If you're not sure of her name, how do you know you googled the right person?

Actually, what I meant was, does $35,000,000 for a painting of a coke bottle represent good value or is the purchaser mad.

I never passed comment on the quality of the painting and have never pretended to be an art critic of any sort.

    But you said...

Please forgive me for my lack of appreciation of all things artistic, but does the person who paid 35 Million Dollars for a picture of a coke bottle need help.

    ... in your opening post.

Also, are you familiar with Warhol's work? If not, how can you say it is or is not worth 35 million? Or do you actually think he just sat down to paint a bottle of coke because he thought it would look nice over the fireplace?

As regards the price, perhaps it was bought as an investment?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Nice soundbite, but pretty devoid of merit if you’ve ever seen a painting from the likes of Salvador Dali.

Dali had skill AND imagination. To be a real artist you need both. Noone suggested to throw away skills, thats like throwing the baby out with the bath water. But the baby won't get clean without that water so don't forget it....:p

The days of just being able to paint realism and not expected (or accepted) to do anything else are over. Unless you're a commercial artist in it for the bucks.

A lot of the complaints so far have been directed at post modernism (Hirst for example) and particularly at performance art. People like Hirst, Jeff Koons and Tracy Emin are only really famous BECAUSE of their controversy. Hell, there's done more damage to art in the publics eyes then any artist I can think of. I'd challenge people not involved in art to name more then 5 artists LIVING. The only ones the public hear of are the "trouble makers", there seemed public disappointment last years Turner prize winner was "inoffensive".

Many contemporary artists who are held in higher esteem by many artists and critics have a lower profile publicly. How about Marina Abramović for example? Still a huge name however. Probably still not everyones cup of tea but at least a significant part of her work isn't designed to make you pissed off. And if you're really pissed off at the likes of hirst/koons you've basically done exactly what they wanted you to. ;)

I have never at any point in this thread pretended to know nor care about art. This is obvious from my first post where I admit this quite clearly. I didn't say if $35 million was worth it or not. I questioned whether or not the purchaser was mad to spend $35,000,000 on a picture of a coke bottle.

Even the auction house wasnt expecting such a sum to be paid for it.

Again, not the impression I get from the opening post, but we can agree to disagree. As I said, it may have been prely for invetmeent purposes.

For me, spednign 700,000 on a mortgage when you only earn 30 or 40k a year is more insane.

Can you say with absolute certainty that it wasn't his actual intention?

Nope. Not one of the artists I'm more familar with. I would seriously doubt that that was the market he was aiming for though.
