Cold weather tips? How do you cope?

Went out last night to see the latest Potter film (it was pretty average to be honest) and it was that cold and icy on the paths/roads in my area, I had to wear two pairs of socks, heavy Timberland boots and wrapped up to the eyeballs.

When the weather takes a turn for the worse, how do others stay warm?
Any good tips - for indoors and for outside?

(Yes, the other half keeps me warm in the sack too, before ye mention it!) :D

    Burn stuff.

    Wood, briquettes, Dail Eireann.

Whatever you have no longer have any use for.

Thick hoodie + Gloves + Beanie Hat

I don't mind the cold anyways, as long as my hands are covered I can take it.

As for me house, it's like an icebox. I could probably leave the frozen food out on the floor. I've been relegated to my room since that's lovely and toasty from being so well insulated

I gots one of them there wimmen too to keep me warm during the nights, fairly handy to have................especially if you can turn the "horny" switch on. :pac:

As long as the feet, head and hands are toasty the rest can take it.
    Boot/socks/big gloves/warm hat.

For the body - layers is the trick. T-shirt, sweatshirt, woolly shirt and jacket. Longjohns.

Speaking to a taxi driver last night, he told me that wearing two pairs of socks was a waste of time.
Don't know where he got that idea from but just wondering if there was something in what he was saying that might have been true!
    Anyone know?

Two pairs of socks? It's hardly the Siberian gulags there in fairness.

It was very cold in my area - and I have to keep my feet warm as much as possible due to medical reasons alone (short version: an ankle that had part of it removed).

I don't get what the fuss is about, i came to work every day this week wearing a t shirt, i walk maybe 30m from my door to my car and then maybe another 30 from my car to my job, if i have to leave the building i put on a jacket, simple as that, it's Ireland not the north pole! A coping strategy is hardly neccesary, if you're cold turn up the heating or put something on untill you're warm, problem solved!

    Star Belgrade's tips for staying warm this winter;

    1. Store up plenty of fuel to heat the house.
    2. Use it liberally.
    3. Stay indoors.
    4. If you have to go outdoors, don't walk - use the car.

That should keep you toasty over the cold spell.

This list can also be well used in event of a Zombie Apocalypse.

I've heard that 2 pairs of socks can be worse than one as they can hinder the circiulation mon.

I throw a big fleece on before coat and stuff hands in pockets and it's fine.

Battle of Hastings, more like :P

Essential in icy weather is a balaclava. Seriously. Put one of these bonnets on and your skull, lugs, jaw and neck are toasty.
Also I'm miserable if my knees, elbows and shoulders are not well insulated so layers is the way to go.

Snowed last night here in Germany.

Poor zombies. Any time 5 or 6 of them head out anywhere together it's always 'invasion' this and 'apocalypse' that.

My fab boyfriend surprised me with an electric blanket last week and IT IS AMAZING :D It's fleece so it's uber soft and uber warm. I'm much more succeptable to cold than he is, so this way I can have the blanket on the couch, turn it on for half hour and I'm toasty for the rest of the night. It makes much more sense than heating the whole house.

So he's turned you into a giant hot water bottle so he doesn't freeze to death in bed? The big softy.

It would be a cold day in hell then...? :P

...But seriously, I asked the original question because due to the carbon tax alone doubling and as such, bills like as ESB/Gas/etc showing no signs of coming down but getting worse - some folk out there would appreciate further tips on how to keep warm this winter, outdoors and inside.

I'll be quite fine but I'm sure there are some helpful tips out there that some might like to share.

Block drafts, shrink plastic over windows(seriously works), and wool clothing is your friend when venturing outside.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24,878 ✭✭✭✭arybvtcw0eolkf

My winter survival - drive EVERYWHERE!.

Heater on full blast, beanie, scarf, hoodie, gloves - the works.

I dread winter, my moods are sh*t, I get muscle cramps everywhere. Impossible to keep my feet warm.. Even beer doesn't taste the same.

Probably good to get a bit of exercise and get the blood flowing, otherwise you might be all wrapped up but you've no heat to keep insulated in in the first place.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 544 ✭✭✭Pookah

I don't know what they're called, but you can get these reflective things which fit behind a radiator, which retain a lot of heat, esp in poorly insulated houses.

    Tin foil.

I hear Jim Corr has his house wallpapered in the stuff.

Blocks all the little microdrafts around the edges of the windows, very common hereabouts in Buffalo. We are the poster children of wind-chill factor.

A good old fashioned Ushanka. Clothing from the neck down optional.

A hat and thick socks are what'll keep you warmest when you're out.

Inside-seal up any drafts(obviously don't seal everything or you might poison yourself!)
Make sure your rads are giving out as much heat as they can-bleed them if they need it.
A hot water bottle is a cheap way of staying cosy.
Get a Frost Watch for the attic to ensure your pipes don't freeze.
If you've a really cold room or just want extra heat, get an oil filled rad.

I generally manage to be a bit warmer than everyone else somehow, so I don't really have any "tips". I have started wearing gloves and a scarf though, but I still think 2 layers for outside is grand.
We have the central heating on a timer for a couple hours in the evening so we are grand then.

Scarf,a fleece and a rain jacket is what I wear. Somethmes a hat but I dont like hat hair.

I wear 2 pairs of socks and normal foot wear and gloves also.

A hot whisky is always good to cope!

That one is a misconception - for the elderly especially, a very dangerous one.

The intake of alcohol actually lowers a persons body temperature. As such they start to feel the cold less in that their body notices less the differentiation between their own heat and the outside heat.

The onset then of cold related illnesses becomes harder to detect. Pneumonia, etc get a greater chance to gain a hold in the elderly especially.
They think their body is getting warm when in fact their temperature is actually lowering to that of their surroundings.

Layers - a few t-shirts and 2 jumpers usually does the trick. I also wear a pair of leggings or tights under my trousers (I'm a lady-person so this is allowed) and 2 pairs of socks.

Hat + scarf + gloves are essential. Except perhaps the hat.
