I'm pretty sure it's only a three month warranty.

the guy said to me 3 year .

A three year warranty with a YLOD repair? Sorry but either he's spoofing/dodgey or you took him up wrong.

Sony offer a 3 month warranty on their refurbs, and most repair companies seem to offer the same. A three year warranty on a fix which is known to only be a short-term remedy is too good to be true.

well go ring them up then .or when i leave my ps3 with them ill report back

Ring who up? I don't see any details.

Like you don't get a three year warranty with a brand new PS3, so why on earth would an old repaired one get such a long term? There's obviously been a miscommunication somewhere along the line. As above, it's likely three months.

I got my phat fixed by the crowd in Tallaght for €80 and was given a 3 month warranty(didn't last that long, but I got my stuff transfered to my slim). :D
Like EnterNow said, you don't even get three years for a new one.

Any so called reflow repair backed by a 3 month warranty is not a reflow. A reflow done with on a good work station should give you at least a year.

Must repair shops don't even use flux lol  Its just about the fast buck!

Another casualty here,60Gig Fat first launch died last night, got it as a bonus in Oz when we picked up the Bravia so i will be getting on to them there and will be eager to see what they have to say.
I would love to have a go at the repair myself but think i will be better off on a return basis if it is not touched.
It had tons of use in it's years mostly through video usb playing/streaming and it is sorely missed .
Got some photos too that i would like to get off the harddrive but that surely can't be done without opening the console?

Thanks for that,i tried the hairdryer method and i got it back again.

I know it's a quick fix but i got all the backup done and was playing games and watching films for @ 5 hours on it last night.

In the process of doing the hair dryer repair on my 60GB launch PS3 now. Letting it cool down at the moment, will try to boot it up at around 9 I think, I will initially try without the hard drive, and take it from there depending on the results. Fingers crossed...

Go for it,i didn't over do the heating process by any means and was keeping it at a good distance from the box and console end,i was interrupted twice during the heating and gave no more than 15 mins with brief pauses and i had no electric fan or the likes for the cooling just a childs Chinese plastic fan and one big sore arm but a big grin was had at the end of it all .

Having just observed the PS3 outer shell after finishing the heating part I noticed it has slightly drooped in the time I've been doing it, so maybe it was a bit too hot! :o Hopefully the same didn't happen to the interior, warranties out, so I'll have a look inside tomorrow and see if all the other hardware components are in good shape in order to flog it, it'll be a bit snide to ship it when none of the hardware words.

Will give it a go soon, wish me luck.

I can't believe it, it actually worked - I would never have thought it, my efforts were more out of hope than expectation, Dad wasn't in least bit optimistic about it and questioned the entire operations method - in which was quite understandable seeing as it involves a fucking hair dryer and sweaters/towels/cardboard boxes.

Delighted with it, as soon as it was fired up I proceeded to eject Read Dead Redemption, which is all important it must must be said. Then I got rid of all the unnecessary crap as soon as possible like non-valuable pictures, videos and music, synced the trophies with the server and connected up my 1T Western Digital external HDD which is FAT32 formatted and started backing up the storage utility. Started off with "Remaining Time: Approximately 5 Hours and 58 Minutes" for the back up, but after a minute or so it jumped down to 5hrs 18mins, twenty-five minutes in and I'm at 6% so it looks like an all-nighter for the wonky PS3 tonight, but as long as I can get this done I can breath easy. Having said all that, the fan was louder than I have ever heard it for the first ten or fifteen minutes since booting it up again, after that it got a bit more quiet but it is still a very noticeable and consistent fan noise, unusual for a PS3.

Took mine out of the bottom of the glass stand and it now sits on it's own in the vertical position,no real reason just encouraging it along ;).

The back up stopped last night at some point. Suppose I'll have to be persistent with it, so it started again at about 8, so it should be finished by the time I get hone on lunch break from work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

You're lucky, Nailz. The hairdryer treatment got me maybe 15 seconds of life out of my machine, although that was all that I needed to retrieve mty FIFA disc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

Well at least you got what you wanted from it, my primary intention was to get Red Dead out, syncing the trophies and backing it up was a non issue really as I had already done it the Sunday before last. Plus I didn't get playing it much between the backup and the YLOD for the week that was in it so backing it up now is going to gather up only the little bit that I done over it.

My second attempt at backing up also failed at some point in between starting it in the morning before work and coming home for lunch at 2. So I tried it again before I went back to work at 3 and now I'm back and it's on the home stretch, thankfully. 7% left to download with remaining time at 20 minutes, it appears to be third time lucky — although having said that if it bricks the back up now I'll fucking chuck the PS3 through the window!

Sorry for the double post, but what I didn't want to happen happened last night and the back up stopped at 98% after 5-and-a-bit hours of the backup process and came up with an error message saying the backup could not be completed at this time, or whatever, and had an error code of which I cannot remember. I had an inkling that all the other backup's stopped at the same point, so to test this suspicion I let it back up over night, again, and I had a look into the background of the screen as the error message dimmed the backup bar, and low and behold it stopped at 98%.

    Well that's grand, because I'm progressing in the direction of finding out what the particular problem is, the annoying part of that is that it's tricky to figure out! But I think I got a good logical brain on me, so I might be able to pluck all the information I can gather and see what solution I find most plausible. This is what I'm thinking;

The backup finishes with 2% left to go, which is 1/50 of the over all backup left. There is a roughly 54GB that could be backed up. So obviously if you do the maths of it, the backup is stopping before at least 1080MB from the HDD is backed up (54,000MB/50).
Now, take into regard the backup ran nice and smoothly through just a week before hand, and as already stated I didn't do much as regards the PlayStation over that busy week between that backup and the YLOD, so it is easy to trace my footsteps.

All I done over the week was play a bit of FIFA, Red Dead Redemption, and I also downloaded Dead Nation, although I'm not sure which side of the back I did Dead Nation, but I'm sure it was after the initial successful back up. So bar a few not-so-unusual game saves in FIFA and Red Dead, the Dead Nation download is the only big thing I done in that time. The size is roughly 1,400MB too, which is close enough to the remaining fraction of space left in the back up.

So what's everyone's opinions? I think if backup was processing the HDD's data chronologically, considering the amount of space that Dead Nation uses up the backup progress bar would stop in and around 97/98%, BOOM! :) It makes sense as it mentions before the backup that certain content marked as copyrighted may not be backed up, so Dead Nation is probably under copyright! So when I get back for lunch I'll just delete it and start the backup again - it can be downloaded again without much trouble anyway.

Brilliant. Having said all that, if it doesn't work I'll just have to forget about it and assure that 1-and-a-bit GB somewhere in the HDD is corrupted and chance playing on with the PS3 until it bricks itself again in a weeks time. :pac:

Been a while since I last did a back up, but is it possible to only back up game saves and tell system to ignore your dlc(Dead Nation et al) and see how that goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

I never seen an option to ignore DLC, do you know what section I could enable that in?

I can't recall and I'm not at home to have a look.

But when I did a back up, I don't recollect backing up any dlc/games as they are married to the account and in my downloads list - therefore no point in backing them up.

Open to correction though, I just don't remember.

Mine packed in again last night whilst watching media, funny then this morning i switched it on on the back whilst pressing eject to get a game out and it came on with no problem.
Was on for around an hour, did a system update i had been avoiding, restarted after that then blinked off.
Nialz do you operate it on a damp cloth as the Youtube vid instructed?
    I haven't.
Just completed the hairdryer job again, will see how it fairs later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

Nah, I just slipped it into my Bill Hicks hoody, as the material on it is good quality and nicely shut in, doesn't matter as long as you don't let the heat escape. It done the job for me so I've no complaints (apart from the shell slightly melting :pac:). Best of luck with it anyway, hope it works out.

So she passed away last night.

It was a 60GB launch model so having it nearly 4yrs I doubt I'd have any success in a small claims court as previously mentioned.

Anyone know if a bricked one is worth anything at all?... I'm not getting it repaired think I'll just get a new one.

You would indeed have success in the small claims court. Mine packed in last week after 3.5 years - i sent the retailer HQ a letter by registered post quoting my statutory rights, and then got a phonecall the next day saying id get a free refurbished model.

    Know yo rights.

You could get something in the mid-double figures for it, the Blu-Ray drive is seen as quite a valuable article so people are keen on buying dead PS3's if the drive is still intact, as well as some other parts.

Will probably advertise my dead one up on Adverts.ie, just got my new PS3 Slim there an hour ago. 160GB, except I'll be taking out the harddrive, selling it, and putting in a new 640GB Samsung Spinpoint 2.5" SATA HDD.
