destructive to crops (so long as it is in the area where crops are being destroyed) or if they are a danger to public health or livestock.

hi lads, i did not say shooting a magpie is wrong, most of my shooting is vermin, all i said is dont advertise our sport with pictures antis would use against us. just to let you know i hunt with hounds, shoot with shotgun, lamp with lurchers and dig with terriers.

    happy huntin:)

In my opinion if we hide the pictures then we are essentially saying to the anti's that we are doing something wrong or we are ashamed of what we do.
Shooting game or vermin can provide bloody pictures this is reality, I dont see why we should hide them, these images would not have provoked aghast feelings a 100 years ago as they were used to it. We have hidden to much in the past 50 years to the detriment of hunting. This is my 2cent, am I wrong? Is the anti movement so great in size that we must hide our sport for fear of it been taken away? I do not know the answer to my last question.

With regard to photographs, I think setting is important. I rarely post a photograph of a fox without my rifle being in the photo to a degree that it can't be removed. Reason I do this is I know of a lad in the UK who headshot a fox, with a .243 I believe. His photo, which contained no rifle, was put up on anti sites with the caption that the fox had been killed with a pick axe or some similar tool.

So if the poster considers how their photo can be twisted, then puts in place measures to deny anti hunting people that path, there can be no harm done IMO. Including the legal method of dispatch makes their job an awful lot tougher.

The anti version of the story ran along the lines "Hunter barbarically murders defenseless fox with pick axe".

The damage from a .243 head shot is catastrophic, literally ploughed a furrow. Having known the same lad for a long time he was gutted his photo was snatched like that.

And was it in a newspaper or on flyers?
If it was in a newspaper then i'd be annoyed by the fact that the would have taken an editorially biased stance on it instead of getting the views from the pro lobby as well.
If it was flyers then there's not much that can be done. Believe it or not i actually got one in my door the other day saying that Cowen was the man to lead us out of the Recession!!!!

It was online on one of their own sites, I'm not sure if it was distributed any other way.

the last deer i posted the pic of was shot with a .243 and it blew up the top of his skull and popped out and eye. looking back at the state of the head it does look like it was attacked with a axe or hammer. we took the pic of "his good side" for the sake of people not vomiting when they saw it. but again the rifle was in the pic to make sure people knows it was done properly with the proper caliber rifle
