MW2 Vs. Black Ops

So after us all having a good run at this now I think we all have an idea what Black ops is all about and like for the most part.

That being said.... which do you prefer?

    MW2 or Black Ops?

*Note this is taking SP and MP into account seeing as they are sold in one pack and both integral parts of the experience.

    Personally I prefer MW2.
Gameplay may be flawed in parts of MP but it does the majorty right and what it does right far outweighs what black ops gets right. The single player in black ops was more enjoyable but not nearly enough to redeem the product on a whole imo.
Sound in black ops is a meer shadow of MW2s, that game was the first I recall that actually used my sense of sound and felt so immersive for it.
Graphics, again MW2 trumps here, from small touches like peripheral vision blured when aiming down sights to larger things like lighting effects MW2 just cleans house in regards to black ops.
Customisation, well black ops has to get credit here, the level of personalisation you can achieve is excellent and hats off to Treyarch for this.

    Your vote / opinions please?!

    Black Ops
I think MW2 is the better game, that said they are DIFFERENT games,if they were the same it would be a waste of money !Black ops is still a good game i'm suprised at the amount of moaning going on,just enjoy it for what it is !It'll get better with patches aswell

I dunno tbh, in speaking with a lot of mates they are very torn between the two.
Sure they are very different but at the end of the day they are based on the same series and relativly same structure so it'll be intresting to see?

Also intresting to see who stays playing black ops if they vote they dont like it as much as mw2? I can say after getting to grips with black ops I wont be playing this much at all and definitly less than mw2 seeing as I simply think its better. How many will stay playing black ops if they dont like it simply cause its the latest COD?

    Good poll.

Unfortunately can't vote yet 'cos I haven't got BOps but tbh I think I'm going to be sticking with MW2. It's been great this week now all ye good players are gone to the new game :)

Ehh, I'll give Blops another while yet before voting, its funny how everyone who complained about MW2 is now hailing it as superior, even though Blops has fixed so many of the problems MW2 had to begin with, no more quickscoping, commando, OMA, tubing is almost non existent, people dont camp as much and no more bull**** killstreak chains, yet because the sounds are tinny and the graphics arent as good MW2 is still better? hindsight is a wonderful thing. If Blops was running on the exact same graphics and sound as MW2 itd be the best COD game by far.

At the mo I'd actually say Blops is the better game, its more fun, you're not constantly being showered with grenades from across the map or people running around knifing constantly, people are using sniper rifles the way they're meant to be used not diving off roofs and 360 noscoping people for the ski1llzz, and you're not doomed to be spawntrapped as soon as someone takes 2 flags and calls in a harrier. Its got faults no doubt, theres stuff that definitely needs to be patched, but I havent wanted to punch a kitten in the forehead as much as MW2 made me want to sometimes.

MW2 was definitly flawed in parts but the parts it got right though were sooooooo good! I think that made the maggot acting like M/L/C more irritating tbh because you knew how good it would be without the ejits.

Played a game of MW2 last night and not a single case of fool acting to be found! , no commando, no scavenger / noob tubes and only a slight bit of camping from one player but that was it! It was such a different game tbh, went 35 -7 on terminal mtdm and enjoyed every second of it.

From a pc stand point i'd go with Black ops even though it's pretty unplayable for me but can see it has potential when it's sorted, mw2 just doesn't work well on a pc at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,732 ✭✭✭Magill

maybe you should wait a few weeks before doing it ? MW2 had a whole year to improve bugs sort out the lag issues at the start. Pointless poll atm.

    Black Ops for me.

I prefer the MW2 graphics, but I enjoy the MP of Black Ops much more than MW2. The maps are better, snipers can't look across vast amounts of the maps now and easily pick people off. They've removed quickscoping, oma, etc. No more nukes. No vehicles (well, none in MW2 either, but vehicles make the game unbalanced imo). A lot more customisation (even the reticle), very detailed stats, bit of strategy with how you spend your xp. The guns feel more balanced too. The killstreaks are counted correctly. Overall, I love the MP and I can see myself putting in my much more time than MW2.

I prefer the campaign Black Ops campaign also (so far at least), the last one I enjoyed this much was MW1. Honestly, I was lost along the way in the MW2 story.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Lab_Mouse

Not gonna play it for a month.

    1:spawning is sh1te
2:stuttering/lag on a kick ass PC is just lazy coding(well if it works on the consoles it will work on PC's...not),thats even with tweaking the config file
    3:maps are a bit meh
4:emptying a mag into someone and they kill you with 2 shots when there is no lag/stuttering does not make a good mp experience

    on the plus side
    1)fuk all snipers..yah!!!
As Magill said it might be a bit early for the poll to be taken seriously but I still voted for MW2

  • Site Banned Posts: 26,456 ✭✭✭✭Nuri Sahin

Magill has said what was needed to be said IMO.

But I'll just skim the surface here a little and say many of those complaining about the spawn system in BO clearly wish it was like that of previous COD games where they could play Sabotage, Demolition and namely Domination.. then proceed to spawn trap the other team. Rinse and repeat over and over and over again with your precious killstreaks.

I want a game that will challenge me a bit more, push me that bit harder to improve myself. I really think playing MW2 has affected my game style overall and mostly for the negative. So Black Ops is a fresh air and reminds me of better days/FPS games where gun skill was a factor and it wasn't about spawn tapping or K/D ratios.

As for sound, it doesn't bother me too much unlike other people. I kinda wished that enemy footsteps was a touch louder when in say within 5/10 yards of you but not to the point of the ridiculousness that was MW2 where you can sound whore from 20-40 yards away! Like the spawn traps, I think those who really sound whored are the ones overly complaining about this.
Oh and I actually wished Ninja/Dead Silence was gone too and I say that as someone who has Ninja on I reckon 3/4's of my classes throughout the last 3-4 years. I think the skill or tactic of getting around an area while crouched served a better purpose to a fairer game.

Personally, I preferred the maps in the main in MW2. I'll admit that. I love my urban, street style maps and they were a plenty in the last two modern warfare games. Only Cracked and Havana really hit the mark with this. That's not say I hate the BO maps, but they rest are very hit n miss in regards to my taste. Plus I think some of the maps could do with a sprucing up with regards to lighting most importantly. I know they were wanted this particular grubby look that they have but I just find too dull and dreary but I think that's what they wanted it to be like. That last point is really nitpicking.

    To conclude this..

So far I'm absolutely loving BO except for the fact snipers are obsolete(wished anything above torso was a one shot kill is all). This time last year I despised MW2 and I stopped playing around this point for a month or two.

If pushed to give a final opinion now? I believe BO is well in the lead and looks like it will need a monumental **** up to change that.

edit - skimming the surface :D

    Black Ops
Have Black Opps since Wednesday and am surprised at the differences between MW2 and this game.

Like everyone else whats really annoying me is the lagging while playing, every match I get the ''Connection Interruption'' coming up and after a while it gets frustrating

Modern Warfare was so much more user friendly (btw I wasnt one who moaned and bitched about it when it came out last year) and not as confusing too, with black opps I think that they added in too much to the online menu and also make it harder to navigate around.

Another thing Ive noticed happening to me is that my attachments keep dissapearing, like its being a few times now that Ive had to go back and buy the iron sights for my pistol, Why ? I'd love to know!

All in all I can see myself playing more of the story mode in BlOpps and sticking to MW2 online.

And on that note of the story mode I really did enjoy it and its the only thing that is stopping me from trading in the game soon.

But lets hope for the best that they fix all these issues and the game can be more enjoyable :)

The SP in Black Ops is epic. I've heard a few people here on boards say it was poor or a shadow of Modern Warfares, but seriously, it's just so much better it's not even funny and I fail to see any merit in those statements - it truly is an amazingly crafted game, right up there now in my mind alongside Bioshock for storyline driven FPS games. Fantastic stuff, in my opinion, I'm happy to pay that much for a game that gives me so much enjoyment before I even touch the MP.

Playing in on speaker/amp combo, and I haven't actually noticed any shortcomings in the sound department, maybe that's just me, but sound quality never even entered my mind in relation to MW2.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,421 ✭✭✭major bill

got the game tonight and finished it:cool: have to say black ops was very enjoyable and imo a much better game than mw2 although ive yet to play it online. The story mode is very good and quite clever the levels were much more enjoyable than mw2. graphic wise and sound i didnt think it was any differant than mw2 if anything i thought black ops was top notch in this department. also good to see former characters from cod 4 world at war introduced into this game.

overall cracking game and the bit at the end-
mason in the picture of jfk walking through the crowd on the day of his assassination
was quite clever and possibly leaves it open for another game

    Black Ops
I voted for MW but will probably change my mind in a month once I get into black ops.
MW was the first call of duty game I played so thats probably why I like it so much. The same as when people were saying last year CoD4 was better than MW2.

    mw >= black ops > mw2 > waw

    In my opinion.

never played cod 1,2,3 as gave up playing video games for a good few years and only really started to enjoy them again when i got a broadband connection

danger close / oma / commando sort of ruined mw2 for me. brillant game when playing with friends, but all to often you end up in games with the other team using these perks. i play alot of demolition so it made this almost unplayable, and like someone else posted, made me want to punch a kitten in the face

    Black Ops
I think MW2 is a fair superior game then BO from what I've seen so far. The graphics and sound in BO are not upto scratch compared the the two MW games IMO plus the lag and spawning in multilayer is really annoying and is ruing the experience for me.

In a nutshell and on the evidence so far I think that Infinity Ward have raised the bar too high for Treyarch to compete with and the sooner that Activision realise this the better for the series.

People are also unfairly judging this game solely on MP, when in reality, there are plenty of people out there who are primarily interested in the single player campaign. I'm not too pushed on the MP at all (haven't played yet apart from launch night, and gave up MW2 some time ago, more of a Halo fan), but was still there at midnight solely having huge expectations for the SP portion of the game. Realistically, the FPS market is fairly crowded, and it's fairly open for a decent, storyline driven cinematic, which aren't in huge supply.

And Treyarch have raised the bar in that regard, MW3 would have to be something very special to better what Treyarch has accomplished in my opinion with Black Ops single player - easily better than Modern Warfare 2.

Also, nothing wrong with Treyarch and the COD franchise as far as Activision are concerned, World at War sold 12 million copies, and Black Ops Preorders and initital sales are actually stronger than Modern Warfare 2 (which itself is the biggest selling game ever)....so I don't think Treyarch are going anywhere anytime soon.

Mw2 was my first FPS shooter, and even though I was basing my opinion on the likes of spawn trapping, building up killstreaks for further killstreaks etc. I knew by the amount of complaining that it was in dire need of balancing.

I think that's exactly it. BO is far more balanced to be blunt and I really don't see how others think differently or least that MW2 is far more balanced than it. Though I have my doubts whether people are looking it from this perspective.

MW2 is a pick up and play game. Those with a decent connection and a bit of cop on(+ and use cheap perks, attachments, guns and camp for their precious killstreaks) will do well off the bat. There's nothing more to it IMO.

I can understand you have some affinity for MW2, what with it being your first FPS. As said, I'll miss some of the maps(not necessarily just the design but just the little things like lighting) and guns(Vector, 50 Cal, etc. RIP) but that's about it.

    Black Ops
The way i see it is as follows:

MW2 : Idea ****e, execution best as possible
BO : Idea good, execution ****e.

I've had BO since the day it was released and i'm quite fed up of it already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭zero19

Enjoying BO more i have to say, no bull**** kills online and i love the customization. As for single player i didn't really get hooked into it like i did with Mw2, but still not bad experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,399 ✭✭✭✭r3nu4l

I've not even played 5 hours worth of the game yet so this opinion is subject to change. :)

While BO has a lot of flaws including poorer graphics, overall I much prefer it as I feel it's more balanced than MW by far.

    As 2smiggy said:
    mw >= black ops > mw2 > waw

    Definitely!

COD4 was the business in terms of graphics, gameplay and while the maps weren't brilliant (apart from a couple of them) it was a far better game than MW2. Black Ops for me lies somewhere in between.

Give me another month or two and I might change my mind but not by much I'd say.

MW2 wasn't a bad game really, and it wouldn't have been so bad if the community wasn't useless and exploit stupid stuff.

It'll happen to BO, just have to wait and see what it is.

    Black Ops
Black Ops removed all the fun that MW2 brought to the table, i miss being able to to run around with a hand gun or shotgun and still get a few kills.

Has anybody tried this in Black Ops its impossible, it takes a full clip to kill one person which is frustrating.

Mw2 got the balance between a fun game and a competitive game perfect, where as in BlOps you get punished for not using a sub machine gun or assault rifle!

Also you know the game/maps are terrible when all anybody does is hip fire with there guns, serious, next time you play count how many deaths you take from some dude hipfiring its shocking!

I've been getting a few one shot kills with the olympia and stakeout shotguns, i've also taken a few guys down with handguns as well, but you really need extended mags with handguns i find.

Black Ops - has dedicated servers, you can get a game where the server host can't pull the plug once he starts dying or ping storm you.

feels much more balanced, especially in hardcore. A bit of teamwork goes a long way, makes it feel a bit like battlefield (good thing) rather that a casual flash game like MW2.

If you try to run about with a pistol or knife you will get milled in seconds - perfect!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,604 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

the more I play BLOPs the more I like it tbh, I was ready to hate it but it's very balanced except for the travesty that is sniping (although I have found a way that kind of works for quickscoping, seems to work a fair amount of the time). Sniper bullets should be godlike in this game after what they did to the scopes. There's no justification for making people camp-snipe if it takes 2-3 upper body bullets to kill, but Josh Olin wont see a problem that nobody snipes because he doesn't die from them any more so looks like we're stuck with it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 189 ✭✭Ryan451

Right now i prefer Black Ops, that may change but as of now i do prefer it.

I feel the MP experience is great, the guns being balanced and every game not being overrun by killstreaks. I like most of the maps, find the guns enjoyable and the perks and equipment fun also.

I haven't completed the Campaign yet so i do not think it would be fair for me to judge it now. Zombies is awesome also :)

anyone who prefers being able to kill with shotguns from sniper like range can stick with mw2. same applies to danger close, commando and one man army.

i am enjoying not being killed like this anymore. it's also better earning killstreaks rather than the usual predator/harries/ac130 or chopper gunner.

Agree with the danger close and ****, but shotguns in mw2 were about right imo. Not for MW2 (Because they were a secondary in it) but for black ops. A shotgun will kill someone from alot further out than the 10 yards you have to be in blops. In mw2 the spaz wasnt as good as any of the AR's or the UMP etc, it was just alot better than the rest of the secondaries... lets be honest, comparing a pistol to a shotgun... its pretty obvious which one is better.

Being a primary weapon in blops, i find the shotguns very underwhelming tbh

Still not sure about the maps, but the game's balance is light years ahead of MW2 when it launched so BO gets my vote.

    Black Ops
God I really have tried my best to like this game I really have.... Its just not as good as mw2.

The graphics, the sound, the lack of urgency to the movements, the maps and honestly the worst bit for me personally..... the weapons / kilstreaks.
I mean they are 40year old guns! Simply not as cool as modern day weapons imo. I wouldnt play a racing game that gave me only 40year old cars to drive. Killstreaks like the rc car are not nearly as class as seeing a precision airstrike tear across a map.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭Batmantastic

I gotta say, I much prefer Black Ops. Sure, the servers are JACKED until they patch it, but MW2 had way more problems when it came out than Black Ops does.

It's a hell of a lot more balanced than MW2 ever was aswell; perks, killstreaks, weapons etc.

I'm loving the balance and I've yet to find a map I truly despise. Unlike in MW2 where I DESPISED Derail, Wasteland, Overpass and Karachi from day one.

Overall, Treyarch have really outdone themselves with Black Ops, and I think anyone trying to compare it to MW2 is silly. Sure, it might still be Call of Duty, but it's a different company and as a result it's an entirely different game. Loving it.
