Silent hill 2. Among other parts, one of the worst was passing a mirror and watching a small crack slowly expand to take over the whole room. No game has ever matched the fear of evil silent hill either :)

Computer games arent scary lads. Real games are!...

    Danger Darts.

The concept: Drink about 50 pints. Then commence the game which basically involves taking turns of standing infront of the dart board while compeditors try to hit the dart board around your head. What do you win? Nothing. But what can you lose? EVERYTHING... or well, your eye sight for a start anyway!

System Shock 2 is just full of creepy moments. Like everytime the Many talk to you psychically:

Or the moment when they transport your mind into the body of the many to warn you:

Babies must rest, babies must sleep.

Man, those are some of the creepiest voices i've ever heard. They really got them right throughout the game. Plus, the enemies. And the ghosts. And Xerxes. And Shodan.

It's no wonder that the people in charge of the sound in System Shock 2 and the Thief games knew their stuff so well that they went on to found Harmonix.

Talking of voices, the voice of The Darkness in ...well, The Darkness was cool,Mike Patton sounds like what you'd imagine Satan would lol those WW1 trench levels were kinda creepy too

Thought the Darkness was one of the worst games I ever played. Terrible combat, laughably bad AI and a plot that was just stupid and badly written if well acted.

One game I forgot was Forbidden Siren. That game is terrifying. You have to sightjack enemies. So you go defenseless and can't move and have to tune the analogue stick to see through the eyes of your enemies. Nothing worse than sight jacking an enemy and seeing through his eyes that he is coming right up behind you about to kill you. Some really disturbing cutscenes and story as well.

Scariest games for me were Resident Evil 1, Silent Hill/Silent Hill 2 and more recently Dead Space.

Oh the Darkness was pants, novel idea but poorly done, the darkness itself was a cool concept, and the sidekick minions were funny, but the levels aside from the subway hubs were horribly designed.

I couldnt finish Forbidden Siren, it creeped me out too much

    Another Silent Hill 2 here.

The fact that it took so bloody long for anything to happen was the worst. Best suspense ever in any game I have ever played.

Also the hospital in it. W...T...F...

One thing I didn't like much about Silent Hill 2 was the protagonist (James) was just very stupid in the game. And also the fact it wasn't very hard to kill the monsters. Only a couple of gun shots to take them down or you could just also completely avoid them most of the time. Still a good story though.
Pyramid Head was scary but then he didn't really do much. He moved slowly and you could easily dodge him.

Guess this video sums up Silent Hill 2 quite well:

TBH the only thing I liked about SH2 was the story line and Pyramid Head.

I liked SH3's protagonist more. She was sorta funny while at the same time not stupid like James. Kinda more likable too. Also the other world in SH3 was really creepy. The monster's were freakier as well. I think it was a really good sequel to the first Silent Hill.

SH4 had a really creepy concept of being trapped in the apartment and the only way out was through a creepy hole in the wall that just appears out of nowhere. The hauntings were creepy aswell. So were the dogs and ghosts you couldn't kill.

I think people like SH1 because it was the first original one and everyone always likes the first original game. Had a really brilliant story and almost everything about it was great maybe apart from Harry going on about "Have you seen a little girl?"!!

SH2 was good because the town had a creepier atmosphere and the concept was good. But I felt it was let down by the protagonist being a little stupid and the monsters not really much of a challenge. I somehow didn't find it scary at all...

SH3 was brilliant against. I wasn't too keen about playing as a stupid teenage girl in the beginning but towards the end of the game you really end up liking the protagonist. Much stronger character than James (although James had more emotional problems), Heather was kinda more funny and made the game more enjoyable. The other world was extremely creepy too.

SH4 was probably the creepiest of the lot. Not too fond of the storyline. It was good but not as good as the previous ones though the concept of the game was really creepy and brilliant!

Haven't played the rest of Silent Hill games. Looking forward to the new one though and might play Silent Hill Homecoming sometime... Its one of my favorite game series as the storylines in every game are just so complex and interesting!!

Anyway, I think i've drifted away from the topic of this thread here...

    Forbidden siren?

    9sqwr8.jpg

Man that game was hilarious. so crap i could barely bring myself to play past the first hour or so. The voice acting was cringe inducing. Ruined any element of scariness at all when it sounded like Resi 1 quality voice acting. Same goes for siren: Blood curse. It was ****ing terrible. It looked ugly and played even uglier.

The only game sto genuinely put the ****s up me were Project Zero 1 & 2, and Amnesia: The dark descent.

    Forbidden siren?

Look past the bad voice acting and there's a fantastic horror game there (albeit a horror game it a lot more flaws as well). It takes a while to get into it because of the nonlinear storytelling but when it starts to make sense and get a lot tougher it's damn good. Pity there's some really bad flaws with how the story is unlocked.

FFXIII is the scariest of all!
The fact they thought that THIS is what we wanted from a Final Fantasy game... Get tense just thinking about it.

    Agree with Silent Hill 2.

Another one, although not a Horror per se, is Heavy Rain. There are some scenes in that game that really had me worried. The first scene with Madison in particular was something else!

For me it has to be Thief:Gold on PC (mainly for the underground casino level), System Shock 2 on PC and Alien on C64.

Oh and the multiload for Viz:The Game on C64 was pretty terrifying...

Doom was up there as being scary. The one game that got a physical reaction out of me was Resident Evil 3, not a scary game, but there was one bit where the Nemisis came bursting through a wall and it made me jump in such a way that i threw my controller up into my face and it made my nose bleed.

Project Zero on the Xbox scred me so much I quit playing it, this was a few years ago...

I re-bought it to paly again, because it is a great game, thinking, it can't have been that scary. Then I had a nightmare about it.. before even taking it out of the box.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,026 ✭✭✭docdolittle

I remember I was about 11 or 12 playing Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, scared the shite out of me :o I was home alone in the dark in my brothers room with the 14" monitor and the trusty ps1. I was walking through the safe haven that was the police station when suddenly a big mutant zombie freak burst through the wall scaring the living **** out of me...

That would still be the scariest moment of gaming for me :odam capcom

I've yet to see a game lately that would scare me though... A few jumps at certain parts of games like dead space, but other than that, no survival horror has really lived up to its genre for me on any platform for being 'scary' :(
