I got bored looking through threads which fit what I want to say, so I'm gonna post things here from now on. :p

First order of business... we've lost 2 places! And we're set to lose another 2 before we gain another, so time for some ideas.

What do you think we can do to increase awareness?

Bribe people into lowering the cost of electricity? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Essentially paying for everyone else's electricity?

Surely blackmailing or threatening them would be a better idea?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Hold Flaccus and rockal hostage? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

    Or just take their rigs?

If we're gonna go illegal, I figure that's the most efficient way.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

    You're no fun :(:p

    Efficiency > fun.

Also, less jail > lots of jail.

We would need nearly 80 "casual" uniprocessor folders to make up a rockal or Flaccus. Best we try get somebody with a powerful machine on board for 24/7 folding. Perhaps loiter and harass people in B&U or Games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

That's true, but getting a lot of Unicore Folders also gives us flexibility. They're less likely to have a rise in electric fees, and there's also quite a bit of room for improvement; just imagine 80 Unicore Folders all getting a cheap GPU to Fold with.

But I guess I can go and bug people in the Games section... I'll steer clear of Sol's section. For now. :p

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

    Bug away :D:P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Just planning my attack... I tried just going up to people and asking them to Fold before; turned them off instead.

So I'm gonna be sneaky this time. :p

Actually... how about a challenge of sorts? I'm getting ~10k PPD at the moment; why don't we post a challenge to see if anyone can beat that?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

I won't even try - even when the scratchbuild is done I'm still stuck with stock cooling :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

All my stuff's at stock. :p

To be fair, a GTX 470 or better would be enough to beat me... just gotta find someone with one, and give them an incentive...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 hoth17

I'm up for the challenge! :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

You've got your own place to Fold. sozo.gif

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Actually, I was kinda thinking should I post this or not, but sure the worst that can happen is it gets shot down!

What about a Mini-LAN of sorts - I mean most folding rigs are absolute beasts for gaming anyways, why not get together, have a bit of craic, some gaming and incorporate the folding comp as well?

Between all of us there's gotta be enough gear (switches, cables, consoles, etc)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

You mean... spend some time gaming instead of Folding?

well obviously we should have the rest of the farm still folding ;)

Shame I've not played a PC game in almost 8 months then, isn't it? My PS3 fills my gaming needs now. :p

Must be designed to wreck people's PPD :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

I dunno... we've talked with PG about their benchmarking system, and how they decide the bonus factor for each WU, and they've said this is the fairest value for the WU. All we can hope is future WUs will be a bit kinder.

In other news, we had a pretty good day yesterday; just shy of 40k. If we keep this up, and get rockal back soon, we'll start making progress through the ranks, and maybe get rid of some of these threats. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Did we just drop a -bigadv?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

    hoth just out-rocked rockal!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭cian1500ww

    I see we've moved up a spot too :D

    Stuck on a P6701 now :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Back to 300th... now we just gotta stay there. :D

And I know what you mean... P6702. Had to turn it off for a bit yesterday too, so only 2.8k PPD. :(

Yay, we've moved up two spots now!! :D

And I've been given another p6701...

Can't wait until I get upgrading to the new sandybridge chips, seen somewhere that the i7-2600k should do about 50k ppd!! It's confirmed to have a TPF of 2:04 running at 4.9Ghz

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Yay! Scratch-build is still "nearly finished" and shall stay that way for days to come - with an asthma + flu + chest infection triple whammy the GP ordered me not to do... well, anything really :o:o

This is my fault for making New Year's Resolutions. Every time I do, God immediately s***s on me :o:p

Yeah, it's looking pretty good. What prices are we looking at here (everything I've heard of it uses dollars :p)?

Been trying to find that out all day, seen somewhere that said the 2600k will retail around the £250 mark. The CPU price will probably be around the same price as the dollar equivalent, it's the mobo prices that'll be the make or break for me.

Edit: What's this scratch build about Sol?? :D

Argh... I had the bright idea of a slimline watercooled alu mITX scratchbuild. Catch being that I didn't have the money for the WC gear after I bought the components :o So I was going to throw it all into a cheap-n-nasty plywood scratchbuild (costing a whopping €15 :p) and run it on air without mad OCing until the situation improved, because there's no SFF case on the market that can take an mITX mobo, an ATX PSU and a slimline optical drive :o

Since then every disaster imaginable has befallen me and the s***ty plywood box is still not finished, as it needs the filters, power switch, HDD bracket and trim pieces cut and then assembly, last-minute sanding/adjustment and then staining/varnishing :o

Sounds cool, I had a watercooled setup once but a plastic compression fitting broke and leaked a lot of fluid on my gtx260 which amazingly survived. I don't think I'll be putting water anywhere near my rigs for the time being

I've seen some wooden builds before and they take some real skill, post some pics when it's done!!

Oh, this one involves no skill at all! Coincidentally its butt-ugly... :p

Why oh why did I use plywood and not triple-ply or real wood?! banghead.gif
