NUI Maynooth closed until Monday, Dec 6th

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, and in the interests of health and safety of students and staff, the University will close at 1pm today, Thursday Dec 2nd and will remain closed until Monday 6th December.

The University apologises for any inconvenience caused by this decision.

Please continue to check this website for further updates.

    Updated: Dec 2nd 11.00am

    Old Release:
Classes cancelled on Thursday Dec 2nd

Although conditions in Maynooth and on the University Campus have not worsened over the course of the day, deteriorating conditions in the Dublin area has affected evening bus transport to and from the campus.

With more snow forecast overnight, particularly in Dublin and East Leinster, the risk for tomorrow, Dec 2nd, is that public transport will continue to be disrupted. The University has decided that classes, tutorials and practicals, scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 2nd December, will not take place.

The University and Library will be open tomorrow, Dec 2nd, unless local conditions deteriorate, and staff who can reasonably attend for work should do so.

The University will review the situation tomorrow and make a further announcement about Friday classes, which will be updated on the University's website and communicated by e-mail.

I know it was buried in the Snow thread, but really needs it's own thread :)

Miss out on four teaching hours tomorrow now that I won't get paid for :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Yeah, some other offices are also closing and workers paid by the day won't get pay either. I'm on salary so I'll get paid, but I can also work from home so even if I can't make it into work tomorrow with the weather I'll have to put the hours. Not great :P

Ohhhh to be a student again though, great for them!

Same, except mine would have been on Saturday. Saturdays constitute about half of my weekly wage, which sucks.

Would dearly love to be on a salary, rather than a wage...

The ice acts as an insulator and because of this the temperature doesn't drop as quickly and the water shouldn't freeze. The fish are smart enough to know that when it does freeze over they move to the bottom of the pond, granted it's deep enough, and they stay there where the temperature is supposed to be around 4 degrees Celsius.

You would probably need to break a hole in the ice to let some fresh air into the pond so they aren't gassed out.

I can confirm that the Arts Block is indeed open, seeing as I'm currently sitting in the reading room. And the Nescafé machine is out of service! No extra creamy hot chocolates for me :(

Well, the Arts PACR didn't have access last Monday, if that's an help. No idea about the recreational ones in the circle, though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

PACR definitely has it blocked. Not sure about the ones in the middle of the hall, but I'll run down and check for you now ^_^

None of the computers would let me log on  I could put in my student number/password but no further than that. Sorry!

Also the PACRs are the Public Access Computer Rooms - there's ones in the Arts Block, beside Rye Hall, and then a few on South Campus too.

    Brilliant news altogether.

Wasted a euro on the hot chocolate machine the other day for a cup of brown hot water basically. Wasn't the nicest of drinks

Nuh-uh, they are the nicest drinks EVAR :D You must just have got a dud.

I've found if you drink them straight away (as well as getting a burned gob) they taste foul. Give them two or three minutes to cool down and they're lovely. Not as nice as Bewley's but worth €1

If it's any consolation, my fish survived three weeks in the icebound garden pond a couple of years ago, as Jimmy said, break a hole in the ice for air for them..

    No changes since Thursday.
I'd say that Monday will go ahead.
The Campus isn't great, but the roads to Maynooth have improved a little bit.
Public Transport is still an unknown at the moment, but I'd say that this evening they will have a better idea of what the state of play is.

Is there anywhere selling ice skates in Maynooth??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,416 ✭✭✭Jimmy Iovine

Ah here come on it wasn't that bad last week. Unless you had no sense of balance or were running along like a goon then there's no real need to be complaining. The only place to be avoided in the whole of Maynooth is along by the leaking drain pipes beside The Orient, AIB and O'Neills.

Ireland in general really needs to man up and stop complaining about this snow. It's only a couple of inches not a few feet

Scratch that. The Magic JCB is out, plowing the snow out of the way. Big improvement. Hope it stays that way.... ;)

They weren't for a day or two (more because of the explosion on O' Connell than anything), and I'm lazy ^^', I begged my bf's dad to give me a lift, and he kindly obliged, so I'm here now :P

Except in typical Maynooth fashion, when they went over the roads, they didn't really consider the car parks, despite that being where most of the road users would eventually end up! Had to help a woman who got her car stuck this morning get out, which wasn't helped by the fact that she didn't really get how to drive in slippery conditions.

It's still better than nothing though! I was in a car accident last Fri (wasn't driving :p), so any sort of stability is fine by me!

Roads on this side of campus are neither gritted nor cleared.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 119 ✭✭maroon

Absolutely outraged this morning for the state of the car parks, only front one beside the bridge being some how usable. Felt pretty stupid getting stuck in ice and snow being fairly inexperienced with snowy weather, but reopening of the college despite parking covered in thick ice and snow is not the smartest move either.what if someone broke a leg or worse?

P.S. And I would like to express my gratuity to two patient students for helping me to get out of this mess. If it wasn't for them, i'd still be there, so thank you. :)

    Dear Students,

Because of weather conditions affecting Maynooth and the prospects of further snow tomorrow, the University will close from this
afternoon, December 21st and will remain closed until Tuesday 4th January 2011.

We have taken this decision in the interests of the safety of students and staff, and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this decision.

With best wishes for the Christmas season.

    Yours sincerely,

    Professor Tom Collins

    President

Rather than posting a new thread, just resurrecting this for anyone that it may affect (less than normal, I know, given that there are no lectures, etc.)
