Was thinking of joining the new Ben Dunne gym on Jervis St. there, just wondering if anyone had any experiences of it? It's a good price but is there an disadvantages of the place? What are facilities like eg. free weights, do they have a squat rack? Thanks for any replies

Pretty sure they don't have a squat rack, just a smith machine.

I'm in BD Lucan at the mo and I have to say it's a great gym - has loads of equipment. My only gripe with it would be that the dumb bells only go up to 30kg and the biggest plates are 20kg, no 25kg plates. Neither issues are a big deal but just wondering if anyone who has been in the Jervis St gym can tell me if they have heavier DBs and plates by any chance?

There's a pic in the link above that shows what looks like heavier plates of 25kg...

not sure wat the dumbbells went up too sorry, i dont see the problem wit the 25kg plates?? why would you need 25's as oppose to 20's plus a set of 5's?

I wouldn't, like I said, not a major issue. Just prefer the 25s when deadlifting in particular because they raise the bar up ever so slightly and because I prefer to use less plates when possible for any barbell work. No big deal, just wondering.

So the dumbbells only go up to 30kg and you probably won't be doing a lot of Olympic lifting there, but with benches squat racks plenty of cardio machines seems like a good deal for the price. With the offer they have of buying a voucher worth €125 for 100 quid the membership is basically €170.

Does anyone know if they have tv sets to watch while using any of the cardio equipment? Hard to tell from the pictures on their website.

    Thanks

I was in the Lucan branch today and I noticed a lot of equipment seems to be missing and they've now put TV's up? Does anyone know what they are doing and will the equipment be returning?

I'm not sure if equipment has been removed or just moved about? There's actually more equipment in the free weights section now - they've added two decline bench presses. I assume the space they made nearer the front might be for classes or something?

Yes they literally only put them in last week. You can't see any from the weights area but you can see them clearly from the treadmills, bikes etc. I noticed they were all tuned to RTE or TV3 however so if you're planning on having a run while watching the Premier League you might be disappointed. That's not to say they aren't planning on getting a better TV package however, I've no idea.

I couldn't see the machines that used to be over by the window, the leg presses, leg extensions and leg curls? Then again I didn't really look around for them. Yeah there did look like more stuff in the free weights section. They have freed up a lot of room up at the front so it must be for classes. I'll have a better look around next time, I was a bit rushed today!

This might sound like a strange question but does the Jervis Street Gym have yoga mats for doing stretching exercises and do they have ab crunchers. Some gyms neglect to have this basic equipment and i use the yoga mats for pressups, stretches and warm-up exercises etc. Thanks.

Think I you can see a few in the pictures on their website although I haven't been there myself. They have exercise balls so I'm guessing they'd have mats as well.

Yep, they have mats and a stretching/abdominal area... I'm nails though, so I just do me stretching on the floor...

Oh wait, I've just answered that with BD Lucan in mind but I think the question was about Jervis St?? Nevermind, they all seem to be laid out in a very similiar manner.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 249 ✭✭Stu

Ah, i'm nails myself but i wouldn't want to be showing off by using the floor so i just prefer to use a yoga mat, preferably with a few pillows thrown in and a fan blowing warm air onto me as i do my stretches :D.

Thanks, for the replies folks. Just wondering how busy does it tend to be in there at peak hours? The price and location are great, so it must be attractive to a lot of people. I am currently a member of Energie (the old Jackie Skelly's) and I really hate waiting for equipment! I like to get in, do my thing and leave :-)

They've got more new stuff in now, there's a new leg press machine next to the free weights section and another one up the top next to the entrance. The leg curls and leg extensions are also back. :)

Agreed it's a good gym and not just because of the price: nice layout, very bright with big windows, nice changing rooms, friendly staff, no fashion victim members and most users are considerate and tidy up after themselves so there is never any mess on the gym floor. Over the past few weeks it's become a lot busier though with lots of people migrating there from Crunch and other city center gyms, but if you don't go during rush hour it's still manageable.

I know, jesus there's enough stuff in there for three gyms - all terribly confusing for a simpleton like me so I just stick to the BP station and squat rack! :)

I don't think they do but it really is something they should consider. For example, I live near the Lucan branch & work near the Jervis so would like to join both. Maybe if they could do you a deal where you paid 50% of the fee for the 'second' gym & had a restricted membership, ie: off-peak only or something??

Scouting around for a new gym and have been looking at here, noticed they're doing some pretty good offers for yearly membership.

    €300 for 2 memberships

    €395 for 3

    €500 for 4

any interest on here in going in together for cheap membership, eh?
