    Hi all

I have been shooting for the last 13 years with a Silma U&O double trigger non choke shotgun. To be fair i have shot very well with this, however the gun is very light so therefore the recoil is bad. After 100 shots my shoulder is ready to break. I will hang onto my Silma

Can anyone reccommed a shot gun new or a good second hand gun, im not going to spend thousands but i have a budget of €1550 - €2000

Thanks in advance for your help

My personal choice and suggestion would be the beretta 682e Gold Sporting.

They are around the €2850 - €3100 mark NEW depending upon where you buy, but they can be got for €1750- €2000 for a top quality second hand one. Also try look for the adjustable cheek piece version. Mine did not have it, but i did not need it, but it is useful to have and not need rather than need and not have.

    Details here.

    Thanks for the reply

Do you know of any dealer that will allow you to try it out before purchasing

Ive heard it may be an option to purchase in the North, do you know if this is the case? or a waste of time?

I know Lakelands in Mullingar have a great clay pigeon range setup on the property. Also have a great selection of shotguns ranging from €500 - €5,000+. They will be able to give you a demo of any gun you choose.

They are slightly dearer than some dealers, but by no means OTT pricewise. If you go there ask for Neil.

In relation to buying from the North its not only possible, but if you have cash and nothing to trade then possibly a better option. Tannyoky guns in Poyntzpass, Newry have a quality selection of shotguns, and would be at most an hour or so from Dublin via the M1. Cecil or Jim will help you out and he does alot of business with people from the South with him being just over the border so is very familiar with the import process.

You travel North, select the gun you want, get the paperwork with the serial number, make, model, etc. A copy of the dealers license (this will be needed), go onto DOJ website, fill in application for import license, attach all the paperwork from the dealer along with a copy of the front and back of your own license and e-mail it all to the address at the top of the application form. This can all be done online and takes at most 10 working days. Best to submit it on a Thursday/Friday as the forms are checked and processed on a Monday.

    Hi All,
The 682 gold E is an excellent option however there are quite a few very well used ones around. IF You have that sort of money to spend you should buy brand new, there are some excellent options around. There is the 686 beretta or the 525 browning and both class guns. I myself would prefer the browning(Its a little finer around the edges) but thats purely personal opinion. Another option is the Miroku mK 38 (grade 1) teagued sporter/Trap. This gun is is quite simply the best money can buy in that range. look at mike yardley's review on net. This gun is used by several top shots in the uk(carl bloxham for one). No more than 1800 should secure a new one.

    regards

Have one of those also and they are a terrific shotgun. New they run around €2200 - €2400, but second hand about €1450+.

Also a good option. Depending on exact model and with 30" barrels you are looking at €1900 - €2500 new. Same region (pricewise) as the Beretta 686e.

Also a good gun and good value too.

There are many other guns, but i'm not 100% sure on price. Such as Perazzi, Benelli, etc. Some can be gotten for €2,000 or under, but most would be second hand.

The reason i suggested the 682 was not simply because i have one, but because for the extra money they are the better gun. Now i know thats down to personal opinion aswell, but shortly after i got mine, 3 other lads changed to the Beretta 682 within 3 months. All 3 bought second hand.

I suppose its down to the OP's personal choice, and what he likes. One piece of advice stay away from game guns, short barrels and do buy a gun if the fit is not perfect.

Thats a fair point on the 682, this will give me a starting point to work from.
what is your opinion on the recommended length on barrels?

When you first purchased the 682 how did you know it fitted you, did you put it on your shoulder in the show room or did they allow you to fire it at targets?

I'm not saying you should only look at the 682, but for the money they are the superior gun.

    Clays only - 30" or 32". I prefer the 32" myself.

I never fired the gun prior to buying. Very few shops have a range to use it on.

I put the gun to my shoulder time after time and every time it sat perfectly. I was looking down the rib, there was no left or right in my line of view, no subtle adjustments after the gun came up to make it comfortable.

You'll know it when you pick up the right gun for you.

What's a Citori go for these days?

I had a 20ga that broke clay better than 12 - much easier to swing and acquire targets.

Browning Citori is a beautiful bit of kit.

Ez, do you shim your shotties? I never have, but probably should. Have you ever written about shimming in a thread to which you could refer me?

The beads on my shotty are not perfectly level, the rail on the top (metal piece) is viewed as going uphill from the shooters' shouldered view. I guess that means I need a smim that pitches it down towards the ground? A shim that while holding perpendicular would be thin at the bottom and thick at the top.

Just got a new shotgun, haven't fired it. Would like to look into those shims.

Should get a new one for 1550 - 1700. It basically a more basic version of a grade 1 525. They are heavy in the sporter and will take recoil no problem, the barells on them are not back bored so recoil will not be as soft as brownings with the longer chokes. I had one from knew that I sold as I needed cash tbh. They shoot very well and are very well but I would much prefer a beretta for handling although I always shoot better with brownings. You should get a minter citori 2nd hand for 1200 or less. If the price is right then buy one. If you have 2k buy a beretta
