Anyone else having problems getting on to moodle. I'm not able to log in full stop and nothing loads up. This seems to happen a bit to the site. Pretty frustrating since I made the effort to drag myself away from loved ones and back to Dublin to start studying for these whore bag exams, and now I cant even get access to my notes.

    This is an absolute disgrace.

OK every site might go down once in a blue moon, but this is the 4th/5th time already this year that it's being down.

Absolute rubbish, the University is letting us down big time.

Add to this, the new electronic system of payment for printing in the Library, which has being a huge failure. Member of staff told me that she say "nothing wrong with the old system" and that the new system has caused "nothing but trouble"

Also, the computers in the Library seem to not let people log in when they feel like it, or take random notions to work in slow motion.

DCU would want to cop themselves on, University of the Year my rear end !

Fully agree, and if this is still down tomorrow I am definitely gonna complain to the college (what ever it will be worth). It's been down all day now and attention should be drawn to the fact that thousands of students will be relying heavily on this site to prepare for exams. It's nothing short of embarrassing for DCU and further proves why the college is not held in the same league as Trinity or UCD imo. This glitchy bull**** is never ending with DCU, can't wait to be rid of the place this year!

It's bad enough trying to sit down to study, then when you finally get settled and discover the site is down, they aren't gonna win fans like that.

And when we all seem to be in the ranting mood....

Why could DCU not hold exams before Christmas like UCD. This rubbish of coming back later and dragging the semester and exams over the Christmas "break" is non sense. Why not get them out of the way and let us all enjoy Christmas properly. Furthermore, don't let anyone tell you it cuts down on rent costs, 99% of rent contracts start the 1st of September anyway.

Add to this, a terrible restaurant with overpriced "food" and i use the word food loosely.
The worst social scene of any University (Aidan Grimshaw and your man with "we no speek americiano" the highlight of entertainment, sums it up really)
The most expensive Gym of any Irish University (most are free)
    Terrible parking facilities.
Horrendous drainage on campus, when it rains Campus often resembles Bangladesh after the Tsunami. Poodles lying everywhere, impossible not to get your feet soaked.
Campus residence LTD who think it's okay to charge students in excess off 125 euro a week for Larkfield standard accomadation.

No wonder the place is a laughing stock !

Post/Pre christmas exams is a personal choice. My undergraduate in UCD we did them pre christmas, I often had assignments due during my exams. On top of that, travelling to blackrock or ballsbridge 2 weeks before christmas is never a pleasant experience.

The restaurant is the same as every university, contrary to what you might believe.

Gyms are not free in most of the colleges, thats just entirely wrong. In fact, the opposite is true.

Of the campuses I've been on, Maynooth, Trinity and UCD are all particualrly bad in the rain too.

It amazes me how much of a grass is always greener on the other side world some people live in.

The true disaster in DCU is the printing system, its embarrassingly bad.

What ever about the over all facilities in DCU, their incompetence on the IT front has lost me almost a full day's study at this point. With the library closed Moodle is absolutely essential for me to do any study for my final year exams as all of my notes are there. And I'm obviously just one of the many students in this position. I don't mean to keep ranting on about this but it is an absolute ****ing joke this stuff happening 15 days from the exams.

Don't apoligise for ranting, rant away! I feel the exact same way as you. It is totally unacceptable for moodle to be down. I need to access journals for an assignment and this facility is also down.

Its hard enough to find motivation to study at this time year, why do DCU have to make it even more difficult for us?

It would help if they could post an eta of when they expect to have it up and running again.

Post/Pre christmas exams is a personal choice.

What do you mean by personal choice? We had absolutely no say in when the exams were scheduled for.

The restaurant is the same as every university, contrary to what you might believe.

Not true... I've eaten on campus in UCC, UL and UCD. They too were a bit pricey, but it was much better food. I think that whoever said "I use the word 'food' loosely" was being a bit harsh, it's not that bad, but at the same time it's not good either.

Gyms are not free in most of the colleges, thats just entirely wrong. In fact, the opposite is true.

DCU is 250. Trinity is free for students. UCD is 170. UCC is free (it's paid for with student registration fee). UL 185. NUIM free.
Why are DCU students being charged the most out of everyone in the country when our gym isn't even all that great?

Of the campuses I've been on, Maynooth, Trinity and UCD are all particualrly bad in the rain too.
Can't really comment on any of those 3.

It amazes me how much of a grass is always greener on the other side world some people live in.
Especially when the grass really is greener.

The true disaster in DCU is the printing system, its embarrassingly bad.

I haven't used it that much, think I've only spent about 3 euro printing stuff so far, but I haven't had any problems so far. What exactly are you having problems with?

Another thing I'd like to comment on is the amount of books in the library. I'm not sure about the majority of people, but a good few that I've talked to have complained about the lack of books for certain fundamental subjects in their course. I have noticed the same for my own course (Law and society) I'm aware it's a fairly new course but there should be enough for at least 1/4 of the class to have access to books. I know we have a small student population but it's a bit ridiculous tbh.

I am final year Law and this is exactly why I need to get on to Moodle so desperately. To be honest I've given up on the hope that I may get hold of any of my Law books even before we went on holidays. The ones I needed had on average 5 copies each in the library i.e, forget about it!

In the event that this site is actually still down tomorrow, where would one actually direct a complaint?? I would much rather it be back up and running and to just get on with study but if I lose another day I'll be looking for some compensation in the marking of exams. I mean if DCU are going to accept personal circumstances as a hindrance on exam performance then the lack of being able to access notes, past papers etc as a result of fault on their end will have to be giving some consideration.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,670 ✭✭✭✭Wolfe Tone

Being a keyboard warrior myself I would be willing to complain too.

Cillian Byrne and/or your faculty SU convenor would be your best bets to make a complaint to. Cillian's the Education and Welfare officer for a reason and he sits on the appeals board as well I believe. He'll happily listen to you and if he gets enough complaints, the DCU Exec would have no choice but listen to what the student body has to say.

The DCUSU Exec are there for a reason. Use them.

Does anyone know if the autoforward would work in cases like this? I think I shall be moving to it. I have not had to use it since the old 20 MB system limitations, but the "Gmail" system is proving poor and has cost me late submissions in the past!!!

PROBLEM 1Post/Pre christmas exams is a personal choice. My undergraduate in UCD we did them pre christmas, I often had assignments due during my exams. On top of that, travelling to blackrock or ballsbridge 2 weeks before christmas is never a pleasant experience.

PROBLEM 2The restaurant is the same as every university, contrary to what you might believe.

PROBLEM 3Gyms are not free in most of the colleges, thats just entirely wrong. In fact, the opposite is true.

PROBLEM 4Of the campuses I've been on, Maynooth, Trinity and UCD are all particualrly bad in the rain too.

It amazes me how much of a grass is always greener on the other side world some people live in.

The true disaster in DCU is the printing system, its embarrassingly bad.

-Problem 1. Solution is that them socially retarded lecturers that give assignments due for week 12, bring forward their deadlines to week 8/9.
DCU isn't in Ballsbridge or whatever kip ya mentioned across the water, (don't intend ever going over to the snobs) DCU is relatively easy to get to.

-Problem 2. The restaurant is a joke. I don't mind paying over the odds for food, if the food is of good quality and decent portion, in DCU it's neither quality or portion.
Alternatively you can pay 4.90 for a chicken fillet roll in spar? Great options there.

-Problem 3. Someone else quoted the prices, need i say more ?

-Problem 4. I don't give a fiddlers fee about Maynooth, Trinity or wherever. DCU drainage is a joke and something should be done.

Who ever mentioned taking this disruption into account for correction of exams has made the best point of us all.
We should get every single DCU student to ...

    (a) Complain to the SU about the problem.
    (b) Complain Directly to DCU about the problem. There's an ISS there, i don't know what they do, but they don't run the websites well anyway.
    (c) Apply to DCU for extra marks as a result of this interference.
    (d) Possible boycut exams !!!
And burn DCU to the ground !! Start at the crappy library and work our way through to the crappy restaurant !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 694 ✭✭✭douglashyde

I imagine this won't be fixed until Tuesday until this problem is fixed.

Not to hijack the subject but on a somewhat related matter, it's absurd that a student library is closed until the 5th right when exams and assignments are due. It's only as a final year student that I appreciate this fact fully.

Shops are open because people want to shop so surely to God a student library should open because students' want to study.

The libraries public sector management seems to have a mindset of its own.

if you all really cared about the material thats on moodle, why didn't u:

a: save them to your own computer, or
b:print them off, either in college (i've never had problems) or at home and bring them to class?

You shouldn't have to do this with moodle. If you were to print everything you would be destroying a small rainforest!

Don't mind him, he's just trolling. I dunno who else to contact, I already emailed the ISS service desk yesterday but yeah I reckon until the library has reopened, this problem will probably remain. I definitely want to complain if it is gone all day today too. If enough people did complain, they would have to take this into consideration when marking imo.

If it's gone all day today they'll have to consider it. I'll be wanting an extension to an assignment I have due in next week too.

What would be the best way in going about a formal complaint? I would think emailing class lists and generating names of students affected would be necessary right? I'm pretty certain the large majority of students do not use boards.ie DCU forum so this is just a tiny sample of how students are being affected.

I'm not! I am relying on it to help me get a 1:1 or 2:1 rather than just a pass. This coupled with access to all of the online Law jornals and databases which can ONLY be accessed through DCU website and can NOT be saved to one's computer. <mod snip - lets not get personal here>

no, i'm just being realistic. i believe students have it much easier than other students did 20 years ago. we also don't live in the past, however - i think the mentality of being so stubborn towards nearly every aspect of college except for maybe the odd piss you take in the jacks amazes me. maybe the flushing in the toilets is a little too slow? did you ever think of criticizing that?

as I said; you had a year, literally, to download all the moodle notes. as for moodle being down, though shit- the brutal honesty is that the IT technician that is responsible for moodle.dcu doesn't give a shit about you. it'll be fixed soon, and this will all be forgotten -

Stop using this thread as an excuse to exercise your "I hate students" bull ****. Start a new thread to rant about how lazy, immature, selfish etc you think students are. I don't give a **** about this, I just care about getting through this final year the best way I can and moodle is ESSENTIAL for this. Why is this so hard for you to accept? Yes, a legitimate complaint for once! Wow, shocking as it must sound to your ignorant ears!
